my father used to put us in the game room with canvas and easel in place and he would say paint, no-nonsense kind of disciplinarian. I just rolled with it and my brother would ask what are we painting and every time same response,"anything you want, make it look nice" Now that I look back on it, that was the best life gift he gave us.

I’m an amateur illustrator and I choose hatching and crosshatching for shading, I really enjoyed it. It’s fun honestly, your videos sir are a great help for me and maybe for other rookie illustrator out there who choose this path. I don’t understand such educative and easy to understand explanation video has little viewer. Anyway thank you for sharing your knowledge Sir.

I’m a trained artist, I sketch everyday, I taught art for 36 years. I’m selling a lot if my pen and wash sketches during covid. I like your line work very much…your multiple lines are very effective.

It’s not an easy job for me, but very helpful indeed! I have ruined every my drawings due to the mistakes in hatching . I think my problem is lack of consistency. Thanks Stephen

This is very nice, thanks! I use pencil and one issue I often have when I hatch is that the hatches all run together such that it looks like I may as well have used the side of the lead and done more of a smear shading. I quickly run out of the "line" effect of hatching. Even using pen/ink you seem to be able to get the proper shading effect, while still preserving the lines of the hatching. That ability eludes me!

Thanks. Yea, that is both a strength and danger drawing with pencil. I have a hatching playlist if you’re interested in more on it from me. Might be helpful 😀

Sorry. This is an earlier video where I was doing larger drawings which required more speeding up. And I do have some real time drawings now, and sometimes post at least a few minutes of. RT at the end. 😀

OK, I know this will sound terrible and I could say Good Work or something similar, but you are making so many mistakes for a Pro, I know this may sound totally rude but please conntact me if you want to know more about Hatching, You put great effort in this videos so I hope you are open for constructive critique. Best wishes, Boris.

Thanks for your thoughts Boris. Not for a moment do I think this is the only way to hatch. I encourage people to experiment and judge the different effects they can create. My preference is to hatch in a direction which either is consistent with the direction and angles of the perspective for the plane, or which reflects the form of the surface. But with clarity of adjacent objects also in consideration. I’m afraid I’m not art trained, so how I draw is how it seemed practical for me to get the effect I’m after (or something of it). Understanding options for hatching is very helpful, but I don’t think there is a ‘right’ way to apply them. Just different ways to create different effects to choose from. Appreciate your thoughts, and as an ex high school teacher, I’m not easily offended. 😆
