Thank you Karen. This is only my second ever painting (at 41years old) and I wanted to mark the anniversary of our still born daughter , Stella Poppy, for my wife. This tutorial was so helpful in creating my version. My poppies need practice as they are a bit blobby but I think not bad and hopefully she will like it. Wish I could attach a picture to show you. Thank you again.

This is a dumb question, but is there a reason for painting the entire canvas dark blue, other than to not have a blank canvas that you're working off? Because you then seem to be painting over the blue with other colours. And it looks like the blue is then irrelevant. Thanks in advance.

It is a good idea to set a tonal ground before you start painting! You can use whatever colour you like. Sometimes I will choose a bright pink or black even! You are right you end up covering the entire under painting! However it can be very helpful with judging tonal values and stops little white speck of the canvas coming through. You can also leave some of the underpainting if you like to create colour harmony. I hope this was helpful :)
