Jiang Cheng in the series is a way better (nicer, understandable and more amiable) character than in the books. His hate in the books is mainly based on his inferior complex towards an oblivious WuXian. He doesn't really apologize or change to the better unlike in the series where his character shifts forth and back with the happenings. I liked him way more in the drama series.

I don't think so. In the novel, Jiang Cheng cared for Wei Wuxian. When WWX disappeared, JC, despite being busy with sunshot campaign, he still tried to search for WWX. When he found him, he never cared what methods WWX used even if it was evil or demonic path, JC welcomed WWX with open arms. JC was even put in a difficult situation where as one of the sect leaders, naturally they are against demonic cultivators, but WWX is his brother and best friend. He tried his best to protect WWX and their sector in his own ways. When WWX died, everyone knew how JC hated demonic cultivators even more. Probably bcoz it's the main reason why her sister and WWX died, but when WWX got resurrected and JC found him, he never tried killing WWX. JC lets WWX sit there and talk with him, waiting for WWX to explain. The reason why JC was captured by the Wen Sect back then was bcoz he tried to protect WWX, but JC never mentioned it to WWX and that is a genuine love, he doesn't want anything in return. They both love each other as siblings. I feel sorry for JC. He lost both of his parents and sister, and WWX promised him that they will stick to each other like the Jade twins, but in the end even WWX left him. Without Jin Ling, there'll be no one by his side.

3 months later, but something I like in the novel better than the drama is that it’s likely that JC didn’t even try to kill WWX (leading a siege is not quite killing lol). The backlash of breaking the seal is what likely killed him. I sometimes wonder what was going through JCs head when he heard or if he saw his brother get mauled to death by fricking corpses. Man, I need to read some fluff, I made myself sad. That all being said I enjoy the different versions of JC.

He really was resentful to Wei Wuxian because Fengmian always went so easy on him, while he was hard on Cheng (because he was going to one day lead the clan). I understand the way he feels (except with how mean he is to Jin Ling) and his cruelty to Wei. He's hurting, and people in pain lash out. I don't even know if he was truly homophobic, or if he was just resentful that Wei fell in love and was able to be happy even after his first death. Like, Cheng worked so hard for everything, but love and respect and renown came so easily for Wei (at least in Cheng's view).
