Wrong. A goalie can carry a team to a Stanley Cup championship. A guy named Patrick Roy did it in 1986 & 1993. Also, another goalie, JS Giguierre got the Ducks to Game 7 of the 2003 Finals. They lost, but he was so good, he was named the Conn Smythe winner (playoff MVP). A great goalie can get a team further than their talent on paper. Without excellent goaltending, you have almost no chance of willing a Cup.

I’m a basketball junkie but I have to admit hockey IS the hardest chip to win. Constant movement, constant lineup changes, constant collisions and fights are there. You better be tough to be a hockey player to endure all of that in just one game. And I like the fact that the Cup is the one and only piece of hardware that get passed around ONLY to the champions of that year. Winning it makes it even more special. P.S. That's why we love basketball everyone can play it and those who play it at the highest level are truly the best of the best on planet earth since there's no financial barrier whatsoever. But I don't think any program in the US comes close to the support programs provide for youth leagues in Canada. I'm sure there is some decent support/are decent programs in Russia, Sweden, and Finland as well. But particularly in the US with ridiculous income inequality gaps... I remember going to a Surfs Hockey game at the Convention Center in Atlantic City (Minor League Team). That was the first time I’ve seen a live hockey game I seen a guy take a slap shot straight to the mouth ice covered in blood dropped him. Several minutes later he’s checking back in to the game. As a fan of football and basketball, I have never seen a player take a 100 mph projectile to the face get up walk it off and go back to playing. Football on ice with an NBA schedule with an MLB roster and yet this sport doesn’t get the buzz it deserves is a sports crime.
@ethanliddle9008

What makes that even more amazing was that was a minor league player checking back in. There's the story of Ronnie Lott(NFL) having the end of his pinkie cut off to avoid the recovery process and be able to keep suiting up. However the one I love the most is Henrik Sedin was playing overseas during the NHLs lockout. He got slashed it broke his finger. Instead of getting it fixed he had the tip cut off so he could keep playing. It was a meaningless game in a different league during a year off. Still didn't want to miss a shift

Finals appearances? One 8th seed in NBA history has gotten there, compared to 4 8th seeds in the last 16 years alone in the NHL, one of which ended up winning it all. This isn't including several 7th seeds that have gotten to a Stanley Cup Final as well. Upsets in most other sports are considered outliers, whereas in the NHL, very rarely do all higher seeds advance in every round. That's why the Stanley Cup is widely considered the hardest trophy to win in all of sports. Parity in other sports have nothing on hockey.

Hockey's post season is the same as regular season games.....the game overall is low scoring...so any given night, a goalie can get hot and it's easy to have close games when the average goals scored in games is like 6 lol. Shooting percentage in the nba is usually around 50% too...If hockey goals were scored at 50%, the games would have a ton more differentiation in scoring. Baseball is the same way...it takes 1 pitcher to shutdown an entire elite offense and the games seem more intense because the scores are low

And there is no scoring system during the game that would allow more than one point on a made shot/play, so the intensity of scoring and defending seems it more tougher than other sport.

I love hockey and I would agree that it’s the hardest to win. The only other one I would say is harder to win is baseball but not from a physicality standpoint. Baseball is just so random that anyone can win the title. For example, the Braves had the worst record in the MLB postseason and won the World Series. Additionally, Ole Miss just won the college World Series and they were the last team in the tournament

I grew up watching and playing soccer (football), and basketball. In 1996 I watched NHL layoffs and since, I am hooked with the game of hockey. You have to be iron man to win the Stanley Cup! No other sports come close to hockey in terms of toughness..

Can't really argue the grueling NHL postseason. I think the Rays and Panthers had to play a back to back. But football is the ultimate team sport. U can be the best QB in the universe if u don't have a OL or a defense to stop somebody ur gonna be me when it counts.

You can be the best player in the world but if you don't have a Goalie who plays all 60 minutes stopping shots that vary from 60-120mph then you'll never achieve anything. See how your point means literally nothing.🤣

Didn’t even mention baseball. Postseason rankings are 1. Hockey 2. Baseball 3. Football 4. Basketball. Reasoning: hockey is very entertaining especially when it comes to playoffs and having great teams fight against each other. Need everyone to be at the top of the level. Many people who don’t watch baseball and understand it feel the sport is boring but in the playoffs when you have the best pitchers against the best lineups and any team can win from the 12 in the postseason is great. It feels like home advantage doesn’t even matter. Football is too similar to the regular season. No series just one game and then they move on which I get because of the physicality of football but we sometimes have seen matchups earlier in the season and there is no real difference between the two. Basketball is tedious. Games over and over again and they don’t change. Better ranked teams often win and it’s not as interesting as the other playoffs

There’s no question PK is right. Hockey is football on ice, with no out of bounds. Also, the hits are far more nasty because you’re on skates. The other guy could be coming at you at 30 mph.

The NHL playoffs is absolute war of attrition and the Stanley cup is awarded to the last man (or team) standing. Ask any player that’s made till the end and they’ll tell you how long it takes for their body to recover. It often spills into the next year, which is why we so rarely see back to back champs

I hate the whole “I like hockey because of the fighting”, hockey is more than that. The fighting is to send a message. It’s to pump your brothers up. It shows that nobody touches your goalie, captain, etc. and it is a gentleman fight. Once your down, fights over and both sides appreciate the effort. Name any other sport that does that?!?!?

Ok but hockey isnt football on ice. In football the play stops every 5 seconds and takes another 30 for it to get going again. The hits arent as hard and the game is slower. Hockey is if you took basketball, football and soccer, sped it all up 2x and then tossed it on ice.

An example that hockey is s ream game is with Gretzky. He was the most dominant athlete in any sport. In his prime he was traded from the cup winning best team to the 3rd worst team in the league. They drastically improved and he took them to the finals a couple years later but never won it. A non fan would say:"they guy didn't win the cup'" but a real hockey fan realizex how impressive the teams transformation actually was

There is no carrying in hockey. If one line out of 4 is a weak link, if your goaltender is having an "off night"... you have no chance to win it all. None.

The unpredictable nature of the NHL also plays a huge factor. The Aves were only the fifth preseason "favored to win" team to actually do it since 1990. Seeding and home-ice mean far less than in the NBA. Only 8 presidents trophy (best record in league) winners since 1985 have also gone on to win the cup. Only two teams have repeated in the salary cap era (Penguins and Tampa Bay Lightning). Most teams can't even make it to the finals series 2 years in a row. It's not a sport where it's easy to bandwagon and latch on to the "popular team". Because the "best team" usually is not the one to go on to win it all. It's exciting because every moment on the ice is valuable. You're either shooting against a goaltender standing on his head and stopping everything, or they're Swiss cheese, but even with that you're not guaranteed a goal on every possession. It's just as much a performance of offense as it is of defense and goaltending. That's why true hockey fans get excited and cheer on the defensive plays too.

The Stanley cup is definetly the hardest championship to win. Nhl playoffs are a brutal grind. 7 games series a piece, no timeouts, no out of bounds, football on ice 20 minute periods, cannot win with 1 or 2 players full team commitment is totally required. Baseball, not even close, football closest thing basketball not as tough.
