i have a tip for tendonitis: get 2 containers of water (both big enough to fit your hands in) make one as cold as possible and the other one nice and hot (as hot as is comfortable) first submerge your hands in the hot one for 2 or 3 minutes then take them out and immediately submerge them in the very cold water for 2 or 3 minutes. repeat this process a few times in a row. It's called hot cold therapy and is good for recovery of your tissues but especially tendons, the problem with healing tendons is they have very low amount of blood flow compared with other tissues, one thing with the hot cold therapy is it increases the blood flow to that region vastly, so it's particularly good for tendonitis.

im 48 and I'm starting to experience the same thing. I switched to custom gauges roughly 3 years ago 0.85 0.12 0.16 0.24 0.34 0.48 from standard 0.95/0.44 sets and it definitely helped. I had to adjust how firm I was gripping the neck and that took a little bit but back on track and everything is better now. i'm not having problems holding the pick yet but I am having some issues with my elbow and my shoulder especially with thicker acoustic guitars. I have noticed that doing some stretches with my hands and arms helps a little bit. I am mostly blind and so I basically play at home and record at home so I have just been taking breaks in between songs and getting up and stretching out and also doing stretches before playing. also anti-inflammatory creams help because if I'm not mistaken most of that is from inflammation anyways. I definitely want to look further into this because I would like to be able to make it to 70 and still be able to play.
@SDPickups28 күн бұрын
My left elbow hurts alot when I play sometimes. I'll be 75 in a few weeks. I had Dupuytrens and it permanently bent my pinky on fretting hand so I can no longer do full big barre chords, so I have to use short 3 or 4 strings chords. I think diet may have something to do with it all. If I go Vegan, tendonitis shows its ugly head and nobody knows why. Lighter strings help. Some 8 gauge strings are just awful. The Bill Gibbons 8 gauge and 7 gauge are truly complete garbage. Shoulda known better than buy signature strings he probably doesn't even use.
@9th_note28 күн бұрын
@@SDPickups yeah I would be willing to bet that diet is probably at least 65 or 70% of the problem but figuring out what to eat is the difficult part. i'm diabetic so I'm sure some of it is from neuropathy. I have been using string Joy strings as they seem to be pretty decent strings and they offer custom gauges at no extra charge. They have a string tension calculator on their website that I use to balance out my gauges. I was going to go ahead and order a set of 7s next time just to try them out. I may have to learn how to play even lighter but I'm up for the challenge. I like the control over my vibrato with lighter strings, with heavier strings it feels like you kind of get what you get with control over the instrument and with lighter strings you can have complete control but you also have to learn how to hold back from ripping the neck off the guitar lol. also I have noticed that the tension between brands of strings is different, D'adario also has a string tension calculator on their website and depending on the set that you get from them as far as which model the tension can be completely different even with the exact same gauges. unfortunately not every manufacturer offers attention calculator for their exact strings so you just have to spend your money and try them out but so far the string joy has been a winner for me and sometimes I use d'adario depending on the guitar that they're going on. it's weird man, some guitars don't like some strings and just play better with different strings on them. I have several Ibanez rg models that are for all intent and purpose the exact same guitar and my prestige plays great with the string Joy 0.85s but those exact same strings on another rg with basically the same neck and the same frets feels stiff even with the string joys. most signature sets from just about any brand that I have tried haven't really been that great in my opinion, there's always a gauge of some string in there that's either too heavy or too light for my taste. I definitely think strings are overlooked by a lot of people and that many people use way too heavy of a gauge and I didn't start learning this until later in life but it's the user interface in which you create music and so the importance of them is definitely there. after reading many articles I have come to discover that most of the really good expressive players are using light strings which made a lot of sense to me, even when I was in my 20s 10s just seemed ridiculous to bend for me. I do not have weak hands but just seem like it was a little bit over the top. I feel like everyone is convinced that thicker strings equals tone and they spend most of their life fighting their guitar instead of playing it and I was one of those people for a long time. Maybe that is part of what contributed to the arthritis, not sure but I'm definitely enjoying playing lighter gauges now.

Thats a Garnet "stencil" amplifier under the name MANN. Two 6L6's, hand wired, no bells and whistles, just reverb and vibrato. Its about 35 watts. No pedals. I'm using Celestion Chinese Greenbacks (the British ones aren't as good). Treble on full, bass pretty much off, mids on 10. Some reverb. The secret is that the circuits are very simple, Gar was a genius at that. There are many different brands he built for, you have to look them up, but MANN is one. I have two of them, both were only $450.
@kuitaristi30039 ай бұрын
Yeah it's good to use that size strings what feels good and not force fingers to bigger just because it sounds different. Amps usually has bass, middle and treble for reason so that's how you can compensate the tone. For many i say forget the tone talking for strings and use what ever feels right for your fingers. That's my opinion. I bet you Dave know this just saying for those who don't get it.

Well there's a video on KZbin that proved that 8 gauge strings RECORD better than all the other gauges. Don't forget Page used them and most all of us back then used them too, because there were no other small gauges available. Black Diamonds were all that existed in the USA and nobody over here thought to use banjo strings like some did in the UK. I'm going to try some other brands in 8 gauge, probably won't do a video on that, but its really worth trying these strings out. I did a video on Page a long time ago so bought some 8's to try to get his tone. Surprisingly that set lasted a full year and never broke a string. Some guys like Kossoff and Bloomfield stuck with the Black Diamond gauges of 13-14 gauges. I just remember how freaking hard it was to BEND those strings, they bowed the neck on my cheap Japanese guitar really bad, I don't know how I did it except I was 15, 1965

I'm using our now vanished Four Uncles Bridge, so I notched them the way Stew Mac shows, that Gibson uses on the high unwound strings. @SDPickups7 ай бұрын
About 1/8" above the bridge pickup and a little more than that over the neck. People shouldn't be concerned about measurements like that. Sit down and play your guitar. Put the strings close to each pickup and play. Now raise the strings some and listen again. There's no other way you'll get to your sweet spot. If you're too close to the pickup the tone will be too loud and you may get some string pull warble that will mess up the frequencies. Raise it up more and you'll get more pure tones. The treble sounds will change depending on height and how your pole screws are adjusted. My PAF replica magnets are only charged to the same power that vintage alnico bar magnets had, so my height adjustments will be different than what factory or amateur "winders" are. I'll be offering this set pretty soon. Am raising my prices as the amount of time to machine all the parts I make can push 15 hours, I don't use commercial parts because no one uses the right materials and physical design of real PAFs.

I bought one of these gentleman's pickups used. Biggest financial mistake of my life. I installed it on one of my guitars and now all of the other guitars I have sound like toys. I am not kidding, I wish I was. Long story long: My guitar sensei bought a strange HSS partscaster Strat like five or six years ago. In theory it belonged to Dan Spitz of Anthrax (couldn't find any pics of it online though). Its body was made of some weird wood and I swear it was the best sounding super strat I've ever heard. Its sound was rich, full, sweet, crisp, and all those good adjetives at the same time. Sensei is always trading guitars so eventually he put this strat for sell but I didn't have any money at the time (still don't). All my guitars were 'entry level' back then so I decided to buy my first 'good guitar' and got a Godin Session LTD. It came with a Seymour Duncan SH11 on the bridge and I put other two Seymour Duncan's in middle and neck position. It sounds nice, but nothing extraordinary. Then I got an Ibanez RG370 just because. I have upgraded the bridge pickup (SD Alternative 8 and then SD 59') and SD Full Shred for the neck. It's a good sounding guitar too but nothing special. A couple years later I got a Fender Mustang, another nice guitar. It's a little bit different of what I am used to but it definetely sounds and feels better. Then one day I went into the store to get a Kramer SM 1 but it was so poorly set up that I couldn't even play it. I was disappointed but I already wanted to buy a new guitar.. so I thought 'I might need a Les Paul'. I was looking at the nice and shiny Epiphones but decided to try the cheapest Gibson (always hated Gibson for some reason, probably because I am broke) and the clerk handed me a 2022 LP Tribute. Sat down, played unplugged for like 30 secs and I knew it was the one. Best neck I've ever felt and it sounds good enough for me. That guitar has been the one since then until today :) Why until today? Well, it turns out that my guitar sensei kept the humbucker that came with the Dan Spit'z strat. He said it was too good to let it go. He had put that humbucker on a tele, sounded fantastic. Then put it on an extremely cheap strat, sounded awesome. I couldn't believe that a $100 strat sounded better than my LP.. Last week he told me he was going to do some mods to the cheap strat and that I could buy the humbucker if I wanted to. I absolutely did it. It's supposed to be a Stephen Design humbucker, it says Dan Spitz on the back, also says 'neck' (so it's a neck pup) and some other stuff I don't understand (it has a signature aswell). I wanted to try it on my LP but it has a circuit board and the pickups connect to the board with a quick connect adapter but I don't have any of those connectors so I decided to put the humbucker somewhere else. 3 hours ago I put it in the bridge of my Ibanez and man... It's almost as if I bought a new guitar. I know I don't have fancy stuff but I can tell when something has that special mojo. My cheap RG now suddendly sounds boutique and all the other guitars, including the LP, sound like there's something missing. I truly cannot believe the difference it made. BTW I am using a Marshall Origin 20 (combo with speaker swapped, 10 inch greenback), and pedals are TS 808, Blues Driver Waza and Suhr Riot for the heavier stuff. I can easily tell the difference even with my little amp. I am wondering how it will sound once I upgrade it. And the biggest issue, now I want to change all my pickups for Stephen Designs :) And as I don't live in the US, that might be a little bit difficult because of custom's restrictions. Well that's about it, thank you for making the world a better place. PD: Killer sound on this vid.. and I hope you find a solution for tendinitis. It sucks.
@SDPickups8 ай бұрын
I first started reading your comment and it sounded like you hated my work, but read further and found the opposite. Dan Spitz is a really cool guy and is big into the vintage Les Paul thing, so my PAF replicas were perfect for him, plus he's a great player. We did trades for pickups and I got a prototype Wah and an interesting fuzz that only half worked and a few other things. If you search my channel using the magnifying glass search function I have a demo he did for me if I remember right. He can sound like Clapton on Beano, very talented musician. I'm not taking orders for now, I have too many old orders and am caught between the old orders and trying to sell my NOS vintage wire sets to keep us alive, pretty stressful times for me, but am managing to hang on here at 74 years old. I hope I can slowly get out of this jam so I can get back to making the less expensive sets so guys like you can get them. I'm just one man, I dont have any help, and the sets I make take up around 15 hours to manufacture my own parts necessary to get the tones I get from following true reverse engineering work I did for more than 20 years. There are no commercial parts that will match the old PAF's, or even the single coils, all of it is offshore materials and parts that just give bland sound I can't stand. The tendonitis is still here, was Vegan and every time I do that I get bad tendonitis, I researched everything I could find and nobody seems to know what nutritional deficiency can cause it. Anyway, thanks for the comments.
