Steinberger $6 ebay single ball conversion+ review+ Demo

I couldn't find any reviews of the cheap eBay single ball conversions. The only reviews/installations I found were of the jcustom $80 alternative. So I bought a cheap eBay locking nut myself and installed it. This video documents the process of converting my gt-pro Steinberger to use single ball end strings. I share my opinions and a quick demo of how the guitar plays.

I have the JCustom head. Although it looks pretty high quality, no matter how careful I am tightening the screws, the E and B strings get broken all the time. I am using a 0.09 set. I suspect the cheaper option shown in this video has a better chance not breaking the strings because of the double locking system.

Thanks for this. I bought the Steinberger (quite expensive five times the price) and thought it was terrible, very difficult to fit first time, also Allen screws supplied would not gripp the high B and E strings on a set of 9 - 42s. Have taken your recommendation and am happy with the new adaptor.

Labella makes 11-50 strings in both calibrated (for Transtrem) & uncalibrated varieties. Headless USA sells them and they are usually in stock.

my top E string slips off the very top fret due to the head-piece not truly aligned. other than this,its a great little guitar.

I just got the one in this video. Horrible metal quality, size is off a bit, and screw holes did not match my guitar screw holes. Looking for some original or higher quality one, and ca't find any.

Yes a guitar I can play when I waiting for someone to shop or when I fish , I set my lines and set in my car . The regular guitar head stocks hits the window sounds crazy but I drive with a ukulele under my seat I practice constantly.

I bought the same model of adaptor and it didnt fit didnt have the same angle, 90degrees on tghe adaptor vs slanted in the guitar end of the neck plus the screws missaligned... im kind of agains redrilling the holes so im still to find a slution taht doesnt cost as much as the guitar hahaha .. im from Brazil btw so they r really expensive to get here

The screws supplied with these aren't that great. You can replace the individual string grub screws with 'dog point' screws - they have a short post extending from the end with a flat top - they grip the strings really well. The three bolts that attach the three wedge string clamps to the top can be replaced with flatter button head screws which will then accept the same hex key size as the grub screws. On the versions of this string clamp I have seen the upper bolts take a larger key.

Interesting, been curious about those cheap headpieces as well..thanks for verifying that they do fit! Nice to know they too have individual locking screws, never was convinced that the 3 big locking nuts could clamp the strings securely enough. I know it's only been months since you posted this, but how is it holding up so far? Cheers

No complaints about it at all. I've taken this thing to open mics every other week, on two trips cross country and 3 complete string changes. It's held up fine. If you don't want to wait 3-4 weeks to get it from China for $5-6 amazon sells the same thing next day for about $8.

You can get them on eBay. I haven’t used eBay in a decade-and-a-half. Can you find them on Craig’s List also? Never disrespect a finger picker. Mark Knopfler plays that way (one of the reasons I do too), and he endorsed Steinberger during the 80s.

How did that affect the neck and intonation? Sounds great!

The truss rod needed to be tightened a bit to compensate for the extra tension. The intonation also needed to be re-set. To achieve correct intonation the low E needs to be set far enough back in the bridge that changing that string is a little bit of a hassle. This occurs because the part of the tuner that holds the ball end of the low-E when fully unwound wants to occupy the spot that the saddle sits in. Essentially you need to move the saddle forward and re-intonate just the low-E every time you change strings. But, I'm happy to do that twice a year, the strings are coated so they don't need to be changed often. If that sounds like too much work-stick to 10 gauge strings.

Dov Zazkis. Thanks! I just ordered the guitar at 17% off. Being a jazz and acoustic player, going from 12's to 10's seems a bit much. 11's ok. Pat Metheny uses 11's but please, not 10's! I found an inexpensive hatdshell shotgun case from walmart which is well padded and protected for $10 which works wuite well. I is a little longer than need be but i put a small practice amp , cable, and strap in there too and works out great.

It only takes single ball end strings once the adapter is installed. If you want it to work with both types of strings you need one of the j-custom units. They are about $80. Headless USA sells them.

boght a spirit , after watching this . iece one bent . piece two mis alligned . after three i have determined i am unable to find one that will mount on my spirit . so i went for "alice brand" double ball end strings and they were 2cm short . what a long bogus road . diadario 09 double bal ends is wher ei am at now . not cheap /

No, that wont work. Even if you could get the head-piece to fit, you'd need to figure out how to install tuners at the bridge end. What you want is a 1980's Cort space-strat: reverb.com/ca/item/3777087-cort-headless-n-a-white FYI the one in the photo above is mine.
