Long comment but worth the read. The match is one of the greatest things to ever happen for golf. Because it brings in a lot of hype and a TON of new eyes to the sport. That otherwise aren’t interested in golf. Growing up I never played golf, so I couldn’t watch it on TV. I thought it was boring because I had never played and didn’t understand how hard and competitive it is. For my 21 birthday. I was taken to play at the best course in San Antonio. Started at the driving range at like 6am and after my first swing. I was completely hooked. I lost more balls than I could count that day but it was so much fun and because of how competitive I am. I both loved and hated playing. I played baseball my entire life so I had to relearn everything I knew about grip and swinging. I could never swing as hard as I could off the tee because it would slice or hook. If I swung as hard as I could, the ball would fly an incredibly far but never straight. So I learned how to stand in different positions to account for a splice or hook if I want to swing full throttle. But I found out pretty quick that my mid to short game was pretty good and my putting was really solid. So I wouldn’t swing super hard off the Tee and then make up for it later on down the course. All that said I wasn’t a great golfer. But going out with a group of friends to golf, get drunk and take the carts for a joy ride. I did pretty well. Even though we were playing once or twice a week. I never took it serious. But I fell in love with it. Then… I was promoted and my job revolved around wining and dining with high level executives. Who played all the time and getting absolutely STOMPED by men in their 60-70’s. It pissed me off. Because I’m extremely competitive and hate losing. So I hired an extremely talented golf pro in his 50’s as my instructor. We worked together for three years and I would wake up at 4:30 in the morning five days a week start at the driving range and then a full 18 holes. Before having to change and go to work and became a pretty decent golfer. My golf pro instructor was my caddie and we actually won several tournaments and landed in the top 3-5 more times than I could count. My instructor was one of the sweetest, yet fierce and ferocious men I have ever met and sadly he passed away recently. He always said I had a lot of potential and started signing me up for tournaments with really talented players. Who were trying to make it the lower level tours to push me and I actually did pretty well. I won five tournaments and felt like I was on the rise and he was trying to explain and teach me how I could make a solid living if I fully committed Playing those tournaments and become a gold pro at a large course, like he was. Clearly, I never thought I would make it as far as I did and never thought that I had a shot of ever getting to the PGA or the lower level tours. But thought golf would become my full time career in a few years. But just as I started believing in myself. I became paralyzed and my golf dreams were shattered. Now that I told my life story. The real point is that stuff like this “the match” brings in a ton of viewers that would never become even remotely close to interested in watching this beautiful, hard, frustrating, competitive and extremely fun game! I miss it and I miss my instructor, caddie, mentor and father figure! RIP Justin Cooper. You may be gone but you’ll never be forgotten!
