There are a few different ways to set yourself up with long-term, passive investments in the stock market - and one of the simplest ways is a one fund solution. Today Den's going over the benefits to investing in one fund, and specifically why he's investing in XEQT - an all-equity asset allocation ETF, that's 100% invested in stocks. He'll also cover what in in this fund, why it might be the right choice for you, and how to get started with investing in ETFs like this one.
0:00 What fund am I investing in?
1:14 What is a 'one fund solution'?
2:12 Who sells ETFs?
3:24 Will I be buying a fund with bonds?
4:03 Why did I pick XEQT? What's in it?
5:14 What is the home bias effect?
6:07 How is VEQT different?
6:47 How do I compare different ETFs?

Been waiting for this one! I’ve also gone all in on XEQT for my TFSA/RRSP account. Higher weighting on US,lower MER, quarterly dividends, and honestly I find Blackrock’s UI better than Vanguard. Either one you can’t really go wrong. To note, BMO’s ZEQT just came out as with a 100% all equity ETF as well

Hi there, just came across this video. There’s one important thing to mention I don’t know if you are aware of. The relative weighs of USA, international and emerging markets within VEQT are market cap weighted and will adjust over time depending which geographical area is going to dominate the world’s economy. On the other hand the relative weighs of USA, international and emerging markets within XEQT are not market cap weighted, are simply static and will not change . That could make a significant difference in total return between the two over time.

Thanks for the video Den, I've a question about Management Fee vs MER. When you comparing the two, since the MER is larger then Management Fee does it mean that: Management Fee + other costs = MER? Or are they 2 separate amount, so say it said are 0.2 management fee and 0.3 MER, does that means you would have a total of 0.5% of fees involved? Thanks in advance

I keep grabbing XEQT these days. Between XEQT & VEQT just flip a coin, you can’t go wrong with either. I went XEQT because of more US weight and a slightly lower MER.

is it worth it to wait a while for a first time investor to pick up XEQT like since the RUSSIA invasion is going on I assume the price should drop. Should I wait a month or two to pick up some ETFs like XEQT once the price drops.

Home biase happens so many places. I hear people in Australia purchasing more Australian shares. I like global diversified portfolios but I am also astonished how poorly Europe does comparatively to the US market. Probably why Warren Buffet said he would put all his chips into VOO when he does for his family.
@donaldlyons17
@donaldlyons17 2 жыл бұрын
I don't know why people have a home bias when buying shares from companies. For example I am American but own cross listed company shares of TD Bank, TELUS Mobility, and PlayStation. If I could I would also buy baby bonds from foreign companies but I don't know how to do that yet.

@Teamshmo
@Teamshmo 2 жыл бұрын
Home bias for sure is real. Obviously people know more about their own country. However, most people who talk about the US stock market and are in the US have also done way better than most places. If you look at VOO in the US it's done almost 100% growth in the last 5yrs and only charges 0.03% MER. That is a pretty great buy. The other thing to look at when taking large ETFs into account is how strong is the country? The US isn't gonna just let their entire country fail. They have a huge military and very smart people who will stop at nothing to make sure they stay on top. Smaller population countries like Canada can't really compete. Canada's advantage has always been safety. None of the major Canadian banks have failed. Most of the large companies really have a monopoly over their market. It is very difficult to compete against existing companies. Less competition means less chance of losing your money, but also less growth overall.

Do you think Norbert's Gambit is worth it for an RRSP to avoid the 15% withholding tax
@valveman12
@valveman12 Жыл бұрын
Holding your US stocks in your RRSP is great in avoiding the 15% withholding tax on US stock dividends. Norbert's Gambit use in an RRSP!... Absolutely! and I do it all the time when I transfer a Cdn stock and journal it over to the US side of my RRSP. I usually use DLR to buy CDN and journal it over to the US by either calling my broker or doing it myself. If you do it yourself, it could take up to 3 days. If you contact your broker, it can be done right away. By the way, I've also used Canadian TD stock to journal to the US side of my RRSP. I hope this helps Vic.😁

You don't know what your fees are. The fees you are looking at are from the the fund you are buying but every fund they hold also charges fees not included in the fee structure. On top of those fees the secondary funds might also be holding funds that charge additional fees. Example is a US fund might hold SPY. In that case spy has a fee the US fund has a fee and the original fund has a fee. This doesn't even touch on the taxes each fund maybe paying.
