@@simplifygardening hi Tony. Most people seem to recommend a pump and filter. Do you not need one for a pond this size? Also, how do you handle overflow? Thanks.
@simplifygardening5 жыл бұрын
@@richardhaworth4043 Overflow just goes to the garden. The pond has load of oxygenation plants, its been running since this video was made no issue and has both fish frogs and newts in it. If I could I would have put a small filter and pump, but then it doesnt become a wildlife pond and they require still water
During this covid 19 lockdown I decided to try build a pond and after watching this I did just that. I live in the country but its amazing how much life it brings. I planted many flowers around it too and its thriving. Didn't think it'd be so rewarding

Yeah, it's such a great idea. Stops the herons from getting the fish and everything can hide from each other
@karenlam29887 жыл бұрын
I almost immediately got rid of the rubber mats I used to make hiding places in my pond. Instead, to solve the problem of no room for bricks or stones on my one narrow shelf I put an oblong plastic kitchen refuse bin on it and put a clump of iris back in the pond so that its thick mat of roots acted as a roof on top of it and hid it from view. I weighted the roots down with stones. In the bottom of the pond I submerged a spare plastic watering can for the (hoped for) baby fish to hide in. I only had three fish left because of herons. I made a mini beach for creatures to gain access to the water and protect the lining with the help of stones, gravel, and waterproof cement. The fish seem to like their new hiding place and the hoped for baby fish are now a reality! So pleased I found your video and learnt how to improve my pond.
@simplifygardening7 жыл бұрын
That is fantastic news, I am glad that its now working and the fish are loving their new home. Just be mindful the cement doesn't change the ph and make it alkaline, if it does but a pond sealer and seal it and you're perfect. any luck the heron will be a thing of past and this time next year you will have loads of baby fish.

Thank you so much for your information! After I saw this I realized the shallow space I had once provided for creatures to reach the water in my own pond was now over grown with iris. I have now planted the iris in the ground beside the pond instead and made the slope where they were more gradual with stones and gravel. Also I had made no provision for the fish to hide, apart for the weed. As there is not enough room on my shallow shelfs for bricks and stones as you have I made some speedy improvisations this morning. I took up my two rubber door mats that have holes in them! I laced them together lengthways and hung one side over the edge of the pond, so that it covered the edge of the lining and also hung down slanting over the shallow shelf to provide a hiding place. Then, where the mat was in the water, I took some of the copious moss that grows in my pond and pushed it into the holes of the mats to grow there. I also put stones over the part on the edge of the pond to secure it and planted ivy to drape over it for camouflage.It looks good and I hope the fish like it.
@simplifygardening7 жыл бұрын
That's a great re use of mats, and I'm sure the fish will love their new hiding place, esp if a heron is about. glad the videos have inspired you to make alterations in your pond, :)

I see so many people building these small ponds for wildlife please realise that frogs will often hibernate in the bottom of ponds so ideally it needs to be at least 3 feet deep or in a harsh winter they will die as the pond will freeze right down to the bottom to prevent this u can also put a polycarbonate sheet over a shallow pond, not all the time as the water then may get too warm you just need to prevent it from freezing.. good luck with ur ponds.

Soak the ground first, like really pile water on over hours or days, get it really wet, then crow bar, pick, lots of grunting! Often I find a long handle "deep hole" shovel (made by Cyclone Australia) is very effective if you just hold it in position and put all your weight on it, and wriggle your body so all of your weight is doing the work. I rarely jar my body with smashing into the ground with things like picks and mattocks any more.

***** many thanks! I really think I'm building this.... This was not my plan, but it has all the features I would want, I had never thought that you could do the slope with the gravel and the stones that keep the gravel contained. It erases all the negative I saw concerning having a pond in the garden. I think I'm going with high grade clay compacted and in thick layer instead of the cloth. I'll let you know in this comment thread if I actually build it. Should be before next spring. Right now I'm building urban scale swales and modifying the gutters to harvest rainwater. Thanks again for uploading this, totally changed my mind about a pond. Julien

Excellent vid. A few years ago I built an ornamental pond for fish and a separate wildlife pond at home very similar to yours. I’m about to build a further wildlife pond on my allotment. You have given me some great ideas. How did you manage to source the nice big stone flags that surround the pond.

Fab job! Thank you for the tips. Could you please guide me on the measurements of the liner and pond cover needed please? For that size...I have no idea
@simplifygardening4 жыл бұрын
Yes I can. google search for pond liner dimension calculator then just input your length breath and depth and it will tell you what size you require

What plants do you recommend to oxygenate and avoid using a pump? Where do you buy from?

Looking great Tony, when that pond established itself it will be a haven for wildlife... Love the look of it too, it's a shame that due to H&S we are not permitted to have ponds on our site or I would build one. Pest control the natural way
