Although this book is technically skippable, to me it provides a refreshing palate cleanser between the intense personal drama of Wizard and Glass and the genre-bending metafiction of the last three books. I also think it contains some of King's most elegant prose. It's storytelling for the sake of storytelling rather than to advance a plot. Whether or not that sort of thing belongs in the middle of an epic series is up to the reader to decide, but I for one enjoy it immensely.

I love when the creatures who helped Tim yelled “Hile!” How could Roland talk about the Dogen but then not be cognizant of it when they encounter it in book V?
@johnb24222 жыл бұрын
well...I always give a lot of leeway with stories within stories because no way is Roland speaking the amount of detail we're reading, let alone dialogue or specifics. So when we are with Tim, I think we are really with Tim how it actually happened and the story Roland told Bill is not as detailed or specific.

I love the fact that you are so enthusiastic about The DarkTower. I’ve read all the books, but not WTTK. If I’m going to reread DT, where should I read WTTK? After book 4, or after book 7? And also, if I wanted to do a major Dark Tower deep dive where I read the whole series, plus other related books like It or The Stand, what order do you think I should read them in? This video is six years old. I hope you’re doing well.

I would read it after book VII. Definitely don't skip it. It's a wonderful novel.

I like your videos about Stephen king books. I’ve been watching your reviews for years. I have to respectfully disagree with you about this book being skippable and ultimately forgettable. I first read this gem back in 2014/15 and have since read it three more times. I totally love this book. Although short, it is packed with a rich and interesting story. I personally don’t get tired of these Tower characters and as far as I’m concerned Sai King can write whatever he chooses regarding this thread. Big ups

Jamie DeCurry has been my favorite character of the saga, even tho we know not much about him. I always liked and felt indentified with his character

Does he have stage time outside of wind through the keyhole? he and his father are mentioned a few times throughout the series but we never actually meet him do we?
@kvdngz76524 жыл бұрын
@@davidb3839 Jamie appears a lot in the comics, tho his personality is slighty changed. He is no longer that only-speak-when-necessary guy, he is rather similar with Cuthbert. His father also appears in the comics a few times

Thanks for the review. I am on my first Dark Tower read through and I am read this right after Wizard and Glass. I was confused about Roland’s mother’s letter. Is the origin of the letter explained in later books? The “I forgive you letter” was the best part of this book, but is there an explanation for his mother knowing the future about her death? Also, I totally agreed on the rehash issue. SK is asking a lot for readers to sit through two books in a row with flashback stories (and stories within flashbacks). I liked it because I like Roland so much, but the need for progress is killing me. In a sense, I almost wonder if this slow down is intentional. Perhaps SK has slowed the pace and progress to the tower to get readers longing for the tower (like the ka-yet).
@johnr7972 жыл бұрын
It was intentional. There were decades between W&G and Wolves

I agree on the 'ssdd' as Wizard and Glass. On my read through (my first time, though definitely not my last) I read about halfway through this one, then gave up and moved on to Wolves of the Calla. When I was finished with the series I came back to this one. The best thing is that it brings back Eddie Jake and Oy

I say this book could have been part of a great off-shoot miniseries to the Dark Tower. Something that does not have Roland as the protagonist, but rather another gunslinger who is seeing the effects of the breakdown of the levels of reality but has not quite connected the dots.

I agree with your review. I thought it was okay but I don’t think it really adds anything new to the overall story and it was pretty straightforward without anything unexpected happening. I think it kind of tarnishes the series, which is unfortunate. Out of the whole series my favorites are the first two books.

Love your reviews but disagree on this also, its a nice addition to the series and shows us more of Rolands character. Really enjoyed the story about young Tim as well and was curious about certain parts of it, maybe I liked it more as I skipped it in my reading of books 1-7 and read it after. Would've preferred a story with Cuthbert and Alain though

Eh...I liked the book. I view it more as a fairytale set in the DARK TOWER Universe rather than a continuation novel. I think it's an improvement on the structure used in WIZARD IN GLASS...that is my least favorite DT novel (and yes, I know I'm in the minority on that). For me, it's more like The Tales of Beedle the Bard than any of the Harry Potter novels proper...and that's a good thing.

Very interesting. I've just finished Winds ( although after Wizards book 4, going back in time, I didn't fancy going back again! ) and put the massively over rated Wizards book 4 love story behind me ( I'm amazed it rates so high to many ) I really enjoyed winds for what it was. It surprised me. Loved the art too. Out of the first 5 I've read here's my order of best to worst. 1. The drawing of the three ( incredible ) 2. The Gunslinger ( bleak and brilliant ) 3. Winds ( Beautiful prose ) 4. The waste lands ( Good ) 5. Wizards....( Barely OK )

The parts that most confused me were Maerlyn/Merlin actually doing right by the kid, and no one picking up that Covenant Man was Flagg. Now, the first has been explained to me as Merlin being a force of chaos who simply returned a favor, likely so as to not owe the kid. But, assuming that the separate narratives in-story remotely resembled the stories we read, Covenant Man's approach, speech and described mannerisms almost mark him off as Flagg. I know Roland's been described as unimaginative, but one of his ka-tet not asking if that could have been their nemesis threw me off. Again, I'm assuming that Roland, telling these stories as passed down, might not have included these obvious cues, but then maybe King should have started and ended each narrative with the actual prose used for that relative era. Eddie at least should have said 'Ya Know, Ole' Covenant talked real familiar...'.

Plot hole. How is the man in the dark appearing in a story? At the time, he was Martin and wasn’t known as flag or the man in black.
@megadev90994 жыл бұрын
Not a plot hole at all. The story of Tim and the Covenant Man takes place many years before Roland is even born. Flagg wasn't Marten at that time. And he has ways of getting around to different times and places.

I would have to disagree with you here. I dont consider this a Tower book other than it involves Roland. But it really feels like a Niel Gaiman fantasy or Douglas Adams sci fi. Very light and whimsical. I remember the tiger, the dragon, the mud/swamp people and the skin man very well. I thought it was a fresh attempt at a stale fart.
