I’m 57 and retired both from the military and law enforcement and I have a step-thru and everyone that sees it calls it badass. It’s a fun, comfortable ebike. My wife is short and a cancer patient and she has one too. It’s the reason she got an ebike because they are so big for her but she can ride the step-thru. By the way, they are beginning to sell more and more especially to seniors and those with injuries and disabilities. Glad they are making them.

I had this very discussion yesterday with another rider. We’re both over 6’ yet prefer a step-through. As you mentioned on numerous occasions, these bikes are big. And if you put a rear rack on it, it’s even more difficult to swing your let over it. But the main reason for getting a step-through is that pretty much anyone can get on/off and ride it whether it be a spouse, visiting guest or even a neighbor that want’s to test ride the bike.

Having the top bar makes the bike easier to grab and get up a few steps or to put on a bike stand or a bike carrier. As far as getting on, I lean the biker over and it's no problem with the top tube. It also gives me one more place to carry a few things like bungee cords or small items attached with straps. I do not think of step throughs as "girl's bikes" but more as uni-sex bikes for everyone.

I'm 5'1", waiting on my Pace 500 ST to be delivered to my local shop later this month. I barely fit on the medium, so I got the small and will put the seat up a bit. I love that there's an option for a small frame with 650b tires and step through, options you can't get with other brands at this price. A winning combo for someone like me, a shortie who's young but unfortunately has garbage joints from lupus. The only downside to not having a top tube is having less area on the bike to mount stuff. I haven't noticed any flex on the ones I test rode, and I'm a pretty thicc person, though to be fair I'm not doing any intense mountain biking. I think time and physical necessity will change the aversion to step throughs. As people age and face increasing difficulty mounting and dismounting their bikes, and see others make the switch to step throughs, they'll reconsider their priorities and realize personal comfort & safety are more important than some outdated aesthetic macho ideal based on external affirmation.

I bought a Trek Townie Go 5i back in October and I’ve put 1,500 miles on it since then. I’ve fallen a few times, but main reason I have fallen is trying to get on the darn thing. I’ve finally learned to lay the bike nearly on its side while holding on to the inner portion of the bars and then step over it, pulling the bike up under me as my right leg hits the ground. That kind of solved it. I just ordered a Himiway Zebra, and, guess what-I ordered the “girls’” version. Actually, I think we have to educate the biking world and the enthusiasts that “girls’” bike is kind of a misnomer these days. So, again, I enjoyed what you had to say about this.

As a child of the 80's, there was always the stereotype that step thru bikes were for girls. I actually got teased as a child for riding my sister's bike on occasion. Personally, I didn't care as long as I was having fun out riding... and I was. As I got older, that stereotype eventually went on the wayside. As for the Aventure, I'm torn between the step over (large) and step thru (M/L) versions. In comparison, both versions have the same reach length from saddle to handlebars, wheelbase length and the same head tube length. The step over allows for more standover height and saddle height. Being that I'm 300 lbs and 5' 9" in height, I can fit both bikes comfortably and I love that they can both carry up to 400 lbs. If I were to get the step over version, I would get the large frame bike in camo green. If I were to go for the step thru, I would definitely get the step thru in electric red. I've done my research into this particular bike, but for some reason, I just can't decide which version to go with. I'm just hoping that when I decide to pull the trigger, the Aventon will feel like a large bike to me.

The stepthrough was a marketing ploy of the 1890s to catch the womens market when women wore dresses, my thought about the bar being there for men could also have been popularized so that men could have a bike that they could identify with, being something that a skirt wearer couldn't use. Any guy that has had their boys come into contact with the top bar wondered what moron came up with that design. Nowadays savy marketers promote stepthroughs to both sexes thus increasing market share.
@BoopSnoot3 жыл бұрын
Not true, the step thru made sense for women because 1) women are almost always quite a bit lighter than men, and a step thru chassis is an inherently weaker design with lower weight limits all else equal and 2) women wear shorts and pants too, but lifting your leg up high and putting on a show for everyone is still considered a bit racy because men already think about sex all the time without provocation 3) having a male and female specific frame also was a size difference as frames designed for women were almost always physically smaller. Its just a bit obsolete now because they can make beefy more advanced frames that still carry a lot of weight even with that big empty V shape and women don't really care much if men watch them or even encourage it being much more sexual with public twerking and wearing extremely thin leggings on purpose and bikes often come in multiple sizes.
@SBCBears3 жыл бұрын
@@BoopSnoot Yes, yes and yes. Add to it a point made in the video. I often stack things on my rear rack such that you would have to be abnormally flexible to get your leg over. The Aventon would be ideal if they made their display more legible and ditched the thumb throttle.

Three reasons: 1 sometimes I like to take a more relaxed sitting position on the bar instead of the standard lean over position on the seat when coasting, 2 it helps prevent my knees from knocking into each other, 3 I can hold more things on the bar
@Niniel28b2 жыл бұрын
You *sit* on the bar! :O I can only imagine the pain I would be in if I did that, but good for you if you can tolerate that. I also prefer an upright position though, so I have a bike where that is the standard position (Dutch bike), but I totally see that that is less versatile of course, since I'm then stuck with that position and can't shift to the more forward leaning position. But still... man, I can't get over the idea of how much I would hurt if I tried to sit on the bar - maybe the ones I've seen with the crossbar just had thinner bars than yours does. I kind of hope so. As for knees; Have you tried a step through? Unless your knees knock into the crossbar too and that's what keeps them from hitting each other, (which I then imagine doesn't help much since they still hit something fairly solid,) then they also shouldn't hit against each other without the crossbar.

I'm 6'3" and usually swing a leg over the rear tire and up onto the seat of an XL bike 22.5" seat post. The top tube is way too high to go over it in front of the seat. Two weeks ago I rode, for the first time, an ebike that was and older model with the battery pack on a rear rack sitting over the tire. A sharp battery corner caught the backside of my knee, leaving a nice wound. Had I stepped thru the frame in front of the seat, there wouldn't be a healing knee. Also am looking for a rear rack so the days of swinging over might come to and end. I agree that the step thru ebikes look cleaner, so maybe a step thru is the next bike.

I weigh over 200 lbs and expect to do a little bit of off-roading when the road conditions warrant it. It was a two part decision for me to get a step thru E-bike. I had owned a normal(?) - non-Ebike, for several years, and when I turned 70 I was having to lean the bike over to about 30 degrees to get my foot over the bar of my Men's bike. I tolerated it as something I'd have to live with if I wanted to keep riding. Then I had heart issues, wound up with a pacemaker, and started getting tired out after a few miles and started riding less and less. We moved to an area with numerous bike trails, and I wanted to ride but was afraid to venture more than three miles one direction. E-bikes were getting more popular, and I finally decided it was time to take the leap to a cheater bike. After months of shopping, and reading and doing more shopping, and more reading, I decided to purchase a not to expensive bike, and also decided that a girls bike is called a Step-thru bike because the manufacturers are marketing it to both sexes, and I should be a man, and get over the belief that step-thru means "Girls" bike. I bought my step-thru E-bike, and have not regretted it for a minute.

Although it's probably a hybrid between standard and step through.. because of the limited height on the step thru, but that kind of makes it look a little bit like a motorcycle. Especially with the wood vinyl wrapped battery. I think it's all about what you make it.

The looks of the step over is what i like and i am 6ft 1 and have no problem getting on or off. I use this as a commuter. The look for sure is the reason for me. Also, I don't know about this bike but it is proven that the top bar is for more structural integrity with combatting flexing when you peddle hard.

I'm short with bad knees. The former made it tougher to find a small enough diamond frame and the latter had me looking for an ebike. So I got a Rize Bolt X. 20" fat tires, a step thru frame and it looks murder in matte black, though I would have been happy to get most colors. I feel safer and in more control with my Bolt X and I would not go with any other bike type.

I built 2 ebikes with stopover bikes we already had so it was a no brainerd, plus need the cross bar for our bike rack system.

I did my research and the superior bar helps to protect the frame and it's easier to lean your weight sideways since that bar hold one of your legs.

I'm about to pull the trigger on a Troxus. The step over version is sold out in black so I was debating between getting the blue step over and the black step through. My main hesitation is worrying about the long term durability of the step through. They've got that little bit of extra metal welded at the bottom for structural support, but I would imagine that not having a cross bar at the top would greatly diminish the structural integrity of the bicycle. Triangles are strong. I'm probably gonna just go with the step through, I don't really like the blue color and it's got a 2 year warranty. By then hopefully I'll be done with college and able to afford a new bike anyway

I like both but I’m definitely leaning towards the red step through. I have mobility issues as well as pain issues and I feel like the step through will be easier on me.

Agree step through is easier, the colors are the only drawback but that’s changing.

I buy a non step threw for 2 reasons. 1 a standard bike is generally slightly more Ridgid. And 2 because high step is what I'm used to.

I am about 6'2" and can mount standard frame bicycles easily. But I like to have an ebike that can take my dog to the river or use for shopping. Soon as you put a big basket on the rear rack even tall people benefit from the accessibility of a step thru.

My only concern is that the step-over is more easily secured with a D lock to bike racks. Chains are both heavy and easily defeated with hydraulic bolt cutters.

I rode "womens" bikes for almost 18-20 years. My first nice big bike was a "womens" 10 speed. I even had a pink diamondback bmx bike during high school. Never really had anyone poking fun about it. I was asked a lot why. But hey, the bike was handed down to me by my best friends sister. And I loved that bike till it got stolen.

In the past 100 years or longer everyone including the Manufacture has claimed step-through bikes as Girls bikes, there for 99% of men will not purchase a Step-Through Bike due to being afraid of someone making fun of their manhood. Me and a lot of people these days are starting to see it slowly but surely the other way around. Now days I would buy a Step through for me and my wife, I am so short legged I can barely straddle a crack in the sidewalk, so a step through would be in my favor for sure.

I think it's human nature to always do what the pros do. The pros will usually use the bigger bikes with 27 or 29ers with the diamond frames. But those bikes are not very comfortable for casual riders. But still the image of those bikes will stay in people's heads. That's why I think men especially tend to first buy a diamond frame bike. Regardless of the reason, the step through makes way more sense for the typical casual rider. Most people I've observed tend to buy their bike too big. You can see them struggling when they stop.

Yes. I defies common sense. I guess we grew up making fun of guys riding “girls bikes” and it’s stuck even if they are more practical? These rugged cruiser bikes also didn’t look as cool as the “English racer” style even though in retrospect those other bikes were better. We need folks pushing commercially for practical being good?

Guys in Europe have no problems with step through’s. To them it’s just a bike that’s easier to get on. But in the good old U.S of A it’s all about bigger is better. lifted trucks, modified muscle cars,Tattoos,and beer guts and standard step over frames.

For me, it had nothing to do with it being a girl's bike, and all to do with the rigidness of a top tube. Most top tubes these days are slanted downwards towards the sea and quite easy to swing a leg over anyways. In some cases I want to go a little off-road and having a step through gives me anxiety that the frame will flex. Perhaps it never will, but having a single bar hold all my weight seems like a big task when going over bumps. The top tube give me a little assurance that the frame will never flex.

RadRunner is a step thru that allows you to fit a center console with great stowage capacity. You could unroll your beard and fit a sandwich buffet in there. Leave it open and it will catch all the crumbs.

I didn’t hesitate. When offered a choice, I took the step thru. I’m 62 and I don’t want to be swinging my leg in the air anymore. Imagine if you had to make a ton of stops, you’d have to lay the bike down to get on after awhile.

Yeah... The high bar is literally the *only* thing I don't like about my Himiway Cruiser. I get what you're saying about that rear rack too. Even at 6,4, I still barely clear that. I've only left it on the bike because I can hang Paniers off it. I even did seriously consider the Step-Thru, but it was a two month longer delivery time. Oh well. My next one will absolutely be a step-thru. Also, about the mirrors... I like bar-end mirrors too. They're certainly better than anything that mount inside the grips. But did you ever consider a digital mirror? Mine's pretty boss, cost about $65, and took about five minutes to put in. I don't know if you ever want to do a review on those ( www.amazon.com/Feisike-Handlebar-Function-Adjustable-Rotatable/dp/B08HMRSG58/ref=pd_yo_rr_rp_4/137-2235570-4854263?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B08HMRSG58&pd_rd_r=a5efa7f1-e369-44ce-93b7-9c6d58725802&pd_rd_w=eEVie&pd_rd_wg=2lZ9d&pf_rd_p=a3758ba2-6f64-43a7-b9f2-32c7970a3e6a&pf_rd_r=TQHEFEQCZK0QVGPHCR95&psc=1&refRID=TQHEFEQCZK0QVGPHCR95 ), but my experience is that this thing is better than any mirror I've tried yet. It would be interesting to see your take on this.

Even as a boy I was jealous of my sisters ‘girls bike. Especially with the style of ‘Painted’ on like pants. USA at the least,has fragile male ego problem. The EBikes are so massive,that I don’t think it’s really that obvious,that it’s a ‘Girls’ bike (USA). Nice quiet ride there Sir.

The Level Step-Thru has S/M or M/L frame options. The Level commuter has S-M or L frame options. I still opted for the StepThru. I am a pretty big guy so I was concerned about the frame size of the step-thru being too small.

That crossbar can be very painful on men. And to be honest, women are more flexible legwise. So nowadays, the whole crossbar thing is backwards. Frames are plenty strong enough. If hard-core moutain biking, the crossbar can help muscle about, but otherwise...stepthru!
