So appreciate your video targeting the "real" world! Made my first ever quilt for my great granddaughter (slightly oversized crib quilt, highest end quilt cotton @ $15 PY, min), you've inspired me to go back and calculate materials alone. I don't think anyone ever gave thought to the fact that bc I"m 2K miles away fm family (sadly) I had UPS shipping costs ($89 with my senior discount), along with hand made heirloom day gowns (2) with slips, beautiful cotton lace, etc. Called my gift box a "sprinkle box" since I had to miss baby showers due to distance and very ill spouse. Bless you for your labors of love and to think you're donating to charity (did I hear that correctly?) Be safe and stay well and continue your wonderful educational YT videos, not to even mention your beautiful work. God bless you dear one.

A close friend’s grandmother made around 100 quilts in her life and never started giving any away until recently. I have been incredibly fortunate to have been able to receive one of these quilts. After the blanket my own grandmother crocheted, one someone gave my parents as a wedding gift, the first blanket I ever made myself, and the baby blanket I made my nephew, it is my most prized blanket. When you know something is made with love and care, even if not intended for you, it feels warmer.

OMG: I live in San Antonio. SPARE PARTS is my favorite store for...well...stuff. ! I go looking for fabric (which I always find) but come away with bags of inspiring (and cheap) stuff. Patterns, picture frames, beads, paint, books. If it has to do with any craft, Spare Parts is the first place to look before any big box craft store. Warnings: 1) Take more money than you think you'll need, budget yourself. 2) ON WEEKENDS, GO EARLY. I have often encountered lines waiting to go in. The storefront is small and can only accommodate a certain number of people at one time. Remember to ask when they are taking donations - recycle YOUR leftover stuff.

Pre Covid I used to make cakes for charity events / fund raising instead of giving cash donation. I would then contacted by different people “ can you make me a cake ? “ I would give the customer a price for said cake usually around £ 35 ( $ 44 ) “Oh I don’t want to pay that much !” I don’t work for free and everything was hand made by myself. If you only want to pay £ 20 ( $ 25 ) go to the supermarket and get a cheaper cake that’s full of chemicals and preservatives. I may as well earn nothing for doing nothing than spend hours x 4 or 5 and work for nothing. I was contacted by a lady one Saturday for a first communion cake that she needed for the next day. I am not a shop I work from my kitchen. Surely she’s known about the communion date for literally YEARS in advance. I have almost given up cake making but I will make for friends etc and gift them instead of payment. Thanks for your great post.

Great video ma'am. I have never done quilting. I do crochet, and a bit of sewing. I really appreciate the time you gave to do this video, highlighting some truths about the costs of these crafts/hobbies/ arts....... Thank you Cheerio from Down Under 🌺

I tried asking chatgpt, and it said the following: Material Costs Fabric: For the quilt top, backing, and binding, you will need about 8-10 yards of fabric in total. Fabric costs can range from $5 to $20 per yard depending on the quality and design. Total fabric cost: $40 to $200. Batting: The batting is the middle layer of the quilt and typically costs $10 to $30 for a queen size quilt. Thread: Depending on the complexity of the quilting, you might need a few spools of thread, costing around $5 to $20. Other Materials: This includes things like quilting rulers, rotary cutter blades, and needles, which can add up to $10 to $30, but these are often reusable costs if you already have them. Labour Costs Labor costs are often calculated based on the complexity of the quilt design, the skill level of the quilter, and the time taken to complete the quilt. Here are some rough estimates: Simple Quilt: A simple design with basic piecing and straight-line quilting might take around 20 to 40 hours. At an average rate of $10 to $30 per hour, labor costs can range from $200 to $1,200. Complex Quilt: A more complex design with intricate piecing and detailed quilting can take 50 to 100+ hours. At the same rate of $10 to $30 per hour, labor costs can range from $500 to $3,000 or more. Total Cost Estimate Combining both material and labor costs, here’s what you might expect: Lower End (Simple Quilt): $260 to $1,250 Higher End (Complex Quilt): $600 to $3,250+

It’s frustrating to know that some people don’t see the cost of a quilt. I became a quilter because I wanted my kids to own a quilt but I knew I couldn’t afford them when they were little. Since then I learned that my son doesn’t really like quilts but he likes table runners for his home (at least one). My daughter loves her quilts and I totally enjoy making them for her and her friends as they are getting married. I also enjoy making baby quilts for my co-workers. Quilting pays off in the joy of being creative, the relaxed process (most of the time) and the happiness of the receiver. I knew then and I know now that it’s not cost effective to sell quilts.

I am a Quilter and that’s why I don’t make quilts to sell because people can’t afford what I would have to charge. I make them for gifts for my family, but that’s about it.

Prior to making a quilt as a gift for anyone, I ask myself if they are quilt worthy. Do I value them and do I think they would value my work? I have been disappointed once when I discovered a quilt was sold for only $50.....you just have to let it go and eventually I will. When I once charged materials and $100 for my time, I experienced guilt for charging for my time. So I only quilt or sew now as a gift. One day I will complete the first quilt for myself, king size, flimsy done.

How did the quilt coat turn out? I love what I see so far. Have you heard of Lady Lancaster quilt jackets? I'm trying to make the Aunt Ethel style. I'm making mini quilts to fit each pattern piece. I'm trying to design the pattern myself since I haven't found one close enough to buy. I'm having trouble with that part!!! What pattern did you use?

I used to live in MI and there was an annual Amish fair with lots of vendors. On the last day they had a much anticipated quilt action. Keep in mind that these quilts were hand quilted. The best ones usually queen size can sell for $3,000. Some people thought that was a terribly high price. When I asked them if they would quit their jobs, hand quilt for 8 hours a day and then after a year hope to make $3,000 - would they still think that was a high price? Because that was about how long it took the lady to quilt it - let alone the time someone else spent to piece it and the cost of the materials. They had a quilt shop and their fabric cost the customer more that $12.00/yd. Anyway, grrrrrrr...........

I love wal mart fabric. I have also noticed that the quality of some of the quilt store fabric isn’t much different than the fabric from wal mart and hobby lobby. There are still exceptions but I use my quilts. I’m not an heirloom quilter😂

I really think too that being able to buy such great knockoff quilts from like Cracker Barrel and Amazon makes people undervalue a handmade quilt. I recently pointed a lady to Cracker Barrel for a quilt because I just can’t keep doing them for people.

I have made several nice quilts as gifts but one quilt in particular that I made for my great nephew was especially well received. I bought the fat quarters from the dollar tree and backed it with flannel. He drug that little quilt around and it made my heart happy. That baby enjoyed his quilt. I’m a budget quilter but it does take days to make a quilt. I’ve been asked so flippantly to make quilts for people and I always wonder if they realize that they are asking for about three days of my life 😂

If you have no other choice than buying the commercial quilt it’s understandable, be warm. But if you can, it’s better to thrift it, at least then you can lessen your impact on the environment and divest your money from companies that benefit from slave labor.

We've become removed from how and where things are made and come from. Same xould ve said about farminf and our food, not just sewing, crocheting, knitting and the like. Carpentry, masonry, electrical, plumbing, septic cleaning/draining, i could go on, are all undervalued and underappreciated these days. And a ton of folks have ti undersell themselves juat to get work to pay the bills....

I don't think it's a "woman's work" vs "men's work" thing. My husband does woodworking and his work is also very under valued. I think it's a crafting and handwork undervalue thing. People think since it's just you that make that it should be cheap.

I don't understand people who don't value quilts that were once family heirlooms. FB market most are around 50.00 I just inherited a ton of quilts. I'm 55 I'll never use them all but I refuse to sell them for 50.00. so I guess I'll start gifting them for birthdays, weddings, ECT....
