The powder is "delousing" powder. It kills lice.

That's not correct. The white powder is cocaine. All prisoners were given cocaine up until 1956.

I like watching reactions as a new means of rewatching my favorite movies. I find someone watching Gladiator for the first time, then I check to see if they’ve watched Shawshank so, perfect timing….also, your Gladiator reaction reminded me of my emotional first time viewing, before I hit puberty and the testosterone excised my soul of all it’s stupid feelings haha….for real tho

I kinda thought I had seen this on your channel before, so I combed through my watch history to no avail and when I thought I had lost my mind, your disclaimer proved I'm not AS crazy as I originally presumed!

13:35 "I'm tellin' you, these walls are funny. First you hate 'em. Then you get _used_ to 'em. Enough time passes, you get so you _depend_ on 'em." The very ending of this movie is happy, but _so many sad things_ happen to _get_ you there, and I would say that, probably, the saddest part is what happens to _Brooks._ He was born in the 19th. century. He actually managed to get a college _degree_ before being locked up in 1905 at the age of 22. He was taken from a relatively _rustic_ world with no electric lighting, no radios, no TVs, and as he explained in his brief narrative, he had seen only _one_ single car which must've seemed like the most novel thing in the _world,_ at the time. Because of this last part, the municipalities that covered the US were what's known as "walker's towns," that someone with a good sense of direction could walk all the way across inside of an _hour_ or two. While he was locked up, both world wars and the Great Depression happened. The first radio and TV broadcasts happened. 50 model-year _upgrades_ came along, and now, the developed world is dominated by _metropolises_ that one cannot drive all the way across inside of an hour or two without reliance on something _motorized._ Now he might be able to adapt to all these changes if he still had his youth, but he's in his _70s,_ now. He's _well_ into his retirement years. So it seems to me, the _most_ humane thing that could be done for this man is to set him up with a comfortable pension and move him into a _retirement_ home.

6:20 "The name's Red." "Red. Why do they call you that?" "Maybe it's because I'm Irish." Now as I understand it, in the _book,_ this character was indisputably Irish; _glaringly_ Irish. A shock of red hair, ghost-white pale such that he doesn't _dare_ get too much sun, _Irish._ Now of course, Morgan Freeman is _not_ Irish. Neither of his _parents_ are Irish. It would not surprise me if, at some point, I were to learn that he has not had a single Irish ancestor in the last 8000 _generations._ But he's also a master of credibility. When he says, "I'm Irish," absolutely _no_ part of you feels compelled to dispute it.

No, no - they're not welcoming the newest inmates. They're intimidating them. (and, psssst......it's "ado" - "without further ado")

Boggs messed with Andy, the man who helped the senior guard protect his money. Moral of the story? Never mess with people who help others with money.

If you like Tim Robbins you might want to check out War of the Worlds. It's really intense and he has a memorable role in that.

I was put in an institution 3 weeks after my 15th birthday. Drug abuse and an a-hole step father. I got out when I was 18. Getting "institutionalized" is a real thing. The inside world is familiar and all you know no matter how bad it is. The outside world is frightening, unknown, unforgiving.

I heard "I" not "I'm". Her unfinished sentence: "I started crying (before he hung), cause that's what I was thinking was going to happen." (But then for a second they made it seem like it wasn't.)
