Love the fact you're an IT expert but forgot to share the desktop :) and that you admitted it! Good man.

Keep going Nick (please). My RPi4 arrived in the post this morning (with starter kit); and I have my SD card, so I'm downloading and flashing OpenPlotter alongside watching your video. My Motissier HAT is on its way from Germany with a GPS puck, and I have a new 530mm whip aerial from Italy for the AIS. Gone smoothly so far (but I do have over 40 years of IT experience to call on) except that my HDMI splitter doesn't recognise the RPi properly. Assuming I can get this working on the desk, I plan to install it "headless" on the boat and connect to it from phones and tablets. For anyone keeping score, spend so far is about GBP290, but maybe GBP40 of that is "getting started" stuff that won't be part of the final solution

I would like to encourage you on keeping these videos coming. i am gathering parts to build my own openplotter and i find this format much easier to understand than any other. my boat has no electronics installed at all, so i believe this is a very cost effective route to take. I am very interested in the pypilot aspect, but the motor controller has me a bit stumped, so im interested in seeing how you do that. untill next time.

So it probably depends on the size of your boat, but your boat is small enough, I believe pypilot (part of openplotter) can be used to create routes for a tiller-pilot. That seems like the easiest way, but I'll be looking into this, and hopefully will be posting a video about it down the road.

Thanks. I'll probably put up a full tutorial on all the pieces that go into setting it up and then call it quits, but I'll be glad if people find it useful.

@@nicksails7655 Hay Nick thanks for the reply, yes i have a smaller tiller boat. i am intrigued by the designer of pypilot using a windshield wiper motor for the auto pilot. While not the most aesthetic solution, it does have the advantage of being cheap and readily available darn near anywhere in the world, if you go that far of course.

nick sails awesome! I am looking forward to the full tutorial. Do you have an ETA? Thanks again for putting together the series!

I'm enjoying the video series; thank you for taking the time to make them! Something that I'm hoping you will address along the way is a display for the solution. About a year ago, I purchased a Raspberry Pi 3+ along with the official Raspberry Pi 7" Touch Display - basically, just to play around with (not related to OpenPlotter or OpenCPN.) The RPi3 was really cool, but the Touch Display was pretty awful: (1) It pulled too much power from the power supply (official RPi power supply) such that the RPi3 itself would often not get enough power and therefore have to throttle down, so the lightening bolt symbol would appear. (2) The screen resolution is only 800 x 480; therefore, many apps wouldn't fit on the screen. So, you'd end up having to scroll around just to be able to click on an "OK" or "Cancel" button. (3) The screen is only 7" so not much bigger than an iPhone XS Max, but with far lower resolution than the iPhone. I'm thinking that for something like OpenCPN, it would be nice to have a 10" - 13" screen with capacitive touch that has at least 1280 x 1024 resolution and can run on 12v.

Pi i quite limiting in terms of power and storage. Maybe proper arm linux with nvme drives(as a proper media/navigation server) NUC or smth, and connect to it using tablet from the cockpit?

Check also BBN Marine OS for raspberry pi4. Many free and opensource boat software packages preinstalled.

Nick, I am just getting into this process. Do you still feel the RPi 3 is a better bet than the 4? See folks adding heat sinks to 4.
@SailingYachtZora4 жыл бұрын
thats just because it has a lot more computing power, so generates more heat. Which isnt a big deal

Hello, we are in the process to add a Raspberry to our b´navigation. Does the OpenPlotter work with an Raspberry Pi 4 ? Is there a way to install openPlotter when I got Raspian Buster already installed?

Nice videos Sir! But what Raspberry Pi version do you use for this spesific setup?
