The magnificent Australian soprano, Stella Axarlis, was born in Egypt of Greek parents and migrated to Australia in 1950. She won the Metropolitan Opera Auditions in 1967 and headed for Europe stepping straight into some of the most demanding dramatic soprano roles in opera in many of Europe’s Houses. She debuted with Opera Australia as Tosca and returned to perform Katya Kabanova and Magda Sorel. She is heard here in the title role of Giuseppe Verdi's AIDA with Franco Bordoni as Amonasro and Tito del Bianco as Radamès. The few notes of Amneris are sung by Jocelyne Reiter. We hear Act III with the Symphonie Orchester Graunke under conductor Walter Weller in this performance from Salzburg, October 28th 1973.
