Words can't describe how elegant and passionate this is.... when he picks up the tenor after the EWI....simply the benchmark for modern saxophone playing. You can tell that the rest of players know they are in the presence of a genius. He is actually shaking the horn for an effect at one point. Something Coltrane might have done in 1966.

Steve Gadd and his incredible 12-minute, imperceptible crescendo. Nobody can measure the arc of an arrangement and develop it like Gadd can. To notice the subtle changes he makes to develop the form you have to listen so closely, but their effect is there, whether you realize it or not. Just incredible. It's an art he brings to so much of the music he plays. Of course, he doesn't do it alone here; as the band builds, it's amazing to realize they are STILL building and not done yet!

@@Minotauro_di_Chieti OK. Have you heard of a thing called "hyperbole"? There are indeed other drummers who have a good sense of an arrangement's form and can develop it. But, even speaking more literally, there is no denying that Gadd is a master at it, and his vocabulary of subtle changes just always works.
@ofdrumsandchords Жыл бұрын
Frodohotep I agree, what Gadd is doing here is, as always, putting all his talent in the tune and forgetting about himself. I knew the version with Erskine, who is a very dynamic drummer (meaning he can play from ppp to fff) and Gadd brings it to another level. Cobham could do something like that, he has the fineness, and the power. Not much people have this palette. DeJohnette can be very delicate and also extremely powerful. Anyway, this is why they hire Gadd.
