I loved the way you demonstrated shading by putting a piece of tracing paper over a more complex drawing. That was very helpful. Sometimes it's easy to grasp a concept on a simple form but get a little lost when trying to apply it to a more challenging subject matter.

Alphonso; once again, you are an amazing teacher. You help me so much by the knowledge you have of drawing, but more than that by your practical, lucidity with which you teach. You are a true master not only of your craft of drawing, but even more so with your craft of teaching. God Bless you, dar man.

Thank you Alphonso for your awesome presentations! My impression , together with Part 2, is that shading with tone, however faster it is than with lines, does not render shape and orientation as palpably as the lines ...

Agreed

It would’ve been an interesting aid/demonstration for you to have a sheet of paper as the two dimensional front-facing object, add a shade gradient in vertical and horizontal lines, and then bend the paper itself into a tube and show it from different angles so we could see the line orientation change.

This video is wonderful, Alphonso! Well done! I recently bought a glass dip pen - it can only do hatching or stippling (unless a brush is used.. but I really only wanted to use the pen alone) - and this is just what I needed! Thank-you so much for this video!! :)

It wasn't until the "counter example" at 19m45s that I really *got* it - for me, 3d is fine and the "bending the plane" is easy to visualize, "how would you *not* do that, isn't it obvious?" but then it clicked when you drew it the "wrong" way and I finally understood what the question was !
