18:25 he is talking about korean table manner. What he is saying is You should hold your cup with both hands when other person fills your cup. Not only alcohol , receiving things with both hands is kinda manner showing politeness and respect to the opponent. (Not necessary for friends, or very close people. Its usually need with older people or in business relationship. )

Steph, Pete and Hays along with Ten & Eleven, you are a sweet family! You are all so welcoming to others and I think people sense that. Hence, the free gifts! That Korean grandpa was so excited to see foreigners visiting his town. Not many non-Koreans in the past have visited small towns like Tongyeong. Hopefully that will change. As far as the age questions, Koreans want to know age because hierarchy and language are based on age. For example, someone older can speak informal Korean to a younger person but not the other way around. Koreans also like to compare themselves to others who are the same or similar age group. It’s also just another way of breaking the ice and finding something in common. It’s very endearing to see your family having such a great time in Korea with the locals! Enjoy!

Koreans call sliced raw fish "Saengseon-hwe(생선회)" or "Hwe"(회). It's some different from Sashimi.
@StephandPete2 жыл бұрын
On this particular menu it was called sashimi and the menu noted a Japanese influence in the old cuisine of Tongyeong. But thank you for the info!
@ph-gu5rv2 жыл бұрын
I agree with @sunny. The menu is wrong. Sashimi is actually aged raw fish. In Japan sashimi is never prepared fresh. It is aged. Korean raw fish is called 회 (hwe) and is NOT aged. Also I heard the word "sushi" being used. I did not see any Japanese style sushi. Don't mean to be condescending but whether the menu said sashimi or sushi or whatnot.. if you're in a foreign country, you should learn a bit about the language, culture and history. It looks like you traveled to both Japan and Korea. Whenever I travel to foreign countries I learn their basic language, read up on the history and culture so that I don't offend anyone. It seems the post above was trying to be polite but at the same time offended and was trying to educate you but you got defensive.
@StephandPete2 жыл бұрын
@@ph-gu5rv there absolutely was sushi on the table, Japanese style, and referenced on the menu. I have also had hwe, and understand the aged vs not (you’ll see in the next video we learn all about this at Jagalchi.) We had hwe at this meal too, but also sushi. And actually, I edited out a clip of me talking about how the menu of the restaurant mentioned the Japanese influence in the cuisine because I knew it would be contentious.

The old man in the restaurant just wanted to welcome you and speak to you but he was a bit too drunk to do it properly 😂 He asked Ten’s age because the age determines the level of language he must choose. He wanted to teach you that in Korea the younger one receives the alcohol with two hands to show the respect to the older person who serves. The drunk man was asking how old your dad is.. age is important in Korea especially to the older generation. It sort of sets the hierarchy to begin with, and you either use two hands or one hand to give/receive drinks. I think the drunk man wanted to toast, but before toasting he had to figure out how polite he needed to be (two or one hand).

It's also fantastic to watch your parents being so energetic and lovely together. 🌸🌸 I'm glad your family visited and spent a good time in the south. I hope the south coast brought some lovely memories to your family. Anyway, the man is quite drunk and it looks like Hays was worried about the situation.😅 Hays definately possess a chivarly at such age already.💪😍 He's ready to there for the family.😆👍👏🏻 The man was exceedingly eager to tell you guys about the Korean drink culture and manners in specific like using the both hands to hold the glass while someone is pouring the drink into the glass. And also the person who's pouring must only fill the glass up to 80% etc., I'm only hoping that the man was more polite and reserved with his manner. I feel so sorry especially to your parents. I hope he didn't spoil the dinner. I can tell he looks very happy to meet your family at the restaurant by accident though.😅 The yacht cruise looks fun and amazingly romantic.🐬🌴

Just about the drunk grandpa.. everyone’s comments are pretty accurate. I think he was asking about age so everyone at the table could see who had to show respect vs receiving it. Since he was 6 years “down” (younger) he would then take that knowledge to show displays of respect to the older American seniors. He would use two hands to pour and receive a pour using two hands. Also he would turn away when sipping / pounding. He almost got close to being preachy about it but that’s what happens when you’re trying to quickly teach while also having a serious language barrier. His friends were monitoring him pretty closely and can even be heard saying loudly to him “that’s enough.. come back here..” Koreans not only take age differences seriously but they love sharing and teaching that drinking custom with everyone. Also reminds me of Germans who have to look each other in the eyes while doing “cheers” and drinking.
