In this extraordinary interview, we explore pianist Håkon Austbø's personal story and his artistry. The theme for this part of the interview is his autobiography "Against the Flow" and Austbø's views on how to define quality in music, as well as advice for young pianists in the beginning of their career.
Håkon Austbø (born 22 October 1948) is a Norwegian classical pianist. He has made many recordings for the Brilliant Classics, SIMAX, and Naxos Records labels, and has also been a professor at the Amsterdam Conservatory. Austbø was born in Kongsberg and studied in Paris, New York, and Munich before settling in the Netherlands in 1975. Austbø's recordings include works by Olivier Messiaen (complete works for piano), Claude Debussy (complete works for piano), Alexander Scriabin (complete piano sonatas), Erik Satie, Johannes Brahms, Robert Schumann, Leoš Janáček (complete works for piano) and Edvard Grieg (complete Lyric Pieces). Austbø was also the initiator and leader of the LUCE project, which was founded to realize Scriabin's Clavier à lumières.
