For the last example in the video, the compounds are NOT meso, since they lack chiral centers. A meso compound requires the presence of 2 or more chiral centers in it in addition to the plane of symmetry

For the last example aren't there no chiral centers because the carbon is connected to the same thing? Therefore it wouldn't be meso? It would just be an identical compound?

The Organic Chemistry Tutor so its indentical right....for meso it should hve chiral carbon with plane of symmetry .....isnt it???
@angieangie44196 жыл бұрын
Yeah your right :) what makes a meso compound is the fact that it has a chiral carbon with a plane of symmetry, and that all the chiral centers changed, (just like enantiomer, but with symmetry) if you break down the molecule for the last one, you'll see that its the same on both sides. A chiral center needs to have 4 different groups.
@ionpaul90326 жыл бұрын
Meso compounds need chiral centers but, have a plane of symmetry.

Thanks for the explanation in a very simple way with a lot of examples. This video is much helpful for me. By the way in the last example, you said that despite the interchange of chiral centers, due to the presence of a plane of symmetry, they are considered to be achiral. But I think that compounds themselves don't have any chiral centers since those carbons (which have bond with Iodine), have internal symmetrical arrangements (about the vertical axis). Based on what you have taught in this video, this is what makes sense to me. If anyone thinks that my understanding is wrong here, please correct me. Thank you.
@weirdstrafer9263 Жыл бұрын
This is true in my opinion also. There are no chiral c atoms, its achiral. so it cannot be meso.
