The show that started it all. Before Richard became the Gadget Man and then Travel Man, Stephen Fry was the man in charge. Made way back in 2012 for Channel 4, and uploaded onto the Travel Man channel for the first time. Some of the tech might be a bit dated but it's still an enjoyable watch!

Don't get me wrong, Richard is a gift to us mere mortals, but Stephen Fry has earned a special place in my heart, put him in front of a camera, I'll watch. XD

As strange as rewatching an old episode, with Stephen instead of Richard, and with extremely outdated gadgets (and ideas of what's a good gadget) is, seeing Stephen with a beard is far more abstract to me!

If you had asked me "hey who do you think hosted Gadget Man before Richard Ayoade?" before I saw this, I would probably have named 100 British celebrities before Stephen. Awesome!

The best part of these gadget shows? It is, without question, watching them a few years from now and realizing how fortunate we are to have all of these insanely cheap, problem-solving tools at our fingertips. Need an example? Ok. A few brief years ago, Richard Ayoade was blown away by the latest tech that allowed him to … wait for it… drop his phone into a glass of water. Even a decade ago, that type of solution was only available to the super wealthy. These days, we all take it for granted and don’t give it another thought. Human progress is rarely as fast as we would like. But if you don’t take a moment to reflect on the amazing strides being made in so many facets of human existence, you are kinda missing out on all of the fun. Hedonic adaptation is a cruel mistress.

Wow, this one was hard to watch in 2021. One gadget promised as quite durable was destroyed in seconds, the result of a self build amphibious car was fun to look at, but neither practical on the road nor on water (there are so many cool builds out there from the last 60 years of those attempts...) and the little electric car we see by the dozen as pizza delivery cars since 2012 in many major cities, was presented as THE new unbelievable thing on our roads. So this is how it feels to come visit from the future? 🤔 Feels odd

Seems like the electric scooter (albeit now with two instead of three) is the only one that's taken off. But I do question why the film goggles haven't joined in - I'd certainly buy a pair for a long train or car journey!

The hilarious incredulous nature of "it can be driven by 16-year-olds." I grew up in Idaho, where a normal driving license happens at 15.
