Marvin Lewis has had not one but two 4-win seasons with the Bengals and he went to the playoffs after both of them. Mike Brown knows that Lewis can get the team back to the playoffs. Winning a playoff game has been more problematic, but two of those Lewis playoff games were clearly winnable. The Steelers just got lucky twice. The no playoff wins stat is clearly overrated. People are too easily swayed by hindsight bias. What happened wasn't the only thing that could have happened. The Browns' 0-16 season was similarly fluky, given the many games they lost by 3 points or fewer.

@JOSHUA(opener): After 25 or so years of rooting for the Buffalo Bills, I bailed on them in 2006; the breaking point was their deciding on Dick Jauron, and not Mike Sherman, as head coach. Mike Sherman had a winning record as Green Bay coach, and was 7-1 all-time against Jauron(Chicago Bears)... and yet, Ralph Wilson's GM, Marv Levy(yes, the 4x Super Bowl LOSER), decides on Jauron...largely because of firendships and such. As soon as the Bills decided on Jauron, I said, "I'm out, Buffalo; go kick rocks." At that point, I decided to root for the Philadelphia Eagles; 12 years later... NO REGRETS AT ALL. #FlyEaglesFly #SuperBowl52Champions

It's like arguing about what color the Sun should be. Our opinions are irrelevant. Marvin Lewis should be the coach if Mike Brown wants him to be the coach. Only one opinion matters. That's the nature of the NFL being privately owned. It's not a democracy where the fans get a vote. And because of revenue sharing, the NFL captures all the fan money no matter which team the fans bandwagon to.
@danielmocsny5066

Imagine if the whole world had opinions about what color your carpet should be. It's your house, your choice. Mike Brown knows he sells an addictive product, like the tobacco companies. They don't care how many millions they kill with cancer and heart disease, because they know their addicts will keep coming back and they're hooking younger ones every day.

Daniel Mocsny As fans of football we also get to voice our opinion about it so stfu . I don’t gaf what color he is ...he’s average at best and he’s had a HEAD coaching job at the highest level for 14-15 years 🤦🏾‍♂️. People with your mindset is why we don’t hold people accountable or we hold people to very low standards 🤷🏾‍♂️. It’s time to give another person a shot and change the atmosphere in a organization with “below average “ reputation

Anyone saying "but look at how bad the Bengals were BEFORE Marvin," guess what? That was **14** years ago. Marvin's job was to make the franchise respectable again. He did that. But once that's accomplished, you either take the team to the NEXT level or a true owner/GM fires you and gets the next person. But Mike Brown is not a true owner or GM. Only two current HCs (Reid, Belichick) have HCed more years than him. Belichick's accomplishments speak for themselves and say what you will about Reid (and lord knows I've said plenty) but an 11-13 postseason record with a SB appearance and five conf finals appearances **dwarfs** an 0-7 playoff record. Even more galling: there are only 25 coaches IN THE ENTIRE HISTORY OF THE LEAGUE with more years as HC than him. Repeat: *THE ENTIRE HISTORY OF THE LEAGUE*! 23 of those 25 coaches have at least one NFL/AAFC or NFC or AFC title in their career. And EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM won at least one playoff game in their careers. People loved to give Marty Schottenheimer shit for underachieving. That dude was the Belichick of his era compared to Marvin! And there, in fact, have been several instances where the Bengals underachieved with Marvin as HC. Their playoff losses to the Jets and Chargers come to mind. The 2006 and 2007 teams went 15-17 when both were playoff-capable.

The cool thing is that it makes no difference whatsoever whether we support this brother or not. The NFL likes to prove, over and over, that it doesn't need to care about what anybody else thinks. Mike Brown especially likes to give the world the raised middle finger. And the football addicted fan-tools just keep coming back. Football fans are like the girls who are helplessly attracted to bad boys who treat them like dirt. The bad boys just keep treating them worse to see at what point the girls will change - and they never do.

I use to be a Bengals fan. I remember days when I couldn't WAIT for Sunday to see the Bengals, every week, and now, I barely even watch football anymore. Don't get me wrong, I love football. But to be a citizen in Cincinnati and to see an organization of a city that I grew up in is the biggest heart wrenching and depleted feeling for me to watch football. The Cincinnati Bengals are a fucking joke. Not the players, not Marvin Louis who I think is a nice cat and all, though I thought it was time for a change like 3 or 4 years ago.. the organization of the Cincinnati Bengals are a joke. Mediocre is the only real term that match without getting frustrated as all hell. Cuz what it does even more so is speak about how the CITY of Cincinnati is being produced. Now I know people have tried to fight to really get Cincinnati on the map cuz damn it's so much talent in Cincy. But in the words of SAS this is a disgrace. You get a love hate relationship from cincy cuz even though you may love Cincinnati or grew up here, you wonder why the hell people even wanna come here of all places. Cincinnati is one of the biggest melting pots in all of America you would think that at some point we could do more, and bring in more for our city. I get that you can't please everyone but damnit, it's been long over do for a change, and it speaks to the level of mediocrities the 'ups' in Cincinnati has allowed us to continue to be apart of, and it's so bad to the point that it's hard for me to even enjoy a damn football game, without feeling like most everyone in Cincinnati has felt for our team, damn why can't that be us. Why can't that be our team, why are other cities doing better than us. Does anyone know the answer?? Because the answer is simple. They simply do not care. I'm not saying everyone doesn't care. Some of Cincinnatis head our actually trying, and that's a process. But the NFL is one of if not the biggest stage to do anything in all of America, and for some reason our organization saying nah. And to me that speaks volumes. Sorry for ranting.

Football is a high-profile industry, but it doesn't employ that many people. When cities gain or lose NFL franchises, the economic impact is not that large. (The tax bills for stadiums are a different story.) Besides, NFL franchises are not truly competitive businesses. The NFL rewards failing teams and punishes successful teams with its parity policies of draft order, revenue sharing, salary cap, and free agency. It's not like a normal business. If Kroger doesn't sell groceries as well as a competitor like Meijer, Whole Foods, Remke Markets, etc., then Kroger loses business. In the NFL no team loses business thanks to revenue sharing. Each team gets $250 million every year just for existing. That doesn't cause any problems for white people in general even though most of the grifters and tax swindlers running the League are white. If Marvin happens to be grifting with the best of them it's not like this will cause anybody to become racist who wasn't racist already.

That’s why SAS said “not all black folks” because not all black folks agree with him, but he’s right, if you keep supporting the man when he’s mediocre and can’t win a playoff game because he’s black, then that’s closing the door for other opportunities for another black head coach to take his spot and shine and show that a black man can indeed be a great coach

As someone else has said on this thread, I'll second his/her sentiment(and mark it in *boldface* this time around), and post it as its own paragraph: *The NFL(in general... and the Cincinnati Bengals organization, in this specific case) has become ridiculous- milk the fans to the maximum by making them finance everything- and then give them nothing in the end (no say and no satisfaction).* In any other area of business, *SATISFACTION GUARANTEED* is the rule. Whenever you purchase anything at a store... be it a can of paint, or some food product, or some clothing, or whagtever else... a lot of these items are marked with those words... "SATISFACTION GUARANTEED." If the product or service you buy isn't measuring up to your expectations, the provider is supposed to either make it right, or refund your money. What would be nice is to see sports tickets come with SATISFACTION GUARANTEED as part of the verbeage. If your hometown team isn't giving a competitive effort on that particular day or evening, then you go to the ticket booth and get your money back; no questions asked. If they have to give your money back with other defective products, why not with a defectively-performing sports team? It's a business transaction involving customer and purveyor, like any other transaction, is it not? Same principle.

I say get rid of both of them , Lewis and Brown , but keep our Bengals right here where they belong. Get somebody in here that's hungry , no no no , starving for some wins and the playoffs , and take us back to the Super Bowl...... WHO DEY !!!!!!!!!

I don't know if Mike Brown's decision was motivated by race or not, but objectively Marvin Lewis has not done the job and unfortunately should not have been renewed for another two years. And I like him! But the goal is to win the Super Bowl and Lewis has not been able to win in the postseason notwithstanding the talent level on the Bengals' team. Go and give someone else a shot.

outside his 7 post seasons with the 0-7 record, 4 of them at home, look at the records he's posted during the 8 non post seasons. theres 4-12s, 6-10s, 7-9s. any other franchise would have fired a coach after 2 of those.

But that's the nature of privately owned businesses. They have wide leeway to behave individually. For example, the Packers do a lot of things differently than all other franchises especially with their ownership structure. In any case, it would be nice if at least one of the Marvin Lewis critics would provide statistical evidence to support the firing of coaches. Hint: best to avoid analyzing the track record of the Browns.

@Daniel: Even in "privately run" busineses, they all have this rule to adhere to... *SATISFACTION GUARANTEED.* In other words, if they want their customers to support them, then it BEHOOVES them( viz: it makes it *their obligation* ) to put forth a satisfactory-OR-BETTER product that the people can be proud of.
@StukInBuf
@StukInBuf 6 жыл бұрын
@Gerardo(open): This reminds me of the Buffalo Bills about a decade ago. After three seasons of Dick Jauron coaching, and each season ending with a 7-9 record, did Ralph Wilson decide it was time for him to go? Come back with me to the early part of the 2008 campaign... In early October, the Bills are 5-1, 1st in the AFC East, and are just about to begin a crucial set of three straight AFC East games; before they even begin that stretch of games, it gets announced that Ralphy is planning to give Jauron a contract extension. Shortly after that announcement, the Bills begin that divisional set at Miami... they BLOW a 16-7 lead in the 2nd Half, and end up losing by a 25-16 final score! They proceed to lose to the Jets(23-17), and then to the Pats(20-10), with another loss to Cleveland, thus putting them at 5-5. Even though they break that streak with a big win at Kansas City, they eventually fall apart, losing ALL their Divisional games, and end up at 7-9! With all the above being considered, in any soundly-run-and-overseen football franchise, such a shoddy showing would result in... *a) said offer being withdrawn,* and *B) SAID COACH BEING FIRED THE MORNING AFTER THE SEASON FINALE.* Now, did Ralphy decide, based on facts and results, to withdraw his offer and send Dickie packing the very next day? *HELL, NO!!* He KEPT his sorry ass! He reasoned, "We need to maintain continuity." I said, *" What the FUCK?!?!?!"* Now, before all this happened, I abandoned ship on the Bills in 2006; their decision to hire Jauron(perennial flop) as coach, as opposed to Mike Sherman(perpetual winner who often guided his team to playoff wins), was the trigger point for me. I essentially said, "If that's who you believe should coach this team, then GFY; I'm done with you!" At that point, I decided to pledge my allegiance to the Philadelphia Eagles; twelve years later... *HOW SO GLAD I AM!!!!!* The only reason I got hot on this is... I'm a citizen of the Buffalo/WNY community, and I care a lot about how my community is represented on the professional sports stage. If the powers-that-be are going to put forth a slipshod product onto the stage, and expect us to give unconditional support regardless, then that's wrong on their part. A well-known truckmaker advertises their products with this motto: *WE ARE PROFESSIONAL GRADE.* If the team owners want their fanbases in their corner, then they need to put forth a professional-caliber product of which the people can be proud. The NFL is supposed to be a professional league... in other words, *crème de la crème!* You can't put forth a low-caliber product on the NFL stage, and expect it to even pass Pop Warner standard. Eventually, the fans will figure it out, the fanbase will figure it out, and then you'll be left high and dry. Incidentally, though... Jauron would be fired midway into the 2009 season... after a 3-6 record... *ROUGHLY 770 DAYS LATE!!!!* The time for his firing was the morning after the 2007 Monday Night Meltdown against Dallas! This past season, the first for Sean McDermott as coach, Buffalo made the playoffs for the first time since 1999; they lost by a 10-3 score, but put forth more than enough effort to have a chance. Needless to say, however... for me, the season ended on a very high note... with the Philadelphia Eagles winning! #FlyEaglesFly

The problem isn't coaching. Its management. A real NFL team becomes ingrained into the community. When ownership shows a commitment to winning then the fans respond. Go to Green bay, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, even Cleveland and the difference is incredible. Bengals fans are the least enthusiastic about their team because there is no real commitment by ownership to win or even stay within that community. it doesn't matter who the coach is Mike Brown ultimately has full control. With that being said I wanted them to get rid of the entire coaching staff. Since he will never do that the next best thing is to hang on to Marvin Lewis. Marvin Lewis is the only person who at least has some clout into at least steer Mike Brown in making a sound decision. If he had fired Marvin then he would have just hired another flunky like David Shula and it would be an awful 5 years like we had under Shula. I am a Bengal fan because i was born into it but i only take my commitment so far. I never buy tickets or merchandise because i am not going to give mike Brown any money. He doesn't deserve it.

I was born and raised in Cincinnati , and I've been a Bengals fan ever since. I'm tired of all the excuses made for our team , from our team. I want some wins under our belt , because it's not like we don't have good talented players here , but I'll tell u what the problem is . It's the ownership , and how our team is ran period. TJ Houshmandzadeh spoke out on how our players are managed , and how they are treated , and they are treat very bad , and they're not managed well at all. For heaven sakes , they hardly even supply our players will Gatorade , and players out drinking the night before the game . They are just mismanaged all around , and it begins with the owner of this team. I don't want the Bengals to ever leave Cincinnati , and please don't get me wrong , but we need a new owner . Leave the Bengals here , but get someone in here who wants to be a contender , and someone who respects our players. If Mr. Brown don't respect the players of our team , he sure as hell don't care about this city , or the fans that keeps this team going. Get Brown's dumb loser ass out of here period. Rather than that , it's WHO DEY for life . BENGALS NATION. We want Brown out of the jungle . Us fans will welcome a new owner with open arms. Just keep "OUR BENGALS" here in Cincinnati. WHO DEY !!!!!!!

I am TOTALLY on board with everything you stated my friend. Even though I am not a Bengals fan and as much pro football I have watched all of my life, it just amazes me how Mike Brown and the family of dimwits continually gives the finger to the fans, the city of Cincinnati, the businesses and the like. It has been way too long for this to fester to this point of doing you guys like this. It is absolutely disgusting on ALL levels. And yes...the team should definitely stay in the city should a billionaire, maybe a trillionaire, outright buys the team and to put SERIOUSLY football minded individuals to make the team better, restoring Who Dey nation to what it once was, fan attendance would skyrocket, maybe attracting big name free agents, etc. I have never in my life has ever seen this much futility raked all over an organization like...the Bengals. I mean this is just absolutely disgusting and EXTREMELY toxic at a level that just makes you shake your head in shame; that's just how I see it from a distance. Someone, SOMEONE! should do something here for heavens sake.

Marvin Lewis is garbage but to say he set black folks back is just wrong. He should not be the coach of the Bengals anymore. That's not to be argued with. Why does everybody assume normal people rules apply to Mike Brown? You can't put yourself in Brown's position and try to explain his behavior in terms of what would make you behave similarly. It's like trying to understand why some people listen to country music. Some things have no explanation.
