Thank you, thank you for using hardware cloth instead of chicken wire as well as attaching it properly! People don't realize that a raccoon can pull a chicken through chicken wire one bite at a time. Kudos! The worst mistakes folks make are not providing enough up-high ventilation, making a coop too small for the size/number of chickens that will occupy it and using chicken wire for windows and runs. Love the run you made! ~Cynthia

Beautiful. Please add AT LEAST 2 feet of hardware cloth on the ground as an apron. Tamp down with staples. What you have is NOT enough. I would connect it inside, then use giant garden staples, and hammer it into the ground. Your flock is in danger. Also, why didn't you use hardware cloth on roof before you put the pvc panels? That's thin plastic, and isn't safe. I used them, also, but on top of my secure hardware cloth. Like you, I also screw my hardware cloth, instead of staple or ziptie. I've got alcatraz going on here. Nobody's getting murdered at my house. My animals are my entire existence ❤

Raccoons are so smart. I did what you did, plus, added big river rock around my coop. Nope! Raccoons dug under the 6 inches of hardware cloth, worked their way thru my electric door and into my coop. So, yeah. Build the hardware wire out about a foot and a half and cover that with dirt and rocks. No raccoons are having dinner on my chicks ever again! There is no “too secure” for me! Thank you so much for making this video! Your husband is awesome for helping you! I have to hire help while he works on his boat! (He’s a commercial fisherman) Really enjoy your videos and so sorry you lost your babies. I nearly died when mine got attacked. 😢 just terrible! Best of luck with your new flock! Yay!

Lots of great ideas here - I am placing the hardware cloth on the bottom of my run as well and placing dirt and sand on top of it to ensure nothing digs under to get in the run and allows things to grow up through the mesh

Great to see your videos again. Congratulations on your baby . I got a new job working at the Humane Society it's very rewarding but physically and emotionally exhausting. I also adopted a new dog from a high kill shelter saved his life.. he's adjusted very well to the pack we just started basic obedience classes as he needed socialization skills...he's a fast learner. Yes predators are awful with small birds sorry for your losses. It's chick season at tractor supply !!! I've had my chicken coop for 9 years. But to save money thinking of restore it painting it . My chickens are doing great they started laying eggs again last month. Yesterday went to tractor supply pick up some supplies and organic chicken feed has gone up $2.00 now 28.00 and shavings gone up $2.00 now $7 ... So I am stalking up last year there was a shortage of chicken feed that I get and other supplies so I made sure I got double and triple supplies. Your chicken coop looks wonderful keep up the great work. How are your ducks? I hope the predators didn't get your ducks I had to lock up my duck coyotes and foxes.

Id recommend putting your wire further into the ground because animals such as weasels will try to dig around 2-3 feet under the ground to get around the barrier/.
@robertbates553710 ай бұрын
Another consideration for cutting the hardware cloth. I built a door for my run and sandwiched the wire between the interior & exterior frames then used an oscillating saw to zip right through the wire

FYI - I had to run the hardware cloth 12 inches below grade to control predator pressure

I’m considering 8ft roof panels but margin of error of setting posts and accounting for the 2x6 or 1x6 up top seems like it might bump the measurements off for an 8’ roof panel or should I error on the side of smaller post set and have an overhang? If you'd like to give your birds more area to roam, build them a mobile chicken tractor, they're protected and you can place them wherever you want them to be in your yard. It gives them the benefits of free-range, and you get the peace of mind knowing that they're safely ensconced in a predator proofed area.
