Warmest and best boot I have ever owned! Just ordered another pair. First pair are about 15 years old.

Steger Mukluks founder and CEO Patti Steger was briefly married to Arctic/Antarctic dogsled celebrity and environmentalist Will Steger. Apparently, they stayed friends and she kept the Steger name and ol' Will uses her booties on all his expeditions. People who know their stuff say these stomp all over their cold-weather competition, Sorels, bunny boots...etc. Much lighter, no sweat retention, no circulation impedance and so on.

I've had my Ojibwa Shorts for SEVEN years now and they're still in impeccable condition. I've never seen ANYONE wearing them and it's crazy what a secret they seem to be! My boots seem to hold up just fine in light to moderate rain. I think it's pronounced "Stee-ger," though, no?

When your pager went off I instinctively reached for mine. Got a laugh out of it. Thanks for the vids, and thanks for volunteeing!

I found Danish military over boots size large for $5.00 that fit over my mukluks and they weigh one pound a boot. In wet cold I can slip these over my mukluks. Thanks for the tip!

You would need the rubber galoshes for when the temperature pokes above freezing and the snow gets wet and slushy.

Yup, that is exactly what I used when the temps got warm, I believe the brand was Tingley.

I'd love to be able to experiment with woven grass liners (Siberian tribes, Saami) or rabbit fur or reindeer calf liners (Greenlanders). There are a zillion variations on this basic theme across the North. Moosehide, reindeer legskin, ringed sealskin, bearded sealskin...depends on the neighborhood.

The Tingleys must be durable since that all that construction guys wear over their steel-toed workboots in wet conditions. I've never seen an all-black pair. On worksites everybody is wearing the galoshes with the bright-yellow uppers. Don't forget the Neos galoshes either. I own a pair. That's all you see the mailmen wearing in snowy conditions.

It’s pronounced steeeger! Will Steger was an internationally known arctic explorer. You will also appreciate high heavy alpaca socks! They keep you dry & warm!

I absolutely love the couple of pairs I've had - except for the soles. No matter how careful you are the soles get gummy - super sticky - after a few years. The tops never wear out but Steger has absolutely no interest in helping you resole. You're on your own, unfortunately. My cobbler tried several options and none lasted. You basically have to remove the whole sole and replace with an alternative.

Do they get tight around the legs?

Never had an issue with it, probably depends on the size of your calves.

Could be, but you have to forgive my Midwestern accent. Now I am off to Maine to give these babies a real field test ;)

I haven't found anything written about the calf size of the tall mukluks. I have large calves (16.5") and am concerned if they'll fit.

I have about 17 inch calves and did not have an issue

I bought the camucks for hunting and fishing and must they are comfortable but have the worst traction I have ever seen. If you are walking on ice or even a slippery road you are going to have problems

+Michael V. Gripping comes with crampons. . . lots of variety there. . . from the ice wall climbing type to walking in Holland type. . .

Thanks for sharing this. I'm considering a pair from them but they strike me as too warm for the Wisconsin hunting season.

+Scott N As long as it is below freezing, especially if you sit in a stand, they are hard to beat. If it is above freezing, they can suffer since the ones that I have are not waterproof. In that case I put the liner in a Tingley rubber boot cover.

$179.00 RIP OFF IMO . You can buy that boot liner & insole for $30 , then a cheap pair of cold front snow boots for $45 . Then you have basically the same thing for about $75 . How do I know this ? Because I did it .

Nice review. I've done the spring edible and medicinal plants class, 2 survival courses and the escape and evasion class with Midwest Native Skills. Great courses and Tom is an outstanding instructor. I plan on taking the Maine trip one of these years.
