Stem cell donation: Step by step

I registered with DKMS 10 years ago at a little volunteer booth at a pharmacy. I received a call in April 2022 for additional blood testing; still was a match, signed all sorts of papers. Asked to wait through reminder emails saying I still may be needed. Now it's Oct 2022 and the patient is ready. Phone appointment tomorrow to set up the final bits. Patient needs bone marrow so.. ok. That's what I'll do. But I am surprised that my nerves are suddenly getting to me. I've given blood many times before, easy peasy, but this isn't that. I may come back and update this comment after it's all done.

@@alexc4538 Turns out the patient (or their doctor) doesn't want to do it until March. DKMS sent a form to my doctor for physical, and orders to my doctor for more bloodwork. I have some good hospitals nearby but I'll have to travel at least 2 hours away for the surgery, which is fine. That's all I know for now. Edited for better clarity

If a person decides to donate, a medical exam and blood tests will be done to make sure the donor is in good health.

I signed up to be a donor impulsively without knowing how involved and painful the process was and now I feel guilty to back out because I know the person who needs it is suffering more but errr.

Danielle Baxter register at delete blood cancer , you will get a kit to do a swab at home and send them back. If the match is found you will be asked to come for procedure.

Why are the stem cells leaving the country at the end of the video?

Stem cells aren't as easy to match to individuals like blood is. The donor and recipient have to carry multiple of the same cells in order to be a match, so you'll often match with someone internationally who just happens to need the exact stem cells you have. Hope that makes sense.
