The Texas Quilt Museum in La Grange Texas had an amazing display of breathtaking quilts! This is definitely a necessity to visit if you are in the Eastern part of Texas, it was only a two hour drive from San Antonio. I have NEVER felt so welcome in a place like I was at this Museum, the staff made me feel like we have been friends our entire lives. They change out the displays quarterly so plan your trip accordingly!
First exibit was Kaffe Fassett:
'Kaffe Fassett is one of the world’s most celebrated and influential artists and designers of all time. He’s put his unique touch and style on a bevy of decorative arts from quilting and patchwork to needlepoint, painting, and even ceramics. Kaffe Fassett: 85 & Fabulous reflects his influence as a leading textile designer and practitioner of contemporary crafts. The 30 quilts on display are made by Kaffe and his friends, Liza Prior Lucy and Kim McLean.'
Then I visited the Library:
'At the Pearce Memorial Library and Material Culture Study Center research can take place in a quiet setting among more than 6,400 publications and the Koval Antique Textile Collection allows study of textile samples from 1775-1875.' *
The next exhibit was the 2023 Houston International Quilt Show Winners
'A total of 18 winners from last year’s event will be on display in the exhibit Houston International Quilt Festival Prizewinners 2023. The quilts are all outstanding and will have Museumgoers studying each for their beauty, ingenuity, and techniques.' *
And the last exhibit was the Prism Play: A Full Spectrum of Art Quilts;
'This unique and optically bold exhibit allows gallery visitors to view a vibrant spectrum of color almost as though they were standing inside a prism. The exhibition includes 62 art quilts representing the work of 46 SAQA Northern California/Northern Nevada chapter artists.' *

I'm 72yrs old, born in Gatesville, TX., and I remember many times when my grandmother and mom had quilting bees. Some of the quilts looked like patch work, but many had a design. They drank coffee, tea, lemonade, and ate snacks while they chatted and sewed. The comforters were sure nice on those cold Texas nights, and with no central air and heat they were appreciated. My last two quilts were stolen from my car in 1971, and it broke my heart. I like quilting bees because on those days' we kids got some extra snacks. When I first moved to Florida, I read they had quilting bee classes at the University of Jacksonville, and I liked the idea of keeping the craft alive. Great way to get together, have fun, and make have a product. They made the quilts for themselves, and rotated the order, and some for charity. I've taken up too much time now. Just sharing.

I had a wonderful time there last week. We traveled from Las Cruces NM after seeing this post. LaGrange has a charming town Square just around the corner, with antique shops and upscale lunch food. And don't miss the fabric store next door.

Beautiful quilts. I can only look for so long and then my brain is full. I'd have to break up my visits into two hour increments over multiple days.

I could have spent days in just the library alone. I love all the quilts, they were all special. 'Monkeys in My Hair' was so much more intricate than pictures show, and was probably my favorite

Oh my goodness, what a fabulous museum. No wonder the Woman who work there are proud it. Such interesting historical pieces and I was amazed at The Tutankhamen Quilt especially for quilted hieroglyphics and portrait quilts for the colour spectrum to imply skin colour. Thanks so much for sharing this video with us.

All the quilts are fabulous, but the one of King Tut wowed me with the quilted hieroglyphics in the background. My second favorite would be Monkeys in my hair. Thank you for sharing!

Thank you for bringing this wonderful museum to us. Definitely worth a trip to Texas. I never can pick just one favorite but I am always in awe of quilts depicting people, especially faces. And the textile and book resource library access is amazing. As is the entire building and its history. Well done.

The Colorado Valley Quilt Guild have docents who volunteer. We also assist with the change outs. Wonderful asset to our community. Exhibits change out several times a year. Kaffe actually gave a lecture a few years back at the museum.

This Quilt Museum is a wonderful place, they have a Victorian garden outside which has a quilt mural on the wall. Next door there is a yarn and fabric store that is very nice. Several little cafes in town also.

Is is possible to pick??!! Many of the quilts were stunning, and inspirational, but "Monkeys in my Hair" is hauntingly beautiful, and beautiful on so many levels. That I love it so much surprised me as I am not a fan of "people quilts" or hyper-realistic quilts. But this one, *wow*.
