I was a huge fan of Steppenwolf back then. The shortened version was on top 40 radio, and that version, the band played on the Smothers Brothers show. The video on this channel wasn't played on the show. It was just the group playing with an oscilloscope reacting to the music.

I was in 6th grade in 1968. We were lucky enough to have a jukebox in the cafeteria with all the current hit songs on it. For a dime you got one selection, and for a quarter you got four. "Magic Capet Ride" and "Born to be Wild" were two of the amazing songs we selected every day to serenade us while we ate our lunch. Man, how fortunate could a 12 year old be to hear those magnificent songs while they were actually moving up the charts and brand new.

Another huge hit from 1968 from Steppenwolf. Went to #1 here in 🇨🇦 Canada and #3 in the USA. It's from their Steppenwolf Second album ❤❤❤❤❤

This was a huge hit during the psychedelic period of rock. Another one was "Inna Godda Davida" (sp?) by Iron Butterfly. BTW, both of these bands along with Deep Purple were also considered Acid Rock Bands as well as Blues Psychedelic Rock Bands.

Having lived and lived this era of music, it is with great joy that I see younger people, from all over the world, discovering the music of the high renaissance from 1964 to 1974, roughly, ending with the end of the Vietnam War. Hearing people in Europe, today, using words like vibes and groovy and into...pretty far out. Those at the time who used herbs rather than the prescribed derailleurs, made timeless music treasured even now. Others went down darker paths, and are largely forgotten. The leading zeitgeist was one of mind-expansion, not destruction. Y'all would fit right into any number of gathers at that time, where future geniuses shared ideas, books, music, food and so on. And laughter. Lots of laughter. Peace and love. PS. In other news...not my fault.

Love watching your reactions because they are always so much fun and they make me smile. You mentioned that you were relating it to drugs and although it has a psychedelic vibe, for me anyway, it speaks about music. In the lyrics when it says, “close your eyes girl, step inside girl, let the music take you away”, to me it’s saying if you close your eyes and let the music take over that it’s like being on a magic carpet ride because of where the music takes you as you relax and just let it take over your mind and body. I don’t know how others interpret it but that’s always been my own experience and thoughts whenever I listen to this song, and music in general actually. I know from watching your reactions that you both know what I mean by that because you have shown me that various songs have affected both of you deeply as you listened to them and they profoundly touched your heart . Anyway, that’s how I see it when I listen to this song and maybe no one else does but that’s okay. Have a wonderful day my friends and take care of each other! ❤

To get that introduction sound, guitarist Michael Monarch created feedback then it was spliced on to the beginning of the song. John Kay wrote Magic Carpet Ride after buying a new high quality hi-fi system. According to him started writing lyrics “about how great our new stereo system sounded”, adding in imagery about making a wish. The line “between the sound machine” refers to the way we used have giant speakers set up, then blast the music❤️

The electric sound you were asking about is electronic feedback that we hear when a guitar or microphone is too close to an amp. The Beatles were the first to use it on purpose in the beginning of "I feel fine"

This song is about psychedelic drugs, although drugs are a bad name. Drugs (and pusher) refer to addictive chemicals. Heroin, cocaine, meth, etc. This song refers to LSD. It says to lie down between two speakers. Under the influence of LSD, you get overwhelmed by the music........thus the "magic carpet ride". On the "Pusher" a "dealer" is a person who deals with LSD (acid) and Marijuana while a "Pusher" hustle addictive drugs.

Ha! You speak of imagining big speakers and such. In actuality, at this time, when you went into a stereo store to make a purchase, this was the song they put on so you could judge the quality of the speaker. Did it have a strong resonant bass end? Did it have clarity at the high end? Great song for that.

Smoking weed back then was, as you say, about as casual a thing as having a beer or glass of wine. It was no where near as strong as it is today. You got a light buzz. And it was social, and shared, as the joint was passed around …..very convivial. Of course, not our whole generation used drugs. Perhaps 20%. Depending on what state you were in, ( and your race) being caught could be a minor issue or a catastrophe. I was in liberal areas, so we were careful but yeah….very casual thing. Mainly at friend’s homes and at concerts.

You don’t have to be quite so fierce with your “Drugs are “ Bad” etc etc. a good percentage of your subs used/use pot and tried psychedelics back in the day. It’s not the same as heroin or fentanyl or meth. And recreational marijuana is now legal in half the states in the US. Whether or not you would ever partake yourselves, weed is not a negative thing to most Americans these days. And it certainly wasn’t to us back in the day.
