The shot that typifies Hendry's game the most is the first red, last frame of the 1997 Charity Challenge against O'Sullivan.. It's an all or nothing shot in the decider. If he misses, he loses the match. But no one had balls like Hendry, and he makes the pot, and follows it up with a maximum.

Also in addition I would love to see an hour long compilation of these 😅 always was a hendry fan for some reason, though used to live just round the corner from Ronnie. Saw a massive banner outside his house when he won his first world title saying “congrats Ronnie!” Alongside his Mercedes with the 147 number plate. Bet that is worth a few quid.

Hendry was dominant in what was by & large a relative "Talent Vacuum" Davis, White etc past their best. Ronnie at a time of self implosion & the other Class of '92 meant his time to eclipse Hendry took longer. But the fact that at 48 he's still the BEST with Judd Robertson etc makes him the GOAT. I don't think anyone will ever play the Game with more Style & Panache than ROS

The Stephen Hendry shot with the rest on the blue at the Masters I think was more significant to Ronnie's 147. The match at that point was on the ballence compared to Ronnie only making a maximum. Pluss Stephen Hendry was playing the shot with the rest, we all know how good Ronnie is with his left hand. So I think that point should have gone to Stephen Hendry.
@sharpvidtube

I agree. Also had the pressure of playing it with Steve Davis in his seat watching. People not old enough won't know how difficult it was to overcome the man that totally dominated the 80s. Many players before Hendry didn't have the cahoonas under that pressure. It took Hendry a long time to get the better of Steve Davis, had he missed this shot, it might not of happened, making this one of the biggest pressure shots in the history of snooker.

im a Scotsman and Hendry being the greatest ever world champion is an amazing thing but Ronnie is from another planet in my opinion, despite the fact he's been more inconsistent, watching Ronnie play snooker is like watching Messi or Ronaldo play football, its monstrous stuff. I remember Ronnie making a 147 in the final frame of a tournament final once, can't remember if it was the welsh or northern ireland open, but the cheek of him to continue playing for the maxi instead of sealing the silverware. He wants to entertain no matter the stage, no matter the pressure, he's a show off, and snooker has needed it since Alex Higgins retired. Judd is another one who tries to entertain and does it brilliantly but you wouldn't see Judd showing off in the final frame of a tournament like that.

A great video as usual... its hard to say who's the best player of all time, but maybe the most infuential player of all time has to be Hendry. He changed the way the game was played, and brought shots like splitting the pack from the blue into club players everyday shots. I remember in the early 90's local coaches honing in on how ruthless Stephen was, his shots weren't extravigant, which made regular club players feel playing the game like Hendry more achievable than say Jimmy White...... Ronnie is a pleasure to watch, but with his natural ability and hard work its not achievably possible for a club player to aspire, as he plays like he comes from a different planet!

I feel like the 'greatest' is such a subjective term that it really makes it a difficult argument, so I tend to break it down like this: Ronnie is the most naturally talented player the game has ever seen, but Hendry dominated his era, smashed every record of his day, and actually changed the sport in meaningful ways and paved the way for players like ROS and Selby Both of these could be arguments for the 'greatest' players depending on what you place more value on I think you have to break it down into two categories, and neither can truly be considered the best. Who is the most talented? ROS. Who is the harder worker and has done more for the sport? Hendry.

There’s a big difference between “able to play the most difficult shot” and “the greatest ever”. What separates Stephen from everyone else is his mental toughness, his total psychological domination over his opponents and his almost tedious consistency, which is true of all great sportsmen. Ronnie has only managed these things for short periods in his career, despite being arguably the better player. I think you nailed it when you said that Stephen rarely needed to play these shots in his prime, once he was in the balls the break was just over, full stop. If you are going to judge greatest ever on shot making or the ability to play shots that no one else could, then Jimmy would be better than both these players. Ronnie couldn’t recreate the masse shot on the TV and Jimmy does at his first attempt. He played those shots because of his inconsistency though. I think his rest shot in the 147 may be the best pressure shot I’ve ever seen, it’s hard to identify with the significance of that at the time with it being so long since a Crucible 147.

I don’t know how you can say Ronnie’s deep screw for a 147 is better than Hendry’s clearance to force a decider in the UK Championship of 1990 against Steve Davis which Hendry would win. Hendry’s shot on that circumstance was more important as the UK Championship is a top three tournament in snooker and started his dominance. Hendry all the way for me on that particular shot comparison.

The part when you said that Hendry's cue ball control is so good he doesn't need to play such amazing shots to get back in position. It says it right there. In any case just because one person plays cool shots and we'll thought out ones compared to some who doesn't have to doesn't mean they are better. I know it's only one person's view. But let not forget just how good Steven Hendry was. Ronnie hasn't won five world titles back to back. Year after year. Because people and people new to snooker only now or recently seen the two players. Yes Ronnie is a great player , but to say he's better than Stephen Hendry i think is wrong.

Ronnie's the best. Ambidextrous, tougher talent pool in his era, more centuries, more 147s, more trophies, and greater longevity, winning the world in 2001 and 2020. Hendry is a legend, but Ronnie's better. When Ron wins his 7th world, the debate will officially be over. Hendry's greatest skill was his bottle and consistency. His positional play, I think, was better than Ron, but Ron's potting and creativity is better.

Yep. Also, Ronnie has suffered with depression throughout his career, this can only have contributed to down periods and losses over the years. If he can win world titles with 20 years in between I would say that had he not been burdened with depression he could have won 10 World titles by now, easily, maybe more. Have to say though, hendrys positional play will never be bettered.

Shot one: Hendry Shot two: O'Sullivan Shot 3: Hendry (it's incredibly close but purely because it was in a final and he was one frame away from losing I'd give it to Hendry , although O'Sullivan was playing left handed and there is big pressure on a maximum break also) Shot 4: O'Sullivan Shot 5: Hendry ( it's very close but again because it's in a final and he was one frame away from losing I'd give it to Hendry, although O'Sullivan was 10-6 behind so there was pressure to get it) Shot 6: O' Sullivan

Interesting first comment, I am to all intents and purposes an amateur in terms of my actual play but I’ve recently got a new tip and found the same struggle with spin. How long would you say it takes to break it in?

I would go Hendry coz his blue v Davis was a murder shot and loses match!!! Same with the brown v Jimmy...any misses and match gone!!! Plus Hendry had more bottle and harder mentally than Ronnie, but Ron is more talented....so its close but Hendry for me Great match up boss and fab choices 👏

O'Sulivan he has that wow rockstar vibe that popularlise the game and grow it. Considering that he is not a robot, but has most max breaks ever and like almost as many Crusibles. He is the winner. He is a bit like Fisher in chess. Kind of greatest ever 7/8 wins. But not the longest carear, but massivly popularise the game. But I do agree a great worrior dont even have to fight. But I think if you had to remove one from history who would it be? You dont want to get rid of Ronnie.

In any sport, it’s impossible to compare different eras . If Stephen had of started with Higgins and Williams with Ronnie , his game would have been even more advanced than it was . Same with Davis etc.

Ronnie O'Sullivan and Stephen Hendry are legends but I still choose Judd Trump because he's the only current cueist to enjoy playing both traditional (snooker) and modern (pool); Pitas, Sabah, Malaysia! 😇

Great video! I’d also put John Higgins in contention for greatest ever, but it’s a really debatable argument about who is the best ever. I’d personally go for John Higgins but it’s hard to call. Keep up the great work!

John Higgins never retained the world championship, so I wouldn't put him close to these two.

@@sharpvidtube I certainly agree that Higgins was probably the biggest underachiever in snooker history in terms of trophies, but that doesn’t subtract from his ability. If you wanted to build the most complete player, you’d pick John Higgins.

@@sharpvidtube he did win 3 in 5 years tbf not many can say they've achieved that I'd probably have him 3rd or even 4th he and davis to me compete close for that.

Hendry played in an era of the more classical kind of playing. The more adventurous style, in my humble opinion did start during Hendry's time, but players like Higgins and White were few and far between. O'Sullivan is the best of the current adventurous players, but these days there are many more of this type of player.

Ronnie is the goat for quite some time now. I can recall at least a dozen of Ronnie's shots that were memorable. Ronnie is also the ultimate break builder with more than a thousand centuries. And to finish Ronnie has more triple crowns and altogether more trophies than hendry. End of a debate that never was in the first place.

The reason I got into pool is from watching Ronnie. I'd see his clips pop up thx to a FB algorithm then searched him on KZbin to find that American Hustler series. Then all the 90s Mosconi runs where he destroyed basically all my American heroes. The Rocket is top 5 maybe even top 3 cue sportsmen of all time IMO

I think Ronnie is the most talented player to ever play snooker. But Ronnie has never been dominant at any point of his career so I believe that Stephen Hendry is the greatest of all time.
