Stellies alumni asked to respond to abuse allegations

Social justice activist Busisiwe Seabe says it's important to get
Stellenbosch University's Wilgenhof Residence alumni to come out and
speak about their experience at the residence.
This after News 24 reported on incidents of abuse at the residences.

I was at Wilgenhof. Many years ago. The "boot-camp style programme" is news to me. The document is dated 2023, indicating a new addition. The other things? More shocking to the eye than actual horror. There was no satanic practices (that I saw) but the memorabilia was always there. I found the initiation process quite silly because it was more optics than anything disturbing (actually hilarious). The university had strict rules on orientation then and therefore zero abuse happened during my years there. I cannot believe that they even introduced an indemnity form. If they did abuse students recently, they must be held accountable and the victims must get their justice. I will then openly talk about my own grievances that I've had with the residence. This really makes me feel bad, I generally have fond memories of the place.

There was literally KKK, white supremacy symbols and KKK hoods all around the room, I would say the issues are intertwined. We can not ignore either aspect of it.

I am a Maties alumni. A coloured person. Most people, across all races and genders, in general avoid Wilgenhoff. Why not, in the same breath, speak about the other Men's residences e.g. Eendrag, Dagbreek, Majuba etc who don't have these sorts of issues. You're generalizing, and using a very small of group of people to push your narrative about the entire University, its students and even the Cape. It's not a race thing, you're reaching, and then jumping to Cape Independence. Please go play somewhere else.

She mentioned everything from Cape Independence, accessibility and affordability. What does this have to do with Wilgenhof?

Could you kindly elaborate on the idea that there is any connection between this matter and racism, as well as elaborate on how the Cape Independence Party's foundation is rooted in nostalgia for apartheid? She’s making numerous assertions without providing adequate evidence. Additionally, her discourse appears to be laden with common Twitter buzzwords such as institutional racism, apartheid, and decolonization, which lacks nuanced analysis. She can do with some training in critical and independent thinking.

Those are not “buzzwords”, they are academic concepts. Look them up, maybe they will help you follow her very well laid out argument and analysis

These "ideas", which I understand without the need for additional research, seems to creep intoy discussion where a white individual could potentially be involved. They often appeal to low-IQ individuals. It provides them an avenue to engage without delving into a comprehensive and well-thought-out argument, allowing them to appear intellectually sophisticated.

This is some "Lord of the Flies" shit. People in authority have a responsibility to see to it that such evil is not perpetuated. There were similar practices in the hostel at Paarl Gymnasium High School. Giving young children over into the hands of other older kids to be abused like this is un-Christian. Parents and those running the institutions should know better than to allow such evil to continue. My orientation in Germany at Tubingen University consisted of the older students taking us through the town, showing us the best and most beautiful spots, and showing us the best places to drink delicious German beers. These barbaric Pagan practices should be stopped.

What do you think this kind of trauma does to a person's psyche? You don't need to bond with your fellow students through trauma. You will succeed or fail in your studies through your own individual efforts. Ditto for the rest of life. You don't need the kind of "guts" this supposedly gives you. You need faith in God. A kid who was at school with me died during one of these initiation practices when they made them drunk and dropped them off far outside Stellenbosch to force them to walk back. He got hit by a car. Rest in peace "Skom." Sadly I've met many preachers who protect this kind of rubbish, showing that even if you study theology, it does not make you an ethical or a good man. It's unacceptable and barbaric and most importantly, un-Christian.
