I've recently acquired a pair of Rogers LS3/5a's (15:ohm from 1986). I have them paired with a Primaluna valve amp, and it's the best sound I've ever heard. Lovely things.

@@1jhnpennington I have had LS3/5a for 30 years John. I have a AVI Anniversary amp Auralic Altair G1 and run them with a REL Strata 5 Subwoofer. The sub makes a big difference, the little Rogers sound a bit 'thin' without the sub, but with it sounds wonderful...

@@jp8710 i don´t like a sub-woofer conected to my amp. and i do love bass but good speakers have to be perfect in low frequencies so one can feel the punch but also the notes played on the bass guitar ,the sub-woofer i think it´s more to film view with great sound and bass is a part of it, but i have a stereo system since 1980 conected to my tv and video ,now more modern formats and i like the way the sound increases with explosions or cars racing one at night sometimes almost jumps from the couch this with a 70´s pioneer system ES-2000(74) with extra celestion ditton series from 1970 with matrix 4 or incredible surround as it comes in the brochure, that never went bad till today, i have to say that i feel like i either than my speakers in my most powerfull system the idea of having two good sub-woofers ,the windows and furniture with doors with wooden frame and older glass(where i keep my record and cd colection) ,they already vibrate a lot with a 70´s system who sounds better than a todays systems

Great review ! Especially when you pointed out electronic music on the Kef ls50 @21:11. I noticed exactly what you said, they are technical speakers made for mathematicaly computed music but when it come to human organic music they are not magical and engaging.

Since Ive rekindled my affair with audio gear this past summer after a good 10 year hiatus, the absolute MOST raved about speaker I keep coming across time and again is the KEF LS50! The klipsch RP-600M is a close runner in the USA.

Stepping Out Queen, what a lovely song. Still sounds great on my lowly Dali 505 series connected with the smaller suite sattelites for a total 12Ω on each channel. My old 4Ω killed more than one amp on their own.

Good review 👍, I think the tonal quality of the mids as you said the Rogers is more natural than the others , because this speaker cut out most of the bass waves interference .maybe you could compare some of the new B&W 606 607 that have great reviews. Midbass drivers always compromise or trade off , trying to go lower on the bass notes loosing composture in the mids, it would be interesting if you could do a 3 way speakers comparison. Even the most expensive 2 ways speakers as the B&W ATC ProAc or other brands have some trade off in the sonic signature, the quality depends on what you pay.

I have some LS35a, by Sterling, I bought them for the most beautiful middle whereby vocals sound as if the singer is next is with you. Generally the musicality is superb, probably because of the composure, precision, detail and depth...but it’s the middle and treble that stands out. P.S. the amplifier is Linn...and I believe they need a capable amplifier...your point about more bass rings true, I added a Velodyne sub...it’s a subtle change, but was worth the extra $1k spend

A lot depends on what room you are putting speakers in. I have 6 different systems in 6 different rooms. The one is the kitchen but my wife only wants small speakers in there. So the Elac's fit the bill the best and actually sounds very good for the price. Got them hooked up to a vintage Marantz receiver so my wife can listen to FM or CD's.

Absolutely fantastic review! I have long term floorstanding speaker project what is almost done. Completely DIY. It has 4" Vifa full range playing 300-10 000 Hz (small closed box in the main speaker) and Nokia/Harman 6.5" playing 40-300Hz in the main 36 liter bass reflex box. Now why I wanted this design was the midrange & treble from that small Vifa driver. All I can say is that I have had a lot of good standmount speakers in my room and they have been mostly ok. Good but not causing any goosebumps what it came to the midrange. That small Vifa driver is just perfect to my taste. It has very simple crossover to filter everything under 300 Hz away and that makes it sound even better. 6.5" bass driver is just there to produce bass what was very thin with the Vifa previously only in separate bigger bassreflex box. So my main point is that in my opinion small 2-way speakers trying to do everything can cause midrange clarity issues. That is the whole reason why I made my speaker like it is. I watched tons of your videos and I have a lot of same opinions.

I have those Elacs. They are pretty good at imagining for the money. Soundstage very good. Other than that these speakers are not revealing. Though i havent heard the others i can say the review is very acurate with the Elac. They tend to do nothing exceptionally well. Though i do think for some listeners they could fit the bill. For most though they are not revealing or exciting enough to listen to. I like them but they leave me wanting more. You have a great ear for detail.

Interesting comparison of the 3 speakers...I'm familiar with the Kef line and Elac lines of speakers but not much with Rogers...For the price line I like the Elac series and the debut 6.2 that I have as my "B" pair on my 2 channel system.. I bought them for $150.00 half price sale about 2 years ago... Elac is having some sales on some of their line including these debut 6.2 series here in the USA...

I couldn't be happier with my KEF LS50's Hegel H90, Great Bass, amazing detail and never any harshness. However with the wrong amplifier they do sound unpleasant so i understand why they get negative press. But the Hegel and KEF combination in magic!

That's the thing with higher end speakers . They only shine with better high current amplifiers like your Hegal . Especially when impedances dip below 4 ohms

Hey Kelvin, I was listening to a pair of Proton AL-200A speakers and noticed they sound fantastic with piano, guitar and other midrange stuff as well as doing well with mid bass and bass but they just didn't have any sparkle in the top end. When I say they sound good with piano I truly mean they sound like someone snuck a piano into the room with you good -- perhaps the most realistic sounding speakers I've ever heard with piano. Too bad they missed the mark in the high end sparkle.

If you have a bass unit that is a bit floppy sounding, it can be fixed by painting wood glue on it, we used to do it to most celestion speakers in the factory. The wood glue dries clear and stops the cone from warping when big bass is put through it.Try it on an old pair of speakers you will be pleasantly suprised.

Reviews that compare products in the same price range are helpful to people who have been in the game for a while and have a general idea as to what they are looking for with respect to the sound that they want and also know how much they want to spend. On the other hand, I think that this review is very helpful especially if one is just starting out and is wondering how much to spend and what you might get if you spend more. So for that reason this review is great... especially since you tell it like you see/hear it and don't pull any punches. I would also like to see reviews that compare costlier components to less expensive components which really do compete and even best the costlier ones. This would be VERY helpful because the belief that there is a direct relationship between money spent and sound qualty ("you get what you pay for" ) is all too prevalent. And from personal experience I know that it is simply not true. Keep up the good work.

I've got the Kef LS3/5A Raymond cook limited edition version (bought in 2004) They're just in the box now .I bought some bigger vintage Kef 's they sound richer "better "(to the ear )and are also much cheaper !! (just make sure you got the T27 tweeter) Cresta ,Chorale ,Cadenza,Calinda,104 Reference etc. I tested on a Lyngdorf Millennium MK IV. Just a Tip . @@stereoreviewx Absolutely true probably due to the Frequency range (a small REL will also help) By the way mine are older than 2004 they are from 1997 !? Because the Proceed PDT 3 was still around (I had also one ) and we tried the Kef 's on a Audio innovation ALTO MKI of a friend (that sounded amassing )So 1997 is correct . But there still to expensive ,for what they achieved . Buy a older JBL TI 18 or L 20T ( getting also more expensive these days ) if you want a small all-round loudspeaker (did you know both can handle almost 1K Watts .I had 2 stage Accompany's C900 Bridged on them .And then there is PUNCH !! Fastness ,Air ,detail and stage . ) I had combinations nobody ever thought about . Try "Vintage "German loudspeakers Magnat, MB quart Etc on "vintage " English amp's (the best) Could go on for hours .;-) Regards Kenneth John

You might like to look at the (Sony ss cs5 speaker bookshelf) a bit of a sleeper it's a better speaker than the elac I would say. They run at 6 ohms so you have to make sure a amplifier is capable of running at 4 ohms or below, a subwoofer or two would be ideal but for low mid-range and highs they are an excellent speaker with a great sound stage lively but not bright or fatiguing. If using a subwoofer have to consider the size of room if it's a 1 subwoofer go with a 12" in a medium-sized room +, if it's a small room and you want to go for two, go with 8 inch possibly 10 inch. and wall material is important if it's brick don't go with big drivers in a small to medium rooms. a good amplifier for the speakers on a budget that's really audiophile is the (iotavx SA3 integrated amplifier £400) usually goes on sale might be this time of year buy direct from company in the UK designed and built was going to be a nakamichi amplifier. and can buy the power amplifier and be bridged later on if wanted. I don't know what your circumstances our music tastes or source material you like to listen to? it has a good phono stage as well so hooking up a record player is good has an add-on for Bluetooth apx what is about £25 that plugs into the back if that something you like. Hopefully that helps if you want to discuss anything feel free P.s. when I say about subwoofers any speaker of this size will need a subwoofer or two not just the Sony

If you ever get the opportunity to pick up a pair of Infinity Il10 speakers give them a listen. I have them and their big brother IL50 tower but the IL10S have a very musical sound. I've had my Infinity system for 19 years

@@stereoreviewx I was too. I gave my nearly new Klipsch subwoofer to my son to complement his sound bar . It was a disaster to be honest. The plates would tremble in the kitchen for sure! I then tried the very small REL 5ti at my local dealer. It has literally transformed my system with tight base and seems to integrate perfectly. I’m not using the subwoofer out on my Yamaha R-N803D. The wiring goes straight too the R/L out connectors. It’s really easy to adjust bas levels. I can hardly hear where it starts off. Seems to be the perfect audiophile subwoofer :-) I like bookshelf speakers on stands.

I used to own a pair Elac debuts and they just sounded a bit bright for my taste. To an untrained ear this is heard as extra detail but isn't really. No more so than cranking up the treble. It was a pretty clean sound and the mids are neutral enough, maybe a bit lean but nothing special and bass is plenty but a bit loose and one notey. Best mids out of any speaker I ever owned is the B&W DM4 which you are familiar and also a pair pf ADS 810s from 1978 are just gorgeous on the human voice.

I think these are the causes/differences between a cheap and an expencive loudspeaker (cca) : - cabinet material, quality, shape if special, finish - drivers quantity, size and building quality (used materials, planning) - crossover network build and quality (which and from how many parts) - speaker terminals type, material and quality - front grille quality, pop-in or magnetic etc. - and at the end the "BRAND", what you must pay, and sometimes it costs more than the loudspeaker quality gives You.

Well they’re not the most sophisticated but a big sound want the one with the tweeter that’s blue not the Grey cloth coloured one which is basically a poor tweeter if you ask me. You should’ve paid more than 60 £80 for them I would say. If you feed them with something good I’ll be okay feed was something bad it really won’t work out I’d say

Well I haven’t heard of the r3 But I was very unimpressed with the LS 50s So I’m pretty down on those single point Drivers from KEf Though I was a huge fan of KEF in the 70s The Rogers are pretty much a close proximity monitor I would buy secondhand ones if you can You’ll get loads more base from the KEF but it’s not a bass I like and I don’t like the sound of those cones

You have to plug the ports to get "tuneful bass". Your ls35a are sealed boxes. Kef recommends to plug the ports in their speakers to get a flat frequency response, via a picture that shows a green checkmark in the box showing the flat response and a red X on the picture showing a bump in bass frequency. Kef gives port plugs with their speakers because they want you to use them in most cases. I know exactly what you mean by, "tuneful bass". You can't help but to toe tap when the bass is that tight and accurate. I pulled the port plugs out of my Kef R900s while playing music and everything sounded in slow motion. That is with JC1 mono blocks, which have bass control like an authoritarian dictator. The only speakers I don't plug the ports on are my LS50s when hooked to the JC1s in a large room. In a small room the LS50s sound great with the ports plugged, speakers isolated from anything (like a desk) that will resonate and a decent high current neutral amp and DAC. I have a Parasound 45 watt Zamp amp and matching pre amp and SMSL DAC with LS50s for my computer set up and it has very tuneful bass and balanced sound. LS50s can sound like as$. Place the inert cabinets on a resonating surface, use a low current and harsh amp, don't plug the ports and the LS50s will reveal exactly what you give them. Or, they can sound amazing if you place them on sand filled stands, plug the ports (unless you have a killer amp that can control the small driver where everything is happening) give them a quality neutral source and give them room to breath. They sound best a third of the way out in your room. I'm sure the ls35a sound great wherever you place them because they aren't putting out a lot of energy and the thin walled box with resonate the energy into the air. The inert boxes on the LS50s will not resonate into the air, thus the energy needs to go somewhere (desk, subfloor.... for the boomiest and muddiest bass). The LS 50s are the most finicky speaker I have come across and I learned the most from them, because they are so sensitive to change (things that you should do with speakers for best sound and things that you should avoid). I miss your videos Kelvin and I hope everything is well with you. Do you plan on making more videos?

Some cheap speakers may surprise us. I'm using an inexpensive US $149.00 Fluance SX6 with a Sansui AU-5500 and sounds good with a decent bass. Sounds better than the infinity intermezzo 2.6p, a US $2,000.00 from year 2000, of course the infinity intermezzo 2.6p has a better huge bass.

A question, does Rogers are now the so talked about focal? i have a pair of Rogers(two way ) speakers and in the back have the symbol of focal as the word ,they belonged to my father and i´m not yet finding where he kept the manuals but it seems a model from Rogers?are you aware of what it might be, ELAC is a well know brand for me as i have from my father a turntable and amplification system with speakers from this excelent brand the turntable today it´s hard to compare as even expensive cartridges don´t sound so good in detail and dynamics ,much less this new wave of turntables ,looking like it were made on someone´s back shed, it´s so wrong young people thinking that the horrible sound of around 1.000€ turntables is what people used to listen in the past ,well was much above any cd sound no matter what DAC you have, the problem is being a old format, digital in the 80´s was far from cd sound but someone is making millions for prepectuating or continue to use this 70´s developed format which was fun in the 80´s but today is kind of sad ,the Lp´s converted to digital and cd sound maybe 30% of the real sound, making some kids think that this was the sound of the bands we loved to hear but so far from the truth ,also related with the fact that in 1980 all brands decreased their quality to make them components afordable to more people, but paying thousands you would keep having old quality, available at low price before, in the late 80´s to early 90´s technics sold several models of turntables that the prices were around what today is 70€ ,seen some with stroboscope but belt driven, they work today with full quality, the main problem either than excessive expensive cartridges are the size of the stylus which ,the first i bought i thought the whole tip had fallen but seen with a binocular magnifying device one can see a tip of a stylus like if it was 2 meters high and the diference is huge against old strylus that also had at least 3x more hours of use

@@stereoreviewx its true but some do have interest , in the last maybe 20 years , having talks with kids that were around 18 that i knew because they played live in a cafe or alcohol and food ,tradicional to the region we live and also a music club and concert hall ,this starting in 2003 , after knowing that i had a home studio they would ask me to record them a demo and being themselves somehow creating a new kind of rock sound and having all known tradicional instruments who are expensive and some of them had not money but they worked to invest in instruments and amplifiers , i for sure would be unterested in recording them a demo having also interesting lyrics wich surprised me when i was not expecting to hear nothing new from this kids generation after knowing eachother i made 3 of them ,and i'm refering to a 4 menber band , they become adicted to cassette recording to which i told them what to buy and having a lot of cassete boxes i would offer to each ,two boxes of tdk Sa , others havi g less money ,they asked me if i could find them a component system that i offer myself to buy them not only on ebay but in national sites a 500€ system , after having the money i would buy them a good sounding but cheap system , with excelent sound compared to their parents 90's cheap compact systems , this without any profit to me and through the years tgey would ask me how to improve this or that component to have a higher quality in their systems , that hapoened to a lot of young kids through out the years, but in general a mp3 player or a computer with amplifier and speakers would satisfy most of them , some would be happy with a smartphone with computer amplified speakers or even just a set of headphones , after several years i would be amazed by how much cds or records they had bought ,most of it in 2nd hand . But , it's true in general no one has interest in hi-fi , but the same happens with music , everybody says that there is no quality music this days but that as well couldn't be more far from the truth , with only spotify i discovered a lot of new bands with great quality music in diferent styles ,so many good lps being released with great quality and i bought several cds having learned how good were this new bands , but mainstream is ridiculous at diferent styles even the now so called alternative being soft rock or heavy rock or acoustic music or folk bands, the same happened in the 80's having dozens of real alternative bands , so some kids are interested in hi-fi ,the main problem , Money . One of the main reasons i trash a lot of brands saying they are good when in reality they sound horrible, and having a listening room , most of tem are happy if by their 40's could find a litle place they call home , being most of the kids living with their parents in this age in their bedrooms, which is sad. there are always exceptions to the rule about the interest in hi-fi , some even had the luck of their parents having stored in boxes old components and also records or cds that myself am surprised when asked if a amplifier from Rotel or accuphase with jbl speakers have any quality and than the question "is it close to Sony quality?" and i don't even know what to reply in the moment or a question like"why does technics having good turntables didn't built nothing else?" to those i shoe them in my home ofice some components i have from the 70's and they look like they saw a pug flying ,so to speak. In general these are strange days.

I combined my Rogers with a b&w subwoofer. Works fine with classical music, tends to be aggressive with pop, and terrible with movies. I just can't get it set up right.

But finally after a long and tough process of large vetting, I'll buy the Quad S2 today for a refined sound with just the right amount of bass for a medium sized room and without agressivity in the highs, close to the Rogers in the medium musical reproduction but also with current standards of dynamic, neutrality and balance for home theaters usage. I had the chartwell ls3/5a, and the original ls50, and now the ls50 meta, i can say the ls3/5a is most likely the best on voicing and a magical midrange and midbass, but no low bass really is present, but most musical and engaging of the 3. The ls50 i love alot also for different reasons and they can dig deep for their size, the elacs i would not choose over either one at all, i wouldnt pick them up for say even 50 bucks. Currently have the new ls50 meta and im plenty happy with those, and some gr research xls encores fully upgraded and between those 2 id say their both keepers and endgame bookshelves, i have no interest in trying any new bookshelves for now due to both of those at the time, i hope that helps some people.

"It's correctness gives a calming effect" Yes, when you begin to move from low or mid fi into high end, the music seems to slow down and become simpler. It's not slower of course, it's just a psychological effect due to the lack of jumbled artifacts. Initially it may be perceived as unexciting, slow and boring. It takes a while for the brain to really tune into the fact that it is hearing the clarity and natural tonality of real acoustic music. It can take a few days but once the brain sorts it out, WOW! People think they hear with their ears, but that's just mechanical, you actually hear (decode sound) with your brain. That's the only part that gives sound meaning and emotion. The Elac actually has a reputation as one of the best budget speakers ever produced. I have not heard them as I fill that niche with 2nd hand ProAc EBT. But it seems to me you probably wouldn't go wrong with the Elacs for the price.

Professional & buyer views vary hugely between models for Elac speakers . Cheap Audio Man ( highly recommend if you enjoy the no nonsense presentation from this channel ) is a fan & has an excellent comparison between Debuts & Reference DBR52 . Others say Reference sound is quite reserved / laid back. So depends what presentation is preferred 👍

I heard an old pair of the Rogers at an audio fest a decade ago, EVERYONE was drawn to this little giant killer. We could not believe what was coming out of those small cabinets. I have the Elac B6.2. Good, balanced but can be a little too edgy up top, mid-range a little rough recessed. Benefit from good power. Kefs? Too bright, not enough bass for me.

You know, a lot of people companies etc try to overcome cabinet resonance with high levels of mass and density. However completely the opposite philosophy can be used i.e light and rigid, and well damped. High mass tends to store energy, while low dissipates it quickly. I think when you look back on older speakers they tend to be lighter, perhaps more in keeping with the latter train of thought. To me, this would allow music to have better pace rhythm and timing, giving the music greater agility and speed. I say this going from the very heavy but well damped KEF LS50, to the Mordaunt Short MS20i Pearl, and finding these cheap speakers much more lively and agile, it's like they have great dexterity, very nimble!

Kevin, I just watched another video on the LS3/5s and the topic of the white ring that forms around the dust cap of the B110 driver came up. I see your Roger's also have the white ring that may form due to aging. As I understand it, the result is a 1KHz peak in response that shouldn't be there. ... + crossover caps dry out at that age as it does in old electronics where it’s likely the LS50’s are showing up the tired electronics that have gone bright. A new pair of LS3/5a’s to spec are £2.5k and a new pair of LS50’s with new meta technology are £1,000. I like LS3/5a’s on certain voices and simple acoustic recordings but try using them in todays applications like modern recordings with a wide dynamic range or movies and they sadly show their age and quickly narrow down what you listen to.

​@@neilgaydon5430 Interseting, I've been spending lock-down trying to build my version of the LS3/5a and noted that KEF's CS1 has a circuit to tone down 1.1KHz which seems to imply that the B110 must be flawed. Before all this hub bub about the B110 driver, I had one fail and replaced it with a Focal. From my point of view the Focal sounds so much better after toning it down a bit.

@@chrisharper2658 From my limited understanding the LS3/5a is a complete system where the cabinet details are as crucial as the drive units and crossover ie the cabinets must be a certain birch plywood/thickness construction not MDF and needs to be tuned to be lossy to ensure the bass is kept away from the mids. The cabinets and crossovers were designed for pair matched Kef B110’s and T27’s. If anything is changed they’re no longer LS3/5a. That’s not to say you’re not making a better speaker ultimately.

I don't think the Rogers is the best out of the Bunch and you know you'll have to play it with the screen on not the screen off it's designed that way that's what the foam is for has to be a special covering I think it's called burlak cloth grills. The Goodmans ls3/5 version of the speaker is supposed to be good maybe worth looking out for. Wonder if you can help me out I'm looking for a set of speakers from the mid 70s too late two particular models the leak 2075 or the leak 3090 both of them use 15" sandwich drivers, now they seems to be different types of tweeters I'm not sure if that standard or they've been replaced I've seen them with ribbon tweeters and seen them with Wharfedale's because they were working with Wharfedale to design the speaker I will consider any condition but if complete between £500 to £800 if you come across any let me know in the comments thanks. or the 3000 series.
