I forgot to add thank you for being nice but I am getting tired hearing all these debate and skeptic still not satisfied. If they tried this with islam they wont gett far. Skeptic should be thankful at least there is an intelligent conversation going on!!! I think all this debate is useless been going on for centuries. The fact of the matter is that the world does not want to submit to a christian God. Cause they have radical different ideas. So evolution has been made to try and bury him. Evolution was never design to give alternatives. Just like lgbt was design to oppose the bible. The world wants to kill God that is a fact. Just like in the bible pharoah still wanted to keep Gods people as slaves even after the miracles were shown. If you really want answer you have to look to the bible and follow His commands. Also you have to asked why do you keep bringing on people like meyer has it helped you at all if not then your heart is just not interested. And what your lookking for you will not find. The phrases at jesus ask for a sign that jesus was who he said he was. But the sign were in the miracles but it was an excuse cause deep down they wanted him out of the way. The apostle paul persecuted the jews he was like a high priest. And jesus change his heart!! So that is what you need to look at if your serious of finding answers. Or follow the news on israel that it still a nation there will be no peace till the anti christ sets it up. All the current leaders have failed. This might take years to unfold but it's one way to show the bible is not for granny old ladies. Or being accuse that we all just religious!!!!

Whenever I want to get as full an understanding of a particular paradigm in science, philosophy or whatever, I ALWAYS try to find the best informed, most thoughtful person on the “other” side. I did that for evolution by reading Meyer’s “Darwin’s Doubt” and though I’m very doubtful (so to speak) about his conclusion that there is an ‘intelligent designer’, I’m certain I was left better informed than if I had only read books written by the purveyors of the mainstream paradigm. Other doubters about the ms paradigm for evolution that I would love to hear from on this podcast are David Gelertner and Stuart Kauffman (if he’s still active).

@Dr Brian Keating Thank you for having Stephen Meyer on to discuss this. As a laymen and supporter of Dr. Meyer it is clear the scientific community's bias and hostility toward this topic, which I personally think will not work out well for them in the long run. I've seen several agnostic and even atheistic friends of mine begin to have some serious doubts about the current state of affairs and claims of naturalism once a person convinces them to question a few assumptions. To the point about Sean Carroll's, what is the purpose of "X". I hear this objection all the time to intelligent design and it seems very weak but continues to be used as if it a strong argument against design. Poor design is an argument for no design. It also assumes we have all the knowledge to adequately explain a Creator's reasons for every single phenomenon. Intelligent Design doesn't even claim to offer any such fully featured explanation and neither does any materialistic explication. So why raise the point? The argument sounds more like a "You can't explain the purpose of 'X' therefore materialism", or in other words a materialism of the gaps. Like most gap argument it leaves the position vulnerable where if your opponent does ever come up with an explanation, your position is now doubly weak because not only are you wrong, but you haven't take the time to adequately prepare a true counter to their claims. In other conversations Dr. Meyer points this out with materialistic claims that the genome's junk DNA had no purpose or did not seem to have a purpose. Later to discover it did. And while the person raising this argument is objecting to intelligent design not being able to explain the purpose of galaxy X or the purpose of sub atomic effect Z, their own position still lacks an explanation for the very mind they are using to raise the objection. Or even more important what is the purpose of humans? What is the purpose of our minds? I think most people would be more interested in the later question. The atheist Thomas Nagel who wrote "Mind and Cosmos: Why the Materialist Neo-Darwinian Conception of Nature is Almost Certainly False" concurs in that at the end of all the materialistic explanations and proposals, there has to be an sufficient and satisfactory account for the very mind and information used to come up with the theory in the first place. I think Carroll's question of purpose is more reasonably asked in a different context of why mind rather than no mind, but then you get into philosophical and religious discussions outside the framing of this conversation but still very relevant and much more fun. Thank you for being willing to engage Dr. Meyer in this kind of discussion rather than dismissing and attacking him. It is a credit to your own character. Have a great day!

It is almost adorable how many people think that some supernatural God, in whatever form (ID, creationism, “intelligent” entity, etc..) is actually competing with any real naturalistic explanation for the diversity or the origin of life or literally anything in nature, for that matter. As if something that does not even quality as real, is capable of providing an explanation. Given the demonstrable correlation with reality, the concept of the supernatural, let alone some specific deity, is if anything, in competition with unicorns and goblins for its sheer existence.

Intent and Purpose come only from a Designing Mind. Design is not discerned just from something looking pretty or appearing intricate or being complex. It is discerned from a purposeful arrangement of elements and purpose is detected by the performance of a function. Higher orders of design can be distinguished by how functions mesh with the performance of other functions in the same environment or - denoting an even higher level of design - in timed concert with other functions to achieve an even greater objective. Aback of all design is intent because design requires foresight. Intent and Purpose come only from a Designing Mind.

Modern Physics not only revolutionized the concept of causality, it also revolutionized the concept of existence. To be more specific, casualty doesn't mean something has to happen after the cause. It means if two events were time-like separated, it stays that way forever. Not to mention time and space are local concept. To extrapolate to the beginning of the universe, well, I would say it's not that solid even from physics perspective. Also, we know that classical existence means minimizing tree level action, it doesn't prevent any other alternatives in allowed physical state. Not only our observation doesn't mean we are in an exclusive reality, but also means that the things could have been existed decayed away. Unless one argue, it decays because it's by design?

First, observation that it's composed of parts, i.e., more than one thing, physical or abstract, is involved. Second, perception from experience that the arrangement is not random. Designed things give the clear impression of having a purpose. Consider: If an arrangement of parts is 1) perceptible by a reasonable person as having a purpose and 2) can be used for the perceived purpose Then its purpose was correctly perceived and it was designed by an intelligent mind. This is why I say the universe was verifiably designed. This impression of having been designed can be thought of as a universal property, transcending cultural context, subject matter expertise and philosophical predisposition.

My favorite takeaway, was that there is something known as the Wick Rotation used to solve math problems! Got me thinking of something I heard a professor once say, that as you progress in mathematics, there are a few distinct classes that indicate whether or not your brain is physically structured to proceed.. and that you can't study your way past them! Also, would have loved to heard more about Stephen's thoughts on what happens after death.. specifically, the idea of oneness. Nearly all religions teach that we are all one, temporarily a separate drop of water while here on earth, but return to the ocean of consciousness when we die.. however, this seems to go against what we see with ghosts, NDE, and reincarnation. The evidence in all those cases suggest that your unique consciousness and personality persist after death.. so how can there still be an individual experience? BTW, any plans to interview Bernardo Kastrup or Sam Harris? Ruth Kastner?
@narasimhansarathi1991 Жыл бұрын
When we die, we don't lose our personality traits. Individual consciousness carries an accumulation of personality traits, desires and attachments of various births including the immediately preceding birth to the next birth. When this carry over stops because of enlightment, and consciousness does not have any baggage, rebirth and reincarnation do not happen. Consciousness, which enables awareness is quality less, eternal and it exists beyond the cyclical universe. This is Advaitha vedanda of Hinduism. K P NARASIMHAN.

An important point I feel is that even if we live in a materialistic, et alone a physicalistic universe surely that doesn't exclude anything, just that that anything has to be material, the logical sequence of the argument appears to go like this 1.Only the material exists 2.X is say spiritual 3.spiritual is not material 4.Therefore X can't exist, but all you have to do is say no X is material, so it's not materialism / physicalism that intrinsically excludes these things but a certain interpretation of those epistemologies, & if they then argue But we have no empirical evidence for X, then reply with "But we have no empirical evidence for not-X" And what about future discoveries, before there was any evidence for anything there wasn't, does that mean it didn't exist & then spontaneously came into existence?

Thanks to Dr.Keating, being polite, but asking challenging questions. Another question: Is the cosmological fine-tuning-argument really good science, since it's impossible, to compare the initial conditions of our universe with the probability of others? Or gives quantum mechanics some tools/equations/universal wave-function to calculate it? Anyhow, the biological arguments of Stephen Meyer, in my opinion, are theological nonsense. There's nothing wrong in believing in God, but if humans could prove him/her scientific, like proveing the description of a phenomenon of nature, he/she would be a phenomenon of nature, and therefore not God.

It showed that Meyer is conversant with a breadth and depth of scientific, philosophical, and historic knowledge This in turn brings light onto inherent materialist bias in science. This does not mean one is "better" or "worse." But it does admit materialist bias is adversely affecting the freedom of inquiry. As to presentation, the conversation was complex but accessible to the lay person. Meyer was also asked to defend his position, which went beyond having him simply retell his book. Viewers need that sort of engagement of ideas. Again, Thank you. I will subscribe.

But go and tell My brothers, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, to My God and your God.’ ” Heb 2:18 Because He Himself suffered when He was tempted, He is able to help those who are being tempted. James 1:13 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He tempt anyone. 14 But each one is tempted when by his own evil desires he is lured away and enticed. Rev 3:12 The one who overcomes I will make a pillar in the temple of My God, and he will never again leave it. Brian, great question at the end about whether or not it is possible to derive a Judeo-Christian God from a study of nature -- and quite a loquacious dodge of the question on Meyer's part. In fairness to Meyer, that has to be the most difficult question to ask a theist, on par or maybe even more difficult than the question of evil. Great interview.

Functional proteins are rare and isolated. Each of them is an island amidst an ocean of non-functional proteins. There is no step-wise incremental path of gradual improvement for natural selection of random mutations to follow to transition from one functional protein to another. Therefore, neo-darwinian evolution, expressed as natural selection of random mutations, cannot be true. The only way functional proteins can be chanced upon by a random process is if they are "guessed" by the process all at once, hence the validity of Dr Meyer's big bike lock analogy. See the work of Douglas Axe for details about the "rare and isolated" point.

The main thrust of Axe's work was to prove the "rare and isolated" observation with mathematical rigor. Spim, your sarcastic remark is inaccurate and non-contributory. Notice that I claimed "there is no step-wise incremental path", without equivocating, then cited work that anyone can look up. However, before you jump directly to that work, I suggest you first brush up on your critical thinking skills and familiarity with logical fallacies, or you'll flounder again, even harder. This particular forum (KZbin comment thread) is not appropriate for hammering out detailed arguments. My intention was simply to cite Axe's careful and thorough research for viewers' to follow up if they wish.

I cannot speak to Hawking’s inner thoughts and suffering. It would be outlandishly presumptuous of me to do so. Speaking generally, I believe from my observations of people that suffering, the question of evil, and even heavy handed Christianity all contribute to unbelief. For most people the facts and observations only get them so far and there has to be a spark that fundamentally changes their worldview. Some people are too hurt or doubtful to undergo that change. It can be scary. Even the notion of being “unscientific” by believing in a God hypothesis or fine tuning can contribute to unbelief. This was even expressed in the very beginning of this video. There is only one truth. That is the goal of theists and scientists isn’t it? Truth... Then why the scoffing when the evidence may lead you to an alternative hypothesis? If God is the first cause, then you would think that a scientist would love to publish that paper proving that! But, I get the feeling that the ultimate truth is not the goal for some.

One takeaway I have from this podcast is how disappointing it is to hear the likes of Newton and his contemporaries being sniggered at on occasion for their belief in alchemy and an ultimate creator. Newton himself talked about the benefit of standing on the shoulders of giants (he only had a few of them). Galileo was certainly a horse of a different colour, (a definite outlier back then). Today's physicists have had legions of giants to help with their intuition of how things might actually be. As for alchemy, it was natural to experiment with this when there was no Periodic Table on the wall to indicate otherwise. And i'm sure that Lawrence would be cooking up a fine brew were he in a 17th Century lab.

There is no requirement that the universe existed for a finite time; just that photons only exist linearly for a certain time before becoming turbulent. If the math was actually right, there's exactly why we have what we have... there's really no magic, but is a matter of minimal energy and balancing... and tending toward a lowest energy state. If there was a completely homogenous universe, left undisturbed, we probably wouldn't be here, but sometime somewhere was a ripple in the pond that allows the homogenous nature to become bipolar between mass and energy. Black holes take energy (heat, photons, even matter in its energy-condensed form), and re-create new matter from the poles. No matter how fast a thing spins, there are always 2 points that are still not really moving, giving the energy a space to spin around itself and destabilize, until a maximum potential is collected there and it gets ejected with high forced from the poles (see:pulsars ). Our galaxy is certainly a 'pulsar' to someone. I'm surprised we haven't been looking for the 'beam of light' in the fog from our own black hole, it should surely be sending out similar X-ray emisions, but maybe because we're within its magnetic field, what we could see gets deflected away, and around. Seems to me, photons are transmissions of torque... the math is also really similar to use gravity as a rotation axis towards itself, but intead of (axis-angle) it's (speed-direction) that it operates on. Magnetism seems to operate on both a thing's rotational and its velocity vector. Linear forces like collisions can cause torque too, and vice versa... so mass is also able to transmit torque and linear motion to other mass. (I really don't want to come up with a theory of everything, I just found rotations... someone else should/could take it and run with it) Someday there might be a 'proton decay' but the proton is a composite of other things, which themselves could time-out and radiate... but I suspect the photon as a whole will end up finding another stray boson to absorb and eventually be 'a Ship of Theseus' en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ship_of_Theseus that although it is itself still a photon, none of its constituent particles are still the same.

Personally, I prefer to use physics to come up with gravity drive propulsion and an alternative to the Alcubierre drive that can work with a reasonable amount of energy, like a few kilowatts. Towards this goal, I prefer to use the actual mechanisms that make the physics of this universe work, even if that mechanism is created by Intelligent Design. It turns out that such a mechanism exists. It's one part "carrier of the physics constants", one part "wave function and the momentum/position/energy operators of psi", and it expands like a water ripple at the speed of light (which makes it perfectly adapted to special relativity). Since quantum entanglement is described with a wave function, then therefore, a quantum entanglement is a graviton. Gravitational redshift is the connection between gravity and photon frequency. Using a graviton, it is possible to run this relationship in reverse. By creating a difference in the frequencies between two entangled photons, one can create a gravitational potential energy between them. Now we are in a better position to create the kind of gravity fields that the Alcubierre drive requires, without using exotic matter.

Stephen Meyer is great, but I have noticed in his various lectures that when he talks about spiritual systems other than Judeo-Christian religions, he makes them very shallow. He describes Eastern spirituality in short as "pantheism". I do not believe that such an educated man sees only pantheism in the East. In one of the lectures he combined pantheism with the idea of "Brahman is Atma, Atma is Brahman" which has nothing to do with pantheism. Brahman is Oversoul and Atma is the individual soul. This idea speaks about the unity of the soul of man and God, and this philosophy is known in India as Advaita Vedanta. The soul that is real transcends the phenomenal world that is unreal. The world is unreal in the sense that it is a reality seen in a false way (through the prism of the mind) and is therefore referred to as illusory. It follows that this world is not something different from God, and it is wrongly associated with pantheism, which is something else entirely. In this philosophy, God exists as the infinite intelligence that is the source of this world. The world, however, is only a reflection of this infinite intelligence. It grows out like hair on the head. As you can see, there are also other concepts different from Judeo-Christian design. There are some problems with this project. The Judeo-Christian God is separate from his creation. From what substance does the Judeo-Christian God create the world, since he is the only existing being before the creation of the universe? He only has himself. Therefore, the idea that this world is nondifferent from God is not without sense. Besides, planning is a process and the process takes time. There was no time before the Big Bang.

The Origins of the Intelligent Design movement "Our strategy has been to change the subject so that we can get the issue of intelligent design - which really means the reality of God's creation - before the academic world and into the schools. This isn't really, and never has been a debate about science or the truth. It's about winning at any cost, and affirming the reality of the God of The Christian Bible, by challenging the domination of materialism and naturalism in the academic arena. With the assistance of many friends I have developed a strategy for doing this which we call "The wedge". But remember, we must avoid debating the Bible and the Book of Genesis at all costs because we do not want to raise the obvious Bible-science dichotomy. Our goal is, "how to win". Phrase the pseudoscience argument in such a way that you can get it heard in secular academia and in a way that tends to unify other science illiterates religious fence-sitters. You must also avoid getting sidetracked onto other issues (like empirical evidence) which our intellectual superiors people are always trying to do." - Phillip E Johnson - the father of the ID/creation-science movement Conclusion: Creationists/ID fans are dishonest cowards

Greatness of Islamic civilisation / Speech of CEO Hewlett Packard, Carli Fiorina " There was once a civilization that was the greatest in the world. It was able to create a continental super-state that stretched from ocean to ocean, and from northern climes to tropics and deserts. Within its dominion lived hundreds of millions of people, of different creeds and ethnic origins. One of its languages became the universal language of much of the world, the bridge between the peoples of a hundred lands. Its armies were made up of people of many nationalities, and its military protection allowed a degree of peace and prosperity that had never been known. And this civilization was driven more than anything, by invention. Its architects designed buildings that defied gravity. Its mathematicians created the algebra and algorithms that would enable the building of computers, and the creation of encryption. Its doctors examined the human body, and found new cures for disease. Its astronomers looked into the heavens, named the stars, and paved the way for space travel and exploration. Its writers created thousands of stories. Stories of courage, romance and magic. When other nations were afraid of ideas, this civilization thrived on them, and kept them alive. When censors threatened to wipe out knowledge from past civilizations, this civilization kept the knowledge alive, and passed it on to others. While modern Western civilization shares many of these traits, the civilization I'm talking about was the Islamic world from the year 800 to 1600, which included the Ottoman Empire and the courts of Baghdad, Damascus and Cairo, and enlightened rulers like Suleiman the Magnificent. Although we are often unaware of our indebtedness to this other civilization, its gifts are very much a part of our heritage. The technology industry would not exist without the contributions of Arab mathematicians. Leaders like Suleiman contributed to our notions of tolerance and civic leadership. And perhaps we can learn a lesson from his example: It was leadership based on meritocracy, not inheritance. It was leadership that harnessed the full capabilities of a very diverse population that included Christianity, Islamic, and Jewish traditions. This kind of enlightened leadership - leadership that nurtured culture, sustainability, diversity and courage - led to 800 years of invention and prosperity" Source: www.hp.com/hpinfo/execteam/speeches/fiorina/minnesota01.html

Enjoy your programs. It seems that a relevant part of the intelligent design discussion should include the possibility that it is mankind's rational structure (in a Kantian sense) that designs the conceptualized universe and creates the uniformity perceived. The physics, the math, the theology can thereby have a common origin in man's consciousness begging the dualistic nature of fundamental questions. One understands that arguments can become circular, i.e., how did mankind's (perceived) intelligence arise. Sorry for the abstruse comment.

Meyer talks about a "pantheistic" East, but honestly, I don't see any pantheism in the East. It is a European concept and Europeans project their ideas onto other cultures (theosophy is to blame for it). Pantheism is the idea that the world is God, ie this world is like a self-regulating conscious mind and there is no God above the world. There are systems of Eastern spirituality where God is this world, but is also above the world and is its source. The world is like a manifestation of God, but it is not the wholeness of God. Buddhism is interesting because although it is considered atheistic, based on the words of the Buddha himself, it can be concluded that he considers himself to be the God from which the world emerged. He speaks of himself as a being who takes the form of a person to save all creatures. Buddhist scriptures: “I am the core of all that exists. I am the seed of all that exists. I am the cause of all that exists. I am the trunk of all that exists. I am the foundation of all that exists. I am the root of existence. I am 'the core' because I contain all phenomena. I am 'the seed' because I give birth to everything. I am 'the cause' because all comes forth from me. I am 'the trunk' because the ramifications of every event sprout from me. I am 'the foundation' because all abides in me. I am called 'the root' because I am everything. " - Kulayaraja Tantra "Thousands of millions of spheres are magically created by me, and they serve beings. Even there my Body cannot be grasped. Markless, signless, as is the sky - thus is defined my Body, which is ineffable and hard to understand. The Great Hero [ie, Buddha] is identical with the Absolute Body. Born of Dharma is his body; the Victorious One [ie, Buddha] cannot be conceived in the aspect of the Material Body. " - Samadhiraja Sutra "Now this triple world, All is my domain; the living beings in it all are my sons. But now this place abounds with distresses; and I alone am able to save and protect them." - Saddharma Puṇḍarīka Sūtra

I don't find the multiverse to be a better explanation for fine tuning than intelligent design. Both are unsupported by evidence. We can see examples of nature creating structures that appear intelligently designed, but are really just the result of simple physical laws. I think the default hypothesis is that the universe was created by some natural process that is unknown to us, and probably will never be known.

Hi Dr Keating _ interesting talk thank you for showing. I would like to encourage you have a dialogue / discussion with and invite John Vervaeke to your podcast. He in my view has his finger on the pulse of the relevance of how we relate to god in these times and how science best understands it... Would be a good link up I feel. Best Wishes.
