I don’t really care about the cleavage “censorship,” but that blood-covered effect is so damn cool that it saddens me it was supposedly removed. It really adds an extra layer of immersion and cool factor for me in games where after fighting creatures that bleed a lot, blood ends up covering your character, like in Bloodborne for example. Since this effect supposedly only happened for one boss and one specific outfit, I guess the playable character being heavily covered in blood wasn’t a core part of the devs’ artistic vision for this game, which is a shame because I bet a lot of people including myself would have loved to have this effect in the game.

I don’t see why the blood would be censored either. Look at Sony published games like Bloodborne or Helldivers where your character is drenched in blood after combat. And the blood coverage thing is iffy since it’s only in the skinsuit run anyway, not any other outfit, and Ruri’s footage doesn’t show a ton of differences pre and post. And Ruri’s right, there are outfits as revealing as the ‘pre nerf’ outfits still in the game. It’s just hard to really tell if this is legitimate censorship or not. And we’ll probably never know.

Why is 'Censorship' in quotes? It is cencoring still. Cencorings definition is: the action of preventing part or the whole of a book, film, work of art, document, or other kind of communication from being seen or made available to the public, because it is considered to be offensive or harmful, or because it contains information that someone wishes to keep secret, often for political reasons. How does that not include censoring an outfit to be less revealing?

If Abby had had Eve’s physique never in a million years would that rather explicit scene been included in the game. It’s not about nudity, kink or any of that stuff. It’s about WHO is depicted, the ideology carried by the game and the designs of its characters.

And as far as the blood thing, Sony published titles like Helldivers and Bloodborne see your character also drenched in blood when you’re done with a mob. Why would they remove some but not all. As the vid says, we’ll probably never really know what the deal is.

Mortal kombat kept the gore (western), Baldur's gate 3 kept the sexual content (as well as the bear scene, also western). We had Abby get banged, but I couldn’t purchase a cosmetic pack for a game because of the female and male characters having a skin of them wrapped in bath towels. I can get full frontal with Cyberpunk but a high cut bunny outfit is a no! I don’t even want the Bunny girl outfit but it’s the principle.

I'd suggest beating the demo boss in the skin suit on performance settings and seeing what that looks like. My understanding is the gore textures only show up in balanced and performance mode, but I could be wrong. Appreciate the measured take though.

It's the bait and switch which I find doesn't sit well with me. The big marketing push was uncensored in every country. They spent a few quid there. It was everywhere that week leading into the release of the game. Them advertisements should have been pulled as I find it hard to believe they didn't know. Regarding the inconsistency between censoring some outfits while not doing the same with others, that's not uncommon in these situations in my experience. I play Azur Lane, which regularly has to deal with censorship on the Chinese side. It can be incredibly arbitrary what gets censored and what doesn't.

I strongly believe there is a 'ratio' of skin that can be shown based on regulations for a given rating. They probably would have had to go beyond the M rating to AO (18+). This ratio changes based on what part of the body is shown as well. This holds true for this game and Diablo 4's cosmetics. E.g. if you show the skin of the groin area you can't also show all of the cleavage etc. The bikini outfit shows the cleavage but the groin area is covered. I believe they censored the bunny suit and just covered it all to not have to go back a third time for possibly more revisions. The 'naked' suit shows skin but it isn't really. It's actually a full on body suit with semi-transparent material.

To me, it’s not about sexualization. I don’t even like a number of the outfits that are more risqué, so I don’t wear them. My irritation at this is about changing the original design. I’ll never pick the bunny outfit when the magician one exists; but the fact they added the unitard underneath it is stupid. Also, yes, they were censored. As someone else pointed out, they changed the outfits, but not the icons for them that show what they’re supposed to look like.

Right now this whole censorship debacle feels like outrage farming 'cause both sides are blowing it out of proportion. Plus as usual all of this is discussed from a western perspective whereas the important thing is to look at it from the eastern perspective where censorship is much more severe. BG3 for example was extremely censored in Japan, like no genitalia and minimum blood, so this whole comparison angle falls flat. From that standpoint Stellar Blade was barely censored at all.

Each region has its own M rating criteria which devs must submit for. My take is some region content reviewers were probably late to give a rating verdict and the devs adjusted it for all regions on day 1 since they probably don't want additional work to adjust the outfit on a per region basis which would take longer and since its a minor adjustment its fine.

Did you even watch the video? I’m with Ruri on this one. It’s pretty inconsistent at best and I honestly don’t think we can say definitively that this was censored and probably will never know for sure. The fact that there are outfits as revealing and some more revealing than the ‘pre nerf’ outfits, it makes no sense why they’d censor a couple but not all of them. Especially when other outfits even show the same ‘bits’ that the allegedly nerfed ones changed.

Allegedly this was about getting a CERO-D(17+) rating as opposed to a CERO-Z(18+) in Japan. EA Japan were reportedly a bit pissed off at what they saw as Dead Space being sabotaged by getting a Z rating while Stellar Blade got a D, but they were basing this judgement on the demo. As you say though, we'll never know for sure.

@@pixeljauntvr7774 While the difference between a 17 and 18 rating seems trivial, it's actually a huge deal. A Cero-D rating means that people under 17 can legally play it with parental consent. A Cero-Z rating is 18+ only. No exceptions.

It is censorship Ruri, inconsistency doesn't negate that fact. The devs themselves said "uncensored in all regions" and then released the game censored in all regions. People have the right to be pissed at being lied to. It was a rug pull. People also have the right to be pissed about censorship, sure it was only one or two outfits affected now but what's to stop them patching the rest down the road?. I think this really might be a creative decision. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Smash Brothers Ultimate both are games published by Nintendo. Both of them have T rating. When some Xenoblade characters shown up at smash bros their costumes were censored. So it is not always publishers forcing.

I have a hard time caring about these arguments anymore. It started before anyone played the game. And before this was the attack the game received from crap journos about how she has an unrealistic body and she is designed to appeal to male gaze and how her whole existence is wrong. Just get a physical copy incase a future version is updated with the patch. Genuinely don't know if it would happen or when but it's an option. I bought a copy from a online seller just in case and apart from the disc being loose and shaking around but I think the version on disc is what was intended and I'm not bothered about new game plus.

Considering this is from the company that made Nikke, which is a Korean company, it makes very little sense to me that they'd make changes to tweak gore and make outfits more modest. It definitely feels like Sony (a Japanese company from a more modest culture) exerting influence because they decided some things were borderline too much. I personally don't really care that this happened. But considering how shameless these devs are, it makes more sense to me that this particular outfit and the demo gore caught the attention of the wrong person at Sony, and was specifically targeted. That said, I'll still try it if it ever finds it's way to PC.

IDK, it doesn't make a lot of Sense in both directions and for different reasons. Why were these outfits changed so late? I mean the game had gone gold and they made it all the way to the preupdated disc version to store shelves so to speak. And you would think that the outfits would be a priority and be done earlier in development as they are a decent chunk of part of the draw to the game next to the combat. So like what they finished the game "Shipped it" so to speak then went, "Hmm, idk about these like 3 or 4 outfits we gotta change them asap". Not sure how much sense that makes, but the status of the other outfits being as they are does add a layer of confusion. The Part that makes some more sense would be randomly Sony looked at the outfits and someone up there may have put up a stink about a couple of things or smt and it was changed idk its all very odd. The thing that made this whole thing contentious was there statement of "Uncensored in all regions" which ends up looking like a lie when things that could be considered censorship did change after said statement. If they wanted to avoid this heat they prolly should have not made that statement. Also minor point on even if the changes were not Sony and just some Shift up artist that was kinda picky changing their mind. Regardless all the changes did involve hiding more of EVE aka censoring more of her, so even if this was the case that it was just an "Art change/Intended version" it did technically censor the game from what was 1.0 (Launch version) which makes the statement they made technically false, and people are easy to anger if they feel lied to. Its just kinda the way things work/are.

Think about this... if the main protagonist was a male character covered in blood and wearing full coverage clothing at all times everyone would be like omg that's fucking awesome no problems there at all!! But because the main protagonist is a very attractive female character covered in blood and sometimes (by player option to wear the more revealing suits) wearing very revealing clothing now all of a sudden people seem to have a problem? The guy has been bathing in blood while shirtless for several games and all of a sudden because a game studio decided to make something new and enjoyable and have a hot female main character now this censorship stuff is happening? It's completely pointless in my opinion lol if you wanna wear the revealing suits then wear them and if not then don't. They give you that option in the game. The game itself is freaking awesome from combat to sound to atmosphere to customization to just pure enjoyable gameplay. It's a fantastic game. I'm not sure what studio made this game but my hat's off to them and their team for taking a chance and making the game that they wanted to make. When you're that big, you have to be very careful what side you take. The correct side can be the deadly side. But where were these people back in the days when Blood Rayne was a thing, and trust me, her char is very revealing. Or when Lara Croft was overcreated to be this femme fatale. All the marketing for the game and right before it released shift up literally said it would not be censored and the reality is it was no doubt Censored shift up acknowledged it . AFAIK, I heard that the same thing happened in Nikke, the gacha by the same studio, and eventually reverted the changes. If no one complains, Sony would probably insist that Shift UP censor the rest. Doing too much invites bigger backlash, certainly people would notice. A "design decision" change this late into the game development cycle (after release) just doesn't make sense, at least to me. Someone at Shift Up, whoever the "art director" is, APPROVED that outfit model SPECIFICALLY. If the "art director" is dissatisfied with how it looked, the art team would go back to the drawing board and then edit it. And AFAIK, art stuff is usually done before the beta, maybe even before the alpha, to then implemented into the game fully in beta. About the "inconsistencies", this a full blown tinfoil hat conspiracy, but I think that's just someone at Shift Up finding loop holes in Sony's requests at censorship. "Here, see, we did as you ask. We covered more skin with this outfit. See?"

The censorship on the outfits really isn't that invasive, but it's the principle of the matter. Its a literal M rated game meant for adults, where they snuck in a day 1 censor patch for literally no other reason than what I can only assume are bs political or moral qualms with nudity that appeals to the average gamer. They said it would have NO censorship. Its technically a bait and switch. Not to mention how condescending it is for a company to basically finger wag at you for consuming "inappropriate content".
