I made ‪@gettheetothestitchery‬ favorite MODERN dress pattern. We wanted to do a collaboration that challenged both of us and making each other's favorite dress pattern seemed to be the most fitting. So I took on McCall's 7349, but still had to size up a little bit.
This sewing vlog was quite the task as it challenged me to not only use KNIT fabrics, but also challenged my knowledge of my own Bernina sewing machine.

Okay, so near me out, Steph: I, too, despise working with squirmyknits, but I sincerely think that you should revisit this pattern. Take a half inch back out of the front panel and cap sleeves, add the pockets and I think you'll be happier. It is a beautiful look for you and having a few toss-on dresses that are cute enough for public is never a bad idea

Also, if 100% cotton is an option, it will breathe better

It would also be super cute to flare the center panels out a bit from the waist to the hem!
@juliathelittle7007

@@hb7282 sadly knits are usually some blend of cotton and plastic. Perhaps a weave would work if the side panels are diagonal?
@RavenAttwoode
@RavenAttwoode 2 ай бұрын
@@juliathelittle7007 you can find 100% cotton knits, ones with cotton/rayon blend (rayon and viscose are still natural fibers), bamboo blends, and knits with 10% or less of the spandex or lycra. The teensy bit of spandex keeps the knit from drooping when you wear it, but still leaves it plenty breathable. I have bad heat sensitivity so I learned many tricks to be comfy and not sweat to death 😅 I'd love to try a linen knit some day.

one of the reason, I like this and Charlie channel. is because it showed me that is ok to be, just ok when sewing your own stuff. I'm not an idiot and everyone has similar issues than i do. And that's fine. Thank you girls, for showing me this liberating truth.

I would love to see you both redo the patterns, but with the other person in the room. So that when you hit a snag or have a question you have the other person who has probably already done the trouble shooting for it right there and you have a friend to help with fitting. I know that this was the collab issue when you're across the country, but i think it would have given you both a joy in the process and a chance to share what you love about what you brought to the table

I loved this . I always sewed with woven too There wasn't anything else when I started. In the 70's of course there was the double knits but they didn't stretch like the ones now. I said a Lot of 4 letter words the first few times I sewed a jersey. But the knits are so comfy to wear now that I am old. The right needle , and the right foot makes it much easier.

You guys are so funny! You're so similar on the WHAT you do (singing while sewing, steam of consciousness ramble) , but so different on the HOW you do (pattern adherence vs. winging it) Also, my experience with knits has been the same as yours: cutting shouldn't be this stressful, why so squirmy, etc. Some people just get knits and others (myself) just don't. Ugh

Love all of your videos! You look very pretty in both your day two dress and your final creation, which turned out great. You’re very talented. As a fellow Floridian, our recent May temperatures have been perfectly on target for our normal hot August weather. If you’d consider sewing a vintage sun suit that could also be worn with a skirt, I’m sure lots of ladies would be inspired to sew one for themselves and beat the sweaty weather we’ve recently been experiencing. Butterick (B6939) has a reissued pattern for a play suit with a matching picnic skirt or a crop top and shorts with the picnic skirt. Butterick (B6989) is a retro pattern for a playsuit with a dropped waist button on skirt and a jacket. Perhaps you have a cool vintage playsuit in your stash that your creative genius could tweak to perfection?

Depending on what fabric you have left you could easily make a few patch pockets to put on the sides or front, or do a patchwork of some of the scraps if there isn't enough of one or the other. Great work on it by the way, the colors and print look good on you. As far as the weather, maybe toss it to the FL Winter set(i know FL doesn't have much of a winter like other parts, but it does cool off in certain parts of the year from other times).

Oh those bought patterns are easy compared to our sewing magazine trace the pattern ones, where all the patterns are printed on top of each other in two or three colours depending on how many patterns they had to stuff on a set sized piece of paper. Both sides. So 6ish sets of patterns on one sheet of paper. I called it two coloured where's waldo yesterday to my friends. Edit: I also have knits that are produced as tubes. Always confuses me as to why. But guess who hard it is to cut into a floppy tube. PS: Pattern weights will help with floppy. slippery and wriggly stuff, I bought some dried peas to make some more. And laying it on top of a sheet of felt or a rough cotton sheet that has been clamped down will also lessen wiggling.

For all the dramas I really love the dress, the combo is contrast gold AND I was making new curtains for my place today and just before I walked away as I was going to throw my sewing machine out the window....I was singing the I hate everything about you song......it's a thing

I love when two of my favourite creators collaborate!!! I just finished watching Charlie’s video! I do not do woven patterns unless I reeeeally reeeeeeally like what is going to be made. I really appreciate your ability to work with woven fabrics

It came out well and it looks cute on! I preferred the pink over the blue but it's still cute!

That looks adorable! You highlighted all the reasons I was hesitant to ever sew with knits- they really are fiddly. But at least now I can make tshirts that are more comfortable than ready to wear. Great job on taking on the challenge! Love watching you sew.

You can use a circle of felt in your thread cap thing (that's what my Bernina has). Very durable!!
