Her comment about Serena Williams....greatness recognizes greatness! I really loved what Steffi said about being content with what she has accomplished and that she moved on from tennis, she had no regrets. Pretty powerful statement and reminder from an athletic legend. I also agree with her comments about Kerber...this may have been 2 years ago but mentally Kerber just gets down on herself (case in point, SF at FO 2018 against Halep)...she has the potential to be so much more sighs

It's hard to compare Graf and Williams as the game is so different now. The racquet technology makes touch less imporant while making power paramount, the net in the modern game is a dangerous place for a tennis player to be because passing shots are so easy and Grafs slice backhand, as glorious a shot as Serena's serve, just simply wouldn't cut it in todays power game. To compare the two I go on H2H - 1 win for Serena, a debutaunt with ambition and 1 win for Graf, a seasoned pro. That to me is the fairest way to compare them.

The comparisons can Not be made because TIMES change. Had Steffi been playing in the 2000's in her prime, that would mean she would have been trained for THAT time and she would have been consummate and won many because we have seen how great she was otherwise, or back in the late 1980s--1990s.

The fact the women's tour has been weak, especially at the so-called echelons at the top, Caroline Wozniacki and Dinara Safina reaching number 1 without winning a Grand Slam title, early retirements by Kim Cljsters, Justine Henin and Amelie Mauresmo and a serious lack of consistency and a challenge, paved the way for the Williams Sisters, amongst others, to extend their careers, in comfortable, largely unchallenged fashion ;)

If one compares Steffi Graff's nose to Venus' in terms of size, Steffi wins the "prize" for a very large nose hands down. If one compares Serena & Steffi in terms of looks, NEITHER is a "supermodel", but EACH has characteristics that make them physically attractive. RACISM is the REAL reason individuals will say Serena is ugly, while Steffi is suppose to be so "attractive". Serena is authentic, which is part of her beauty and hasn't run to doctors, chopping herself all up to please the RACISTS. She "cleans up" PRETTY WELL. There are TONS of interviews, magazine covers and other photos to PROVE it. There is ONLY so much make-up can do, so it IS Serena's natural beauty that is accentuated & shines through. She has a FANTASTIC body that intimidates the WEAK and she is married to an attractive man who sees her beauty. That's what happens when ONE DOESN'T have RACIST IDEOLOGIES running through their DARK hearts.

way too many AO wins where she played almost solely against Australian players...something like 7 of them. Those just cannot be considered equal to the rest of her own 17 wins...let alone all the singles slams that Martina, Chris, Steffi, and Serena won. I think now that Serena has 22, the top 5 is: Serena, Martina, Steffi, Margaret, then Chris. Margaret gets the nod over Chris, because even when you "take out" the AO wins that Margaret got against a bunch of Aussies, it still gives her like 17, on top of all those doubles and mixed titles. Steffi is only no. 3 because of the couple of things she achieved that no one else probably will, which are obviously the Golden Slam and probably the total weeks at no. 1. Serena and Martina get the nod over Steffi because they both won multiple doubles and mixed to go with their 18+ singles slams, where Graf only won one. And then Serena gets the nod over Martina because winning 4 more singles slams than her looks a lot more impressive than Graf doing so, with Serena managing to win 16 slams outside of singles, winning half of those along with a singles title.

Seles was 17 when she became world number 1 and was dominating a more experienced Graf by winning 6 slam title in back to back seasons. 3 titles each season. Then she got stabbed. Steffi was all alone to win as many Slams as she could until Hingis and Williams came. Then She retired because she couldn't keep up with the competition. I still think Graf is the best ever. If you watched her when she playing in late 80's and throughout the 90's, you knew dominant she was. The forehand needs no explanation. She had some of best footwork of any tennis player in history. She had a great backhand. Although later on, she effectively used the backhand slice which she was almost always able to hit low and deep into back court. Her serve was powerful and extremely accurate. Often hitting 110 mph. She was able to put remarkable topspin on her second serve. She was unbelievable. Serena is great, but the competition just isn't there. Graf had to deal with Sanchez-Vicario, Sabatini, Seles, Navratilova, Novotna, Mandlikova, etc. It's a long list. The women now have to catch Serena on a bad day to have any shot of winning. Plus, they're way too inconsistent.
@OLAODUS-cs5sl7 жыл бұрын
J. Black, you obviously know very little about tennis.Even Graff herself said/admitted Serena has done unbelievably, whereas you said...... "but the competition just isn't there. Graf had to deal with Sanchez-Vicario, Sabatini, Seles, Navratilova, Novotna, Mandlikova"??? Serena has seen off the BEST crop EVER, during her time, over 40 players in terms of their pace and the physicality of today's game, think of Venus/Capriatti/Mouresmo/Dementieva/Davenport/Clijsters/Sharapova/Azarenka/LiNa/Safina/Hingis/Henin/Ivanovic/Muguruza/Kerber/Halep/Lisicki/KeysKvitova/Pliskova/, even the likes of Kutznetsova/Safarova/Wozniacki/Radwanska/Soarez-Navaro/Jankovic/ would have troubled Graff and her era players, no player of Graff's era can beat those playing in the top 10 today.
@johnblack80367 жыл бұрын
You're absolutely right. I don't know anything about tennis. Of course Graf is going to say Serena is the best ever. Who says I'm the greatest ever in their sport with the exception of Jordan. Sampras, McEnroe and Federer all said at one time Laver was the best ever. Do you think actually believed that? I saw Graf play from when she was 17. If you put her in today's game with improved training, equipment and everything else, she would give Serena major problems. Look at the power Graf's forehand, keeping in mind that it's 25 years ago; and just imagine what it would like today. She was also the best mover on the court I've ever seen. Plus Graf played far more often and didn't have losses that made you shake your head. I'll give you that Serena has been dominant the past several year. Not this year; but before that, she was wildly inconsistent. Anyway, that's my opinion.

No need to put down Serena just because you're a Steffi fan. The argument goes both ways. Serena in her prime was one of the greatest female athletes of all time. She was lightning fast and strong. Additionally, her serve was a thing of beauty and her technique is so simple yet effective and that's why her game hasn't been broken down in 21 years. Serena was also a mental giant and a lioness on court when she was younger. Both Serena and Steffi are goats.

Do you AGREE to this? To all fans and crazy fanatics of the players: Whole world knows Steffi or Seles are great legends of the sport. But the fanatics of these two posted ton of disgraceful and hurtful comments. Most of them lies and poisonous. When Steffi and Seles were playing, tennis was so interesting and class. They never cheated, win or loss. But some commentators seriously tried to show them not great as their favorite. If they like Serena, no problem. But never spread hate comments. We can blame fanatics and dirty psychotics like Parche, but don't blame players. I love Steffi not just because she won 22 or many slams, it's because of her personality, spirit and character. I respect your choices. But don't post lies or disgraceful comments about any player. Who really knows what would have happened if stabbing wasn't done? Seles or Steffi may won some high, some less or equal. If they meet in every slam in 1993, they might have shared 2-2 just as they shared 1-1 win-loss record in the previous year 1992. But it's also opinion. Others may say Steffi can have majority, some others may say Seles can have majority. It depends on various factors and choices. Numbers only matter for you? We need not them to say one's great or not. Surely Steffi and Seles great legends. Steffi, Seles, or Serena are true legends for the sport. Not only the 3, but also Martina, Evert, Henin, Hingis are. Cannot we live our lives happily and peacefully respecting one another? We can. Hope you agree to my appeal. Agree?

Steffi would have likely beaten Monica in most matches, and I think they would have made each other better for playing each other, so I believe they would have won more slams than now recorded. Steffi about 28 or so, Monica about 17 or so. Monicas double-handing everything would have undone her soon enough, as all the good players would have taken advantage of that Weakness--yes, weakness, since her/that type of playing stresses the torso and shoulders more than most care to admit. Seles won the Ausie Open in 1996, made some finals, and won some touring titles, too, making it CLEAR she was her "old" self again, just not as good due to her inability to single-hand volleys, as time went by. Serena would not have won all the slams she now has under her belt had she not cheated (I call it cheating) with screaming and howling--no thanks to their (Venus, too) father's instructions. Steffi had a slight percentage win over Seles before the incident. Overall, Steffi kept the winning on top, Nine wins over Seles' five. ALSO, liars and evildoers ignore that had it not been for Steffi's dad's blackmail scandal, and her illnesses, which both harmed her game, she would have probably have won easily a few more slams and touring titles. And you are a liar about Steffi not saying "a single word" about the half-inch knife cut: the intent of the attacker was tragic, but the actual damage was minute.

With all respect, I do not think it is coming from the heart of Steffi. I never heard Steffi say anything that was even remotely close to wishing that someone else especially a humble black lady should surpass her as the GOAT. She is coming out now because she sees her record dominance slipping away. Whenever Steffi was heard talking about Tennis it was usually about German Tennis players. For a Lady who lives in America and married to a US American, this is too late coming for her to suddenly wish Serena well. I am saying this as someone who spent over 10 years in Germany and who fully understands the German mentality. When Serena tied her record in Wimbledon, Steffi should have tweeted her support and admiration. That was the least she could have done but she didn`t. I understood she posted a clumsy message on her FB page like folks wake up every morning to go read a Steffi Graf post. I am not impressed.
