I appreciate your great service. When I did the forth and fifth step work with my sponsor, we used page 552 of the Big Book, and the step work contributed significantly to my recovery. About 13 years ago, a spiritual awakening saved my life. I have been sober since then and extremely grateful for this program. Thanks for letting me share.

I have been in AA and worked steps. I have been a chronic relapser for 3 decades. Recently I transitioned to NA. I found more acceptance through this program but I loved AA, I just wasn't willing to do what I had to do to get it. Maybe now the gift of desperation is finally strong enough to actually work the Program. Anyway I like the step working guide in NA because it asks me a lot of questions that really made me take a hard look at my self centeredness. I found your videos when I was looking for help working the 4th step and it's helped me a great deal. Thank you for your help!

anger is a secondhand emotion, it comes from hurt. i buy those spiral ring note book. i open it up, so i have two blank sheets looking back at me. I draw a line down the middle of each page. that gives me 4 columns. paper is cheap, drinking is not.

Wow thank you so much! You have explained this in the best way I have ever heard. Using resentments to protect me as a defense weapon, I am blown away how correct you are. It’s all about our ego. I want to forgive and let go. When you got to the inventory about my part in the resentments, my body went bizerk. I felt rage and seething anger and wrath coursing through my whole body. I was screaming in agony on the inside,” what do you mean my part in all of this? What did I do wrong? It’s not my fault!!!!”, and I felt a huge anxiety attack coming on, but I’ve sat with emotions here now and am praying to God to help me surrender this egotism and pride. Thank you brother in Christ.

Thank you. I have been struggling with starting step 4, perhaps because my resentments are stronger than me, and I relish the anger I have towards all my wrong doers, but your video has reached me. I will begin my journey towards forgiveness. I have to in order for me to regain some sense of sanity in my life. Again, thank you for reaching out to not only myself who has struggled with starting step 4, but to the many who needed some extra guidance with this step. You take care.

I found my fourth step quite difficult at first then I applied my belief in Jesus Christ and realized I was not alone and I didn't have to carry any resentments. I still believe I might have a few of them though as I dig deeper in my recovery but I know now to trust in God with any all my problems and I trust and believe he will help me and lighten that load

It WORKS if you WORK IT! As an Al-Anon I spent over 2 years going to meetings, thinking that I didn't 'need' a Sponsor. That fellowship, meetings, and my stubborn self-will could bring me serenity. It could not. I too needed to work the 12 steps out of the Big Book (BB) of AA. I had to swallow large chunks of truth about myself in order to finally start to be free. Not easy. Not fun. However, what was the alternative? I could continue to obsessively control and "Help" and when that fails, as it always does, play the victim and then the martyr? Over the course of 20 years, I've been through countless therapists, self-help programs & bought a library of books and none of them gave me relief. Finally, with the help of a BB Al-Anon Sponsor, I was hard-core honest about what 'my part' was in my story. The writing in steps 3 & 4 lifted the scales from my eyes. Thank you David for your amazing service work!

Interesting view and well put. I appreciate the way you identify and breakdown the "affects my" of self. I think most people are not aware of the connection of how the injured self manifests in our minds and actions. This seems to be the fuel of resentment they try to get us to see and offer to replace with a "key". Invariably "self, manifested in various ways," drives my need to take back the control or power through my reaction to resentment. The powerless want power, right? Consequently "selfish" ideas and/ or the "fear" materialize as "self-seeking" -- "dishonest" behavior (where we, "Referring to our list again." ) is my part and identifying those seems to be "where we were to blame " and the " faults"..."we place before us in black and white". I do that with Selfish, Fear, Self-Seeking, Dishonest, in the same fashion you break down the "affect my". Looking at it that way shows me how self manifests into the troubles I have and leads to the drink I will take. I've really grown to appreciate "the key to the future" that is offered with the idea of, "mastering" our resentments. That process of meditation, prayer and action, sandwiched between "...our injuries" and "...our own mistakes", has been the true relief from resentment and one of the more tangible spiritual tools of AA ...along with "...outgrow our fears" and "right ideal" for relationships. Truly transformative.

What if you seemingly got over your resentment of a person, long before starting the 12 steps? Should I include them in my inventory? Am only asking because I am having a hard time truly finding people I've ever resented, let alone still resent. Like what if I got over it that day? Like really, the 12 steps are really presumptious, like who said I was angry at someone?

forgiveness doesn't mean the person is necessarily back in your life. to the contrary, they are now out of it. i was going through life with school teachers invisibly chained to me. forgiveness is like a pair of bolt cutters. it cuts the chains of people I am dragging around with me. I could not see the people, but i was dragging them.

It's an excuse to be and remain a victim. Once you figure this part out, life looks totally different. Then, get outside counseling. Don't rely entirely on AA to get to the root of your problems. I do not trust people in AA enough to keep my vulnerabilities private.

i cannot think of a better solution to go over resentments after all we are ppl who are damaged and need to repeat process until it leaves us and can truly forgive and forgive and move on, it is great that the fellowship has grown and the 12 steps are used accordingly. no one has to stick to th sponsorship relationship and must assert themselves to the work need doing set by sponsor, and identy for themselves if their sponsor is the right person or not AA works beautifully and has evolved, you can choose whether you do steps or not recovery is unique for ach person, i have not had a drink for 23 years and never did the steps so steps for me are not a necessity, just attending a meeting is fine for me. this video is such bullship if youre affected by aa and dont wish to be a part of it GO, making videos wont get you well

I practice the art if letting go and acceptance. But they told me to write down my resentments. I don't have resentments from the past any more. I keep getting resentments every now and then though. What do you think I should do. Should I still use 12 steps though Buddhism has been working for me?
