Something to consider in the future would be adding a threaded union joint between the two 90 elbows. In the event you ever needed to swap out the filter cap or the Venturi (both with threads) you could do so without having to reconstruct the entire assembly. Great video, thanks for putting this out there!

Are you filtering after the chiller? Also, have you considered or experimented with a smaller diameter hose from the chiller to the plunge? My thought is it would slow the return in the chiller making it more efficient (colder).
@kenbrown8186

I know in a hydronic heating system using radiators, water will take the easiest path all day. One radiator would be full hot and the other would get zero flow and be cold. It doesn’t take two routes unless it’s forced to do so via a “balancing valve”, which is installed to throttle the water going the easier path to equalize flow. Your system might work - and it sounds like it does- but it’s more luck than anything if that’s the case. An easy test would be to run the pump before the outlet side of the Venturi and the filter are connected and see if water flows out of both. If it doesn’t,, an inline valve on the route that has the flow could be installed and incrementally closed until good flow is observed from the other route.
@DIYColdPlunge
@DIYColdPlunge 4 ай бұрын
In this instance, the venturi is the "balancing valve." This setup keeps the plumbing system running the most efficiently - filtering, creating the vacuum/suction and minimizing loss of total overall flow in your plunge.

When connecting my ozone generator to the Venturi inductor doesn't matter if my ozone generator has a built-in pump?
@whumsi2

Will this setup work if you have a pump/filter combo upstream? In other words, you create a bypass that is just a simple tee, one outlet that leads to the venturi and the other is straight pipe or tubing that joins at the other end of the venturi?
@DIYColdPlunge
@DIYColdPlunge Жыл бұрын
That should work, there's nothing special about having the filter below, this is just the most space-conscious setup if you are starting from scratch. I would put the ozone first as it needs a certain amount of PSI to create the suction 👍
@RT-qz5ci

Does this design allow some water to go through the pump and not get filtered? It seems like the water is either being filtered or being ozonated, but not both. Could you just put the black venturi injector piece inline?
@DIYColdPlunge
@DIYColdPlunge Жыл бұрын
I have another video that talks through some of it, but you don't want to restrict water flow that much. And as soon as the filtered water hits the tub, it's no longer "filtered." You'd need to filter into a new tank for all the water to get filtered in one shot.
@808kea808

Hello quick question. I built a cold plunge out a stock thank and am using a inline filter right after my drainage line. Water isn’t crystal clear and now I’m thinking of using a water filter like you have in the video. Due to installation it may not be possible to install the new filter in place of inline filter/stainer could I install it before my return valve? The line that send the water back Into the cold plugs after the chiller? That line has more space to accommodate the size of this thing. Or does the filter have to be installed by the drain line

is it possible or would it be better in line vs parallel to each other? Like have single flow of water go first through the filter and then through the ozone so its treated with both? vs having some water be treated with ozone and other water be treated with filter?
@DIYColdPlunge
@DIYColdPlunge Жыл бұрын
No, it would restrict flow too much. Your tank will turn over many many times throughout the day so your water will be treated and filtered many times over.
@scheidigerch
@scheidigerch Жыл бұрын
I am a little confused about this setup. Isn't the resistance for flow through the venturi injector much smaller than through the mechanical filter? I would expect most water to flow through the Venturi injector (path of least resistance) and the filter only catching heavier particle that land in the lower branch due to gravity. Does your filter get dirty at all? Am I misunderstanding this set up? Is the flow resistance of the venturi injector comparable to the filter, is that why it is working?
@DIYColdPlunge
@DIYColdPlunge Жыл бұрын
Hey! The filter definitely gets dirty. Because the venturi condenses down, majority of the water flow goes through the filter. Gravity doesn't contribute much to the system at all, its all flow-based.

It seems the norm is to run the filter system after the chiller/pump (mine is a combo unit), why is that? Wouldn't we want to filter the water before it hits the expensive chiller, to prevent sand/dirt getting into the chiller? Why run it after?
@DIYColdPlunge

To protect it from ozone, and to prioritize suction at the venturi. Any debri that gets through the strainer, & pump (in my opinion) likely won't harm the chiller.

Do you see any issues with putting the tee for this, after the filter? so running into filter, then out to a loop with the ozone generator within it? My concern would be putting this inline with the filter might eventually lead to sediment debris clogging the line since it's receiving non-filtered water.

You could set this up a number of ways, and what you outlined makes sense if I'm visualizing it correctly. BUT, if you have some sort of strainer cap, that shouldn't happen. And if anything, it would affect your pump not the filter/venturi. No wrong way to go about this though!

From pics I've seen the Plunge tub has two pumps an intake ambohr wp-D800 pump and some other pump for the return I believe it's a Jeboa. Whats the reasoning behind setting it up in parallel like this? If it was full flow through the filter then past the ozone Venturi you could likely run a smaller pump and lower overall electrical consumption. Am I missing something?
@DIYColdPlunge
@DIYColdPlunge Жыл бұрын
The main reason is to maintain the flow rate of the water - which most want for a few reasons. The venturi injector needs a certain PSI to create suction. Your chiller also needs water to move at a certain rate to function efficiently and keep the water cold. The electrical consumption difference on a pump is going to be extremely minimal. From a user experience standpoint, moving water will break down the thermal barrier your body creates.

No... and even if it did, as soon as it returns to the tank it would be in contact with unfiltered, unsanitized water. The only way to get 100% filtered water would be going from one tank to an empty tank. The number of times the water turns over through the system is the key.

If you are using ozone indoors you will want to very closely monitor it - from what I have read it seems the recommendation is to run it for a small interval each day when it won't be in use, make sure there is a tight lid on the tub and have a fan/ventilation available if needed. I think you need to put the filter and injector in line. now half of the water is filtered and half is ozone treated. if they are inline (one after the other) then 100% of your water is treated in both ways. or did I miss something? really asking
@DIYColdPlunge
@DIYColdPlunge Жыл бұрын
I like your thinking! Most pumps will output between 1000-1800 gallons/hr. On a 100 gallon tank (that probably has 80ish gallons in it) the water changes over many times. Ozone generators should run at least an hour, maybe 2-3 depending on overall use so majority of the water will see ozone a few times over during that time span. Putting the venturi exclusively in line would greatly reduce the flow rate, affecting overall water circulation and making the pump work a lot harder. The ozone will also meet up with the water after it runs through the filter anyway. This configuration is the best of both worlds.... I totally realize this is a ramble but long story short this keeps the water moving so more water overall can be both filtered and "ozoned" 😂 Does that make sense?

All these comments make sense...but to get the best of both worlds it seems like the parallel part should be after the filter. That way all water is filtered, then some is split off to the venturi tube for ozone, then rejoins the rest. Anything wrong with that scenario?
@bhatton87
@bhatton87 9 ай бұрын
@@jwgreene2the thinking here is so the venturi also acts as a bypass in the case of the filter becoming plugged. This would prevent the pump or chiller from burning out if the filter plugs
@rodrigoricardi1777
@rodrigoricardi1777 3 ай бұрын
I also think that @jegreene2 is correct, I sell some ozone diluted in water systems and what we struggle the most is that for some reason the Venturi gets clogged,and then we have to unclogged by running water in reverse, when you pass your water without filtration through your vinturi you can also get the same problem of getting it clogged. And in your system there is no way to run water the opposite way to fix it.

I like the symmetry of your design unfortunately you have to put both stages of the filtration process in line. Just looking at the system you would think you’d get 50% of the water going through the filter and 50% of the water passing the ozone generator, but unfortunately that is not going to be the case. The ozone pipe side has little to no restriction to flow and the filter side will have a lot of restriction with the water having to be forced through the filter substrate. Since the water being forced into the system is able to choose the path of lease resistance, a very high percentage of your water will just flow up pass the ozone generator and very little will be forced through the filter.
@DIYColdPlunge
@DIYColdPlunge Күн бұрын
This isnt true for a closed system this small. You'd have to empty one container into another for what you are describing to make sense... as soon as the filtered water re-enters its no longer filtered. Also - most of the water is forced through the filter with how the venturi injector condenses down 👍
