Hi Stephen I like your lessons! I play open position. So with any lessons where it’s being taught by a cross-handed player, I have to switch the instructions so I can play the hi hats with my left. I have subscribed to some drummers who play open position, but most don’t play open. I wish there were more videos on open-position playing, IMHO it’s much more comfortable!😁 🙌🏼 🥁

@@yesdrums6627 Stephen is a great teacher! I like your idea though as a way to try and get a sense of what "open" playing is/feels like... seems like a good basic way to start for someone with no experience playing "open."

I've been using "Syncopation" to teach myself how to read notation and generally improve as a drummer so it's great to get some new ways to use it. Anyone who doesn't currently have this book, buy it. Even just playing the exercises hand to hand on the snare and keeping the 4 on the floor pulse has helped my timing, coordination and stick control immensely.

I dunno maybe the trick is, is to work on two different limbs separately and gradually incorporate the 3rd and then the 4th once you have the others working independently. Spend a month on the two and another month on the 3rd and another month on the fourth. Maybe breaking them up in sections is an easier way for achieving independence. It’s not your limbs you have to train, it’s your brain preventing the independence. You have to train your brain.

Good video. I'm just learning and this is a great way to help coordination. I've only been playing about a month but I make sure to practice rudiments daily. Another trick to help practice is I will make sure every exercise I do, I repeat it twice as long with my weak hand/foot. So if I'm right handing the high-hat, and left handing the snare, the next go-around I'll swap hands. I'll do the same with my feet. Playing the base with my right foot, then the next go with my left (double bass peddle). It's helped a ton to make sure both hands and feet stay equal in abilities. Thanks for the upload.

I'm a pianist going into my junior year of college in jazz studies, and I'm realizing that as a multiphonic instrument player, if I really want to become the best player I can be, I REALLY need to build some frameworks for understanding rhythmic counterpoint. I have decent time feel, but coordination is something I've always struggled with and because I can fake it so easily, I often don't take the time to really learn each part in conjunction with the other. Planning to build some of those frameworks this summer.

learning anything is tedious at first, and sometimes second hehe. relearning drums after 30 years for me has been fun but at least I retained some muscle memory just lack that coordination or more difficult breaking the hand foot coordination? am i saying that right, like my natural reflexive tendency to swing my right hand with my right foot so even if I am trying to alternate high hat open/close with the kick and trying to hit every other beat with my hands I tend to have to fight the urge to hit the snare when i am closing the high hat and the urge to hit whatever my right hand is over when I hit the kick. I like the sound of that opening groove, which helps in doing something, even if it's mundane, if it sounds cool, or feels good to play then it will be less annoying and I will be more likely to actually practice it. I am still trying to get a triplet to sync right, that coordination is getting better with time but yeah, at full speed a tom tom kick sounds really good, or any variation of that triplet.

I'm a newbie, so please be kind, but when he's doing the jazz section, the time on the notes seems wrong. On the ride cymbal, it shows quarter, two 8ths, then quarter, then two 8ths. So between 2 and 3, and 4 and 1, there should be three evenly spaced notes according to the transcription. But it's supposed to represent the spang-a-lang right? It just seems off, especially since the kick or snare on the 'and' of 2 is supposedly on the same note, which shouldn't be the case right?

thanks coach, but why the snare on 3? [as opposed to 2 and/or 4]?
@blakenunndrums3 жыл бұрын
That displaces the beat into the right place to help you get the independence part of it. If you're always smacking on 2 and 4, you're only going to develop muscle memory for playing those beats on the snare, rather than the independence part of displacing the beat. Also, when playing in 12/8 (or 6) or stuff like the Purdie shuffle, you're frequently accenting on beat 3 rather than 2 and 4. You can count them as triplets in 4 too though. 1&a2&aTHREE&a4&a. Happy drumming, bro!
@jasonzurlo15433 жыл бұрын
It's just a halftime feel. It's essentially still on 2 and 4 but at half the speed, so you hit beat 3 and it takes 2 measures to finish the pattern.

Man... I am struggling so dann hard on that first pattern! I am playing drums for about 9 weeks now, with weekly lessons and I am capable of doing a few beats at around 100 bpm. But this first pattern wrecks my brain so hard... it's so frustrating I don't know why! It's actually a quite simple pattern and yet my brain refuses to get cool with it. I am 36 years old... maybe that's the problem? I have been practicing this beat now for about 4 hours straight and also a bit yesterday and yet I only can cleanly do it at 60 bpm. Anything after than that and my brain melts down... Is this normal? I mean this pattern is supposed to teach independence for my limb movement. Maybe he chose it because it seems simple yet is kind hard... can somebody please tell me that I am not to old an stupid to learn the drums! I love it so far but this exercise kills me...

stephen im just discovering this video and im excited to start implementing, but ive noticed you dont have any videos on doing double bass anything you would recomend? im sure being able to syncopate both my weak leg will get stronger and then work from there, i would realistically be able to do double kick on a single kick but also double bass, i can comfortable play 2 singles or a double pedal but i know i have a huge range for improvement (especially with hand technique and mastering, well for starters just being able to play comfortably with my fingers)
