How strong are those large stones with no gravel in them? Looks like they'd be good for decorative uses but not strong enough to be used as actual stepping stones.

Great instructions on the process. Do you know if it's possible to use press-in letters to put a name or date??? It would have to be out of the mold to do the correct side.

hello! just curious. does applying mold release have an effect when painting the concrete when it's dry? especially with motor oil. i mean, will the oil on the dried surface going to cause the paint to not adhere well?

Motor oil does, the PAM cooking spray does not. After several rainy days they became indistinguishable.

I bought all 3 sizes of the paw mold from Amazon. On Amazon it said these molds are used with concrete. Your video here uses mortar. So does these molds work with concrete?
@autumn8468
@autumn8468 2 жыл бұрын
Mortar is a mix of cement with sand, add water and you get concrete:) Yes, these molds work with any concrete mix.

Question. Why are you using mortar mix and not cement. Won't these crack if. walked on?
@autumn8468
@autumn8468 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question. This mold has a very fine texture and I didn't want to use vibratory table for the video. I used mortar mix (due to it has no gravel, only sand) to get rid of air bubbles easier. This mold is around 2 in thick, cracking shouldn't be an issue. The stones I made are still good today. For the stepping stones I prefer CTS 24/6 fast-setting concrete mix. To prevent cracking I'd use anti-crack fiber reinforcement (32-500 concrete fibers).

I recently tried Portland cement and made a stepping stone. I let it harden and next day I stepped on it and it broke in half. Then I saw your video and purchased mortar mix. I haven't tried it yet. Do your stepping stones break easy? Is Mortar mix better and stronger than regular Portland cement?
@autumn8468
@autumn8468 3 жыл бұрын
@@angelaallen2190 The stones are very fragile the next day with most concrete mixes. With the Mortar mix we wait ~2-3 days before use them. BTW, the common belief is that concrete takes 28 days to reach most of its strength. However to speed up the process try any fast-setting concrete. The one we use for all our new molds is Cement All by Rapid Set. It's expensive, but the quality is awesome. And it really takes about an hour to get the stone. For any fast-setting concrete, don't mix too much, keep in mind that you have about 20 minutes working time.

@@autumn8468 Ok thank you. I guess I should have given it more time for the stone to set before stepping on it. I'll make sure my next one I'll let it sit for a few days. Thanks for responding and for the advice.

@ihelpdogs

Cement mix is much stronger than mortar. I question how strong these would be if used as stepping stones that people actually walk on... they'd probably crack fairly easy.
