That's the way I always understood it, don't even have to swear just be disrespectful to get code violations: 1st time is a warning, 2nd time is a point penalty, 3rd time is a game penalty and 4th time is a match penalty. For instance it was only a couple of years ago with Serena Williams getting a warning because her coach was illegally gesturing to her during a rally which she denied, then smashed her racket on the court for a point penalty (and an automatic fine) and argued it should have only been a warning because the umpire was wrong earlier and he should have retracted it (can't retract penalty calls) She called him a thief and got a 3rd penalty and may have gotten a fine for that too (not sure). I could really show my age and bring up how John McEnroe used to get penalties often for mouthing off at the umpire and didn't always swear at them either: "YOU CALL THAT IN?" Because there's an escalating penalty scale in tennis for repeated infractions. First you get a warning, which Kenin got. Then you lose a point, then a game, then the match. In the US Open match with Osaka, Serena was given a warning, then lost a point for the next infraction, then a game for the next. The ump in the Serena match was full of it, though. It was absurd to penalize her for calling him a thief after he took a point from her. "Thief" is an extremely tame criticism - not even close to an obscenity, and it was certainly an understandable response to the point penalty which she felt was unjustified. I didn't like Serena's behavior that day, but the ump's reaction to being called a thief will go down as one of the lamest penalties ever given in tennis.

Gross incompetence displayed by the umpire AND the supervisor for taking the egregious, overt, disrespect. This match should have ended right then and there.
@LucianDevine5 күн бұрын
Actually, the umpire did what she was supposed to. The player said that it was too slick and unsafe. the chair umpire went and checked, deemed it safe, and made the ruling. The player has the right to appeal the decision to the supervisor, which she did. When the supervisor made the same ruling and told her she'd be defaulted if she didn't play, she played. Everything was by the book. The player had every right to be upset, especially when they had to suspend the match 2 points later. It's her career on the line, not the umpires.

I think Sofia, for her long term success, should explore a change of coaches. I saw her play live in San Diego last year and she is clearly very talented, but there seems to be a continued underlying aggravation which, in the short term, can be a great motivator, but can really be a grind. She is mature enough to go to the next level of continued success, injuries notwithstanding. I thought the supervisor’s demeanor was very unprofessional. Thank you for the video!

Swearing at an umpire is unprofessional, she is a brat, her father should teach her manners besides tennis. Also, to those people saying should be the players to decide if is to dangerous, if this was the case, the player will want to stop the game "because is dangerous" just because she is tired or loosing the game , and if the court will be really dangerous but she is winning then they will want to continue anyway. Players will use this rule to their advantage. The umpire is not a random person from the street and knows about court conditions, players are not better than umpire to decide. the wta is full of brats with no class, is sad to see

in the end , it's the players call weather they think it's not right to play , since they are the ones who could sustain injuries that could render them out of the sport for good , so you lose a match if you keep your health. play was stopped a few minutes later so who was right?. i particularly like how the chair umpire got out her chair and walked over to where the player would be standing on the serve line and moved one foot around for a sec. then declared it was o.k. , you can't get a "feel" from the court like that , looks like it was all about her ego, not the players.

OK, so I don't watch much tennis, but I will say this, if the people in the crowd are holding umbrellas because there is rain coming down, and a player on the court says it's too slippery to play, I'm gonna have to take that players word for it. And then the match went and got postponed due to rain minutes later. Everybody talking about how she doesn't have any class in this and that, but none of your careers are being put on the line by a judge that clearly ignorant and shouldn't be judging tennis matches. Don't get me started on the superintendent that comes out and says the court is playable, 10 minutes before he postpones the match due to unplayable conditions. Think about it this way, who's footing the bill when someone slips and breaks their leg, after telling them it was too slippery to play? Because I'll tell you what, if she would have broken her leg or ankle, she would've had good grounds to sue.
