I’ve been following your channel for years. I’ve learned a lot especially about so many manufacturers I never knew existed. Always a pleasure viewing your videos. I own a 1966 Baldwin Model R in excellent condition.

Hi, Robert Nice video as always I have a Pleyel upright piano from 1929 which also have flying dampers on the bass strings, like Bechstein. It's an excellent piano, in my opinion up to bechstein and blütner uprights.

Hello Marcus and everyone. I have got a Lipp upright from a club and the casework is proving very difficult to clean, get the nicotine off. Do you recommend any stuff I could use to clean it ?

Would you attempt to pitch raise this piano in one pass or would you raise by a 1/4 tone and do two passes to get up to 440 to give the strings a chance? Id love to see a video of the pitch raise! Thanks Peter
@DavidBoycePiano4 жыл бұрын
Pitch raise in one pass. The potential problem is mostly with chemical bonds between string and pressure bar, agraffe or top hitch pin. Hence the letting down a little first. Once that hurdle is safely overcome, it doesn't make much difference, in my opinion, to do one large raise as opposed to two smaller ones.

Oooh, rare to see a vintage Steingraeber! I've never seen one in the flesh. Looks magnificent. I look forward to a video after pitch raise, hammer filing and regulation, please please! I have once come across a piano with the additional bass overdampers instead of fly dampers. On a German upright of similar age. There are three pics three-quarters of the way down this page of my website: www.davidboyce.co.uk/birdcage-pianos.php (the piano in question really doesn't belong among the birdcage pianos on that page!)

Thank you David for your encouragement! We've now pitch raised the piano with no broken strings, which is encouraging. Slack also taken up; next job refacing as it's rather too mellow! Marcus

@@RobertsPianos I've just found a rebuild of a 1905 Rordorf upright with similar overdamper section here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gICrc4GXebuneqc It's useful for learning the French technical piano vocabulary.

@@DavidBoycePiano Hello David, many thanks for sharing that video. It just so happens that my oldest son Richard, is moving to Marseille and will be tuning and servicing pianos there, so very timely. I've shared the video with him. Marcus

What do you use to lubricate the strings at the pressure bar and bass top 'bridge' pins before raising the pitch?
@DavidBoycePiano4 жыл бұрын
I use Protek Prolube. It is a liquid lubricant whose solvent evaporates leaving a dry fluoropolymer film. But I know that Richard Roberts (one of Marcus's sons) prefers something a good bit thicker.
@DAVE1210634 жыл бұрын
@@DavidBoycePiano Thank you for your reply. Is Protek Prolube simply PTFE/Teflon suspended in a solvent?
@DavidBoycePiano4 жыл бұрын
@@DAVE121063 You may well ask! All I can tell you is that it says it's fluoropolymer lubricant. I suspect it will be some existing industrial lubricant re-packaged for pianos. But exactly what. I don't know. Even the Safety Data Sheets don't give much away. The slightly lighter variant, Protek CLP, is also usable for this purpose, and piano technicians find it excellent for sluggish and/or squeaky flanges.

Steingraeber - A wonderful maker: I have played their recent grands new, and a selection of older uprights ... - This one is a splendid original: with a beautiful semi-art case and Art Nouveau central motif + original sconces - Separate deep bass and bass bridges - with 9 notes copper wound in the transition. Wow! - Interesting bass over dampers too: In piano design terms - what needed thinking about is executed. [Meanwhile nothing wasted on smooth polishing a gilt frame unseen inside an upright - it's left textured.] Even today's Steingraebers have some of the most innovative design features...: Upright ferro magnetic action www.steingraeber.de/en/innovationen/sfm-upright-piano-action/ - Where magnets return the jack without springs plus carbon fibre action / sound boards in their Phoenix (UK design) range + Agraffe technology - 85 notes: Well I've been playing since age 6 (now 10x that!) never seen a piece written for the top 3 notes - Occasionally play them when extemporising... but not often. It matters not.

@@RobertsPianos Great news: it would be good to hear the 'After' video: - About 3 years ago I took on a Bechstein Concert 7 - All original - But mellow / blissed out like nothing I've ever played - it had potential; after re-centering / refacing hammers it's now great. - Similarly that was very flat ...
