Highlights from the Men's Marathon during the London 2012 Olympic Games on 12 August 2012.
Since 1896, athletics has been on the programme of each edition of the Games of the Olympiad. Its presence on the Games programme has allowed its popularity to increase across the world. This popularity was also strengthened by the creation of the IAAF in 1912. Women's events appeared for the first time at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam, while the men's programme was standardised as of the 1932 Games in Los Angeles. Although at the beginning women were authorised to participate in only some events, today their programme is almost identical to that of the men.

Stephen Kiprotich...totally adorable!!! Uganda deserves a champion like this. To be so vibrant and positive after running 26 miles in the heat is an Olympic accomplishment in itself. This is truly inspiring.

I never thought that the average speed they run is around 20km/h man now I respect them much much more because sustaining this speed is something amazing. For example me, I can only run at 20km/h on a treadmill for around 5 minutes and these guys run for 2 hours

It seems strange, but its actually a pretty fair argument. I remember when watching the event, the commentators talked about how Kenyans arent really that happy about training in the heat, so they would always train in the morning and evening to avoid the heat, plus most of them are in altitude, so its not as hot. Although, im still not sure about the accuracy of that statement, but heat was the reason for both the bad marathon for makau in london, and mutai in boston that year.

Is this something non-achievable to run for 5 minutes at this speed? As you said, running for 20km/hr for 2 hours is amazing and this is what requires some serious athletic background. So running for 5 minutes is a triffle and can be achieved by most amateurs. Unless anaerobic endurance is never worked out.
@astroboomboy
@astroboomboy 11 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but you said 20km/h for five minutes, that's very easy, almost every person I run with manages that, and my 12km/h is on longer runs (10k or more). And I'm not in good shape nowadays, at school I would run above 20km/h on the 3k competitions, which is around a 10 minute run.
@astroboomboy
@astroboomboy 11 жыл бұрын
20km/hr for 5 minutes isn't very hard, you don't need a serious athletic background. I run 12 km/hr on average on my longer runs (around 10 k runs), and I'm not in my best shape at the moment. These runners though are natural runners, and few people on the planet can run like that!
