Here are a few ways to really use Syncopation. Syncopation is a book that just throws you right into it, and many may not understand how to get a good use out of it. Well there are so many ways, but this is one very effective way. I hope you dig it, and get to use these ideas to better your independence and playing. I will continue this series in the future. Thanks!

This video is picking up some steam, so if you're interested I made a pt. 2 related to bass drum speed (which I am still trying to get down haha)! You can check that out here ►kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z4WyhaOdaJl-ack

The book is not not boring as you stated. The exercise you referred to on page 38 may or may not be correct, it depends on what edition of the book.

I have one question, when studying the syncopation rhythm book, can I write the ostinato over the notes, and read the entire staff while studying? Or is the idea to play the ostinato from memory while reading and playing the rhythm? It's because if I don't write the ostinato I won't be able to play everything together.... I tried it and I'm not getting it. I'm still at the beginning of learning the drums. More videos like this please :) This is a very important topic that I didn't cover in this way in my drum classes. And more videos of subdivisions; rudiments and their application to the entire kit; improvisation :)) Good video, thank you, help a lot.

It's definitely okay to write it out if you can't get it. I did this with a lot of things as I progressed. In fact I did it the other day when I couldn't figure out the ending of Dramamine by Modest Mouse as it's in a complex time signature. By doing this you will be closer to being able to do it from memory. It will help your brain understand how things fit into this ostinato. I would however down the line start to stray from it and see if you can start to get new exercises without reading the ostinato notation. I hope this helps.

Nice video, I do think Stick Control is more popular than Syncopation, but I think Syncopation's better, always nice to see some stuff on using it since there's so many ways
@TomPompei

Thanks a lot! Yeah I wouldn't argue against that, I think they're both very popular, but you may be right. I actually cut out a part talking about Stick Control haha. Glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for the sub as well.

@@TomPompei No problem. Stick control is fantastic at what it is, but I've always thought Syncopation is much more about musicality.

I’ve been playing drums for over 40 years and just my opinion here I think syncopation is a way better book and actually easier book to use, i’ve been teaching Drum lessons for over 15 years now and and I know that’s not a book to provide to students because they’ll just walk out the door hahahah..so I just take it back to syncopation , i’ve actually never completed the whole stick control book in all honesty have you,
@pietzsche
@pietzsche 2 жыл бұрын
@@mghc7 no, definitely not, there's tons in stick control I've never even tried. The fact syncopation is actually aimed at kit paying rather than all snare is a big plus for me too

Maybe this is a silly question but, when you're playing a pattern through on the snare to start out, I notice that you're playing it with both hands (as opposed to when later on you're playing it on just one limb while everything else is playing an ostinato). But you're not playing hand to hand, like left right left right left right - you're playing more like groups of a few notes, sometimes starting on the right, sometimes starting on the left, so that sometimes you actually play two rights in a row or two lefts in a row. My question is, how do you now what sticking to use here? Are you just vibing it, or is there something in the notation that indicates which hands to use? I'm not really familiar with reading music yet so maybe I'm missing something obvious. Sorry I know this was uploaded a while ago but I'd love to practice this and would appreciate some guidance

Hey! Great question. Unless it's notated, which in this case it isn't, then I pretty much vibe it out. I generally like to keep Rights on downbeats so the 1,2,3,4 and lefts on the upbeats so the ands if we're just talking about eighth notes. However if there are only quarters in a row then I still variate the sticking. This means sometimes you'll have two lefts in a row or two rights if there's rests. for example say we have two quarters in a row and then an eighth note rest and an eighth note on the and of 3. I would play Right Left and then Left. This isn't necessary it's just comfortable for me. I really just try to find a sticking that feels comfortable, it can be very important to find the most efficient/comfortable sticking. I hope that helps!

Hey! I actually made a pt 2 to this video on the channel which goes over that section in more depth. I'm forgetting the page numbers, but I think it's just the next two pages of patterns in the book and playing them as 16ths on the kick. I do in fact like ham btw, specifically rum ham
