I connect w/ Ty in that when I 'allowed' my subconscious to do a lot of the heavy lifting for me when I was kid. I'm blessed/cursed w/ a brain that I jokingly say, "won't shut off", constantly thinking, observing, 'talking' to me etc., not in the split personality sense, but in the sense that It feels like it's always 'on'. This was useful when I was a kid. When we would have some kind of big project or paper to do, I was a procrastinator, so would often wait until the day before it was due. Before bed, I would read what the assignment was, go to sleep, wake up a couple hours earlier than normal, then get on my typewriter and pump it out. I'd let my subconscious do the work for me, all I had to do is output it. My friends knew this was my process so would get really Po'd when they'd spend a week at the library to do research for theirs while I waited 'til the night before and still get a good grade. I have a suspicion being a voracious reader when I was younger helped exercise my subconscious to be so productive w/o my having to put much conscious effort into it....

I will NEVER tire of hearing about how people learn and work their craft, whether it's the nuts and bolts of writing or the intricacies of make-up and costuming. Great episode. You guys are wonderful.

Such a great episode! An incredible insight into the methods of two successful, working writers. There's zero pretension here, and an incredible amount of light shed on the imperfect processes of two writers I love and appreciate.

You guys! Listening to experts on the craft of storytelling (be it acting or writing) is NEVER boring. It is informative, interesting, and helpful in the extreme. Please never stop doing it. I am quite convinced that all eight of your listeners feel as I do about this; keep it up!

"The sense of having a cup of coffee with someone who really dedicated to the craft" EUREKA!!! Thanks, Daniel! That perfectly sums up how I feel about watching TATG every week! Doesn't even matter what they are covering: Expanse or non Expanse alike: I ALWAYS feel as if I'm sitting with friends who just happen to like the same things I like. And, another bonus is that I get so much background information about Film Making at large. WIN!

I'm not a native speaker, but talking about writing characters that aren't close to you in spirit: Stephen King wrote book series about a Clint Eastwood person, traveling in company of a young kid, a heroin junkie, a some kind of crazy mixture of dog/parrot/racoon animal, and of all the options - a disabled young adult black woman. I don't know if they're realistic enough, but I can still relate. The author is totally out of this world. He thinks on a different plane.

I'd been practicing screenwriting for the better part of 20 years since I love movies so much, but if you don't have an in into that industry it's kind of pointless so my love of the Expanse carried over into my love of the books so I decided to write my own, just so I'd have something I can leave behind after I'm gone.

This was such a good episode. Like Ty, I get most of my ideas, and solutions to plot issues, when I'm doing other stuff than actually sitting writing, and I always make room to allow the story to sit and develop in the back of my mind. So much of what both Ty and Daniel were saying in this discussionchimed with me, and Wes's viewpoint - drawing parallels from the acting profession - really added perspective. Thank you so much.

Really good conversation between two great writers and a great actor. I think writing is very similar to acting. When you write, you are basically improv acting in your head. At least that's how I approach it.
