I never saw Steffi so nervous and frustrated that she smashed the racquet. I can only guess she knew she lost to a player without a basic stroke, the forehand.

Pam had defeated Chris Evert (for the second straight time) in the quarterfinals, so she was surely confident going into this match. Her attacking game was definitely no frills but, on this fast indoor carpet, she was tactically nearly flawless. Pam gets maligned a lot as a singles player, but she had career wins over all the major champions of her era and got to #3 in the rankings at one point.

Yes, Steffi was not at her best here. But let's give credit where it's due. Pam played some inspired tennis here and she showed that one of the best ways to play Steffi was to catch her off guard at the net. She had a game plan and executed it well (funny forehand and all).

I can see why with her unorthodox game but serve and volley prowess that Pam had multiple wins over Steffi, Sabatini, Navratilova and Evert. Phenomenal doubles player and records with Martina some of which will never be broken (109 match streak between '83-'85)

After the Golden Slam and the "Super Slam" within one year since the Championships 1987 she was overpowered. And she was still 18 years old... ! ❤

Pam Shriver was an amazing doubles player...serve and volley players always gave Steffi the most difficult time.

But Shriver couldn't win the title....I remember thinking that she was a match away from winning the biggest singles title of her career but Sabatini just overpowered her in the final. She also reached a GS singles final in 1978 but lost to Evert.
