EDIT: The Doepfer A121S is a fully analog filter. At 07:28 I made a remark that it's 'clearly under digital control' . It was an assumption. I checked with the distributor and the dual sandwich boards on the back are not for any kind of digital control, these chips are the VCA's for morphing between the different bands. So please consider the A121S to be fully analog!

The Freak filter is so underrated. For the price, the number of different filter types + cv controllability. It's one of my favorite stereo filters. Great showcasing the different mfg's models.

Thru ! All Léonardo's (VULT) modules are so underrrated, FREAKS is really a hudge digital filter with a lot of great virtual analogic re-creation from Léo for a ridiculous price, and VORG (mono) is one of the best old MS-20 style filter in Eurorack. ANIMA seq is soooo lovely, FUSER mix sounds really good when pushed hard and FEIGEN is a hidden gem that can push the patch way further. And what's also great is that all these Vult modules were first created for VCV Rack. Then, as these modules were particularly appreciated by the first users of VCV Rack (It was still in beta version), Leonardo who was doing analog circuit virtualization, did the reverse process to build us some hardware modules. But there are very few and Leonardo won't build many more. ..and yes, another great vid from Cinematic Laboratory, a very interesting one ! Many thanks Robert !

Thanks for watching and I hope you'll find the right one. That 'scope' is part of the PolyGogo. It's a big module.
@pierreliefauche2 жыл бұрын
Freak deserves more attention imo. And it definitely deserves more modulation. The models sound great and modulating it is instantly rewarding. The latest firmware (not installed on yours) adds even more models and a stereo VCA. I wouldn’t compare it to Squawk Dirty. Sure it’s the same broad concept (digital multi model filter) but Freak is leaps and bounds ahead in terms of quality, modulation and playability. The Polygogo is so rich when it comes to stereo that a “simple” filter like Squawk Dirty or Dual Dagger does the trick (I actually used both to filter my Polygogo), specially for drones. But that’s not where Freak shines and it would be underutilizing it.

VoicAs makes a stereo VCA, the 2^4^8. It has 2 channels of stereo, and 4 mono channels. ST Modular also makes the SVCA (Stereo VCA). It’s a single channel, but offers a pass through output which can be very useful for recording or for effects sends.

Ha, yes, the Ampla... need to flash that for a try, but I have the Dual Dagger and Phkia as stereo filters. No real beasts, but they do their job just fine. The Phkia has a dual (left to right normaled) VCA on board. Both have 'stereo filter panning', but the Phkia is not able to CV that from one socket, you need to independently CV the left and right filter.

I’m surprised not to see the Bastl Ikarie make the list! I suppose it isn’t technically a true “multi-mode filter” in the traditional sense?
@CinematicLaboratory Жыл бұрын
No that's not the case. There are 1000's of modules out there and I don't know them all. SSF stereo dipole also did not make it to the list simply because I don't own one. So this is basically a tour in my personal collection, biased by my own personal opinion and experience. But the list of multi mode filters is relatively short, so it's much easier to get a taste of what's out there. I wish I had an Ikarie :)

Yes, it's strange that Blades just seemed to slip by without anyone noticing. I bought one completely by mistake (meaning, I wasn't aware it was impossible to find), which I bumped into as a b-stock at Thomann whilst looking for something to replace a Joranalogue filter 8. Happy I bought it without too much thought, it's certainly worth it if you find one.

The only stereo filter I currently have is the QPAS, although it's my favorite filter overall (so far). I saw in an earlier comment that After Later came out with a Blades clone, which looks like it's available now. I've decided since I've been a tech/board designer all my career and have built many SMT boards by hand to get the Pusherman board/panel set. Admittedly not for the faint-of-heart (lots of 0402 parts in there) but at least for me very doable, although sourcing the IC's might be a pain.

From what I've heard, the stereo dipole is more of a "dual filter" than a "stereo filter," as Blades is. Inasmuch as I would happily take any of those off your hands, the dipole is the filter I want most. I haven't owned many filters (aside from VCV Rack), but the fact that the dipole has four SVF with independent mode and flexible routing make it amazingly versatile, yet the parameterization really sets it apart. I want a Freak because I know it so well in software and I could use a "stereo filter", but the stereo dipole looks really fun. (Vult software is freaking amazing. Leonardo is a gem.)
