An already punched coin makes an excellent template for marking the hole. I just align the two coins and use a fine point sharpie to draw around the inside and its slightly smaller so I can see it in the punch. Beautiful process and great work .

Thanks! I tried that early on but I had a harder time seeing it inside the punch. My eyesight isn't as great though. My brother did that when he helped me at Christmas. It is a great method. Thanks for mentioning it!

Layman's question - what is the reason to use a punch instead of drill? Just watching your videos I've already learned a lot about aspects of metalworking I'd never considered!
@CoinRingsfromTheMint6 жыл бұрын
Drilling is never as accurate as punching. 90% of the time the hole isn't centered when drilling. If you don't have a perfect hole, the ring is trash. It is the most import step by far.

Just a quick note. My mom watched this video and thought that I have a picture of Lenin on my desk. I have been slowly using foreign money to wallpaper the back wall... I am not a communist lol

I like the die set you had made. Will your machine shop make more? JasonWorks sells a complete set but I'm interested in quarter rings only and it's close to $300. Ouch!

+Matthew Lawrence Sorry he retired a while back. I would recommend using skip kings coin centering cards. That is a wonderful less expensive option. You can check out my video on them.

because of the high copper content will it make your finger turn green or does the nickel clad help prevent that?
@CoinRingsfromTheMint9 жыл бұрын
The copper nickel ones will to some extent but thd silver ones don't. Thanks! Skyler

I noticed that the last couple of clad rings that I've made at the top of ring where the outside (wider) end there is a line that circles the ring. It looks like coin is separating. I'm still practicing before I move to silver. Have you seen this before? Is it something that I might be doing? Suggestions
@CoinRingsfromTheMint9 жыл бұрын
I have seen the coin edge side of the ring split in the middle of the coin edging before. I think the times that I have seen it was with silver. Is it happening more than once? If not, it is probably just a bad joining of the copper and the nickel outside. Thanks! Skyler

Question. Using the Harbor Freight 9 piece punch & die set with a 1 ton arbor press from Harbor Freight. So far have not gotten a single hoe centered. Could it be shifting in the press or is this user error. I've put a piece of paper towel under the coin to move it to center also to make sure it is tight. Any suggestions?

It takes a bit of doing to get a hole punched with an Arbor press. I'm guessing that it could be shifting as you are punching it. A simple solution would be to get a coin centering card from kingscoinringtools.com. I always used tape instead of a paper towel. Put the coin on the sticky side, center it, and then fold the tape onto the sides of the punch. That ensures the coin can't move.

I tried to make a ring out of a jfk half dollar, I drilled a 1/2 inch hole, I hit it down my mandrel with a mallet, and it got to 22mm, spoilt a coin. How big of a hole do I have to make in order to get a 19mm ring?
@CoinRingsfromTheMint9 жыл бұрын
It is really different for everyone. I would try a 7/16" hole to see where that gets you. You can also rougher up your mandrel with some sandpaper. That way it slows how fast it goes down the mandrel. It will allow you to close it up tighter.
@TheLazysketcher9 жыл бұрын
Coin Rings from The Mint - Change You Can Wear You know, I actually had grease on the mandrel when I made it, so maybe that's why it got so big. But ill try a 7/16 hole, luckily I got another coin coming.

My problem is when I go to whack the punch in this same 9 punch set, I'm only denting the quarter and it's not actually punching through. I tried a 4lb mallet on a workbench, and i also tried using a 1/2 ton arbor press and I just can't get it to go all the way through. I can puncture through a dime, but nothing thicker than that. What am I doing wrong and how can I proceed? (Thank you! to anyone with advice!)

Keep hammering until it goes through. You can make sure the coin is snug in there with paper towels.
@charliestovall99538 жыл бұрын
why is video for making a ring from a quarter, and you use a 4bit piece?
@CoinRingsfromTheMint8 жыл бұрын
+Charlie Stovall Haha! I had to go back and check the video. You are right. The mechanics of making the hole are the same though.
@RandyRemington9 жыл бұрын
you used the sharpie as a guide to do what? the whole idea was to center the hole and you glossed over that.
@CoinRingsfromTheMint9 жыл бұрын
Did you finish watching the video? The sharpie was to make a centered circle that could jyst barely be seen inside the punch guide hole. Once it is lined up, it is perfectly centered.
