Way to go for your due diligence Stephen. You did everything right and I totally agree with you for doing so. If you see red flags like that, it's way better to spend the extra time to investigate further than risk anything else. Very good job. 👍

Sounds like that landlord needs to learn some self-awareness cause he so should have provided more proof to make it look less sketchy.
@Kairamek13 күн бұрын
I can promise your landlord doesnt realize how schetcy that sounded. In my day job I work with both people who forgot their account details and social engineers trying to access an account. They sound exactly the same when they get frustrated. The real people don't realize they sound like a scammer.

TBF if real people sounded different scammers likely would adapt.

My last landlord was also a huge character that left me with many wild stories. Two of them are one time he came over so we could talk about something he lied about on the lease which was. Causing us to have to pay much more in bills than we should have been, and after that he forced my roommate to make him a drink cause we had a bar in our living room. He then sat and we had to essentially hang out with him for an extra hour Another time he called me strictly because he was going through a divorce and wanted me to help fund him a girlfriend because for some reason he thought that we were friends and wanted someone who was much closer to my age than his. He basically gave me a dating profile that he wanted me to shill out to anyone I knew that fit his criteria. That’s just two stories over the course of 3 years as this guy’s tenant

Oh no, I'm sorry Stephen, that's super confusing and scary. Today was even more of a heart attack than we thought! 2 very different heart attacks but. It's too bad, it's such a nice house for such a red flag landlord lol.

I am so sorry, but I haven't laughed as much as I did during the Subnautica CC stream in a long, long time. What a hilarious stream. I hope you were able to recover okay. 😂 The whole landlord story just makes me wonder why there aren't more official or verified ways for landlords to update their information like this. Of course that's gonna sound sketchy as hell! I hope the landlord actually realised how weird it was.

At least your landlords didn't force you to move out so they can move in their son and his newlywed wife BEFORE THE HOLIDAYS! Because yeah...that's what me and my family are currently going through. I mean, I know your guys's history with moving and landlords, and etc so it's not lost on me. I just needed to rant, lol

@@Gemma-Majoran Oh we know. My wife has already told these people that we have upwards of 90 days according to our lease so we're using that to our advantage.

I know this was first came up from a long time ago (myrtle beach apartment), but has being registered as an LLC given you any progress towards home ownership? I heard somewhere that being self employed makes it even harder. For example volitiy in earnings make loaners skittish (so you have to fix your salary), and apparently you don't get the first time buyer 3% down - you have to do 20%. Has this been the case for you, Stephen and Mal?
@SilverXCIV14 күн бұрын
Wow, I almost want to redact my question because I just looked, and to get a house similar to your set up right now of living vs work space in your area of Raleigh would be $600,000 - that's ludicrous
@ChadHex13 күн бұрын
I know this was a little more than a week ago, and I don't know all the terms of your lease agreement (and maybe landlord has called back since), but was there any possible way to pay rent with a credit card for the month? Just as a way to easily dispute the charge if it was confirmed to be a scam?
@HotaruHikai13 күн бұрын
I'm honestly surprised your landlord doesn't have a property manager, generally when people are this non-involved and absent they have a middle man to take care of things.

Always good to be sure, it’s kinda weird the landlord would be uncontactable AND use an address where no one lives in, but that’s very unusual what they were trying to pull.

The tales about landlords... good gods, there are too many. One tried to get into the house without permission (which I expected so I changed the locks), decided to start remodelling by taking off the roof and putting another floor on it while we lived there. Another decided to have another couple over at the same time while I came to check out the place and rambled about 'there's rent, then security deposit, and a little something for the owner', another sent a beatdown-crew to get rid of squatters in a greenhouse on the grounds. You were right about checking it out. And even if nothing comes off it, that landlord seems fishy, best continue to look for something permanent.

Man, I keep forgetting that Americans still write cheques sometimes. I have never seen one in my life. I even had to look up if I spelled cheque correctly. It just doesn't exist in my life.

Here, it's "check," and they're still quite common for a lot of situations, like Stephen's, or even my hairdresser, who takes cash or checks!

It's kinda funny because I live in Connecticut but own a house in Texas and rent it. We're cool (I think) because we don't really care what our tenants do down there, just have the curtesy of telling us what you're going to modify, but we never had a skecthy situation like that! We answer the phone if they call and haven't changed bank info in forever. I wish landlords were more reachable and friendly!!!

I fully understand the appeal of not having to maintain a property or be responsible for damages/appliances, etc, and also not having to commit to a home purchase/mortgage. At the same time, though, renting is also a gamble, and rightfully so. Renting equals living on someone else's property, and just because someone rents out a property, sadly, doesn't mean they're going to be helpful, communicative, professional, or even kind. At the end of the day, it's still their property. That's not an excuse for their behavior, but it also can't really be too surprising when people prove to be imperfect people. Just as you'd have to expect probable problems to arise by owning a home, you'd equally have to expect probable problems to arise from a landlord who owns the property you're living on.

As a single man this is why I don't rent anymore, I live in my SUV and work contract jobs. And it's so hard to find a landlord with any common sense. Good luck Stephen, sorry you still have to deal with landlords.
