Azalea X the British persecution of the Irish (and Highland Scots and Welsh) was largely based on the perception that the Gaelic peoples were a separate race from the Germanic. Religion became the primary focus after it was decided ethnic genocide was something of a no-no in the civilized world (same reason Natives in the western US weren't wholesale slaughtered or starved like their Eastern brethren).

i mean keep in mind in the USA no one is 100% anything anymore. And white folk in america all have very different culture depending on where our ancestors are from. So like u gotta have a little compassion. Its incredibly disenfranchising because we cant identify with a place because the people we share genetics with don't consider us apart of them. Nothing in americas was white peoples to begin with. We bought and fought wars for all of it. We also identify with with where our ancestors are from because its how we differentiate between one another. And for you to say american irish aren't "irish" is fair. But we are of irish heritage. There are 33.3 million people in the USA of Irish ancestry. Thats 33.3 million people who share genetic material with you. To say we don't have something in common just is incorrect. Are we nationally Irish? Hell no. And no american would ever claim to be. But culturally we identify as Irish because that where our families are from.

Despite your typically English ignorance to the contrary, the Irish are the most common ethnic group in the US, followed by the Germans, with those of English descent being a distant third, soon expected to drop to fifth place, behind those of Mexican and Nigerian descent. Yes, crumpet boy, I know that it's an article of faith in your country that the "colonies" are still English, just your own people transplanted across the Pond, but in real life, that hasn't been true for a very long time - over 150 years. So do go on making a fool of yourself if you feel the need, which you probably will because clueless narcissism seems to be an Anglo-Saxon tradition, but know that any even moderately well informed American is going to be rolling his eyes at you and wondering if you're a chav.

Irish people are way too friendly to react like this. I went there about 6 months ago and I also said I was retracing my ancestors and all I got was friendly attitudes. One of my ancestors (by name, not necessarily direct) was in the Flight of the Earls for christ's sake, so I think I'd get this very serious reaction if it was true, but exactly the opposite was the case. In fact, I had the very friendly Irish helping me out rather than cursing me and saying I thought I was Irish. Of course, I was very quick to say that I'm an Australian, and not thinking I'm Irish, just that my ancestors were. Another thing I noticed was that not one Irishman or woman used the phrase: "to be sure" - another false stereotype. All I can say is that Irish people are among the friendliest and most open people I've met and I had a great time, and look forward to going back.

@@spoof2803 "It boils my blood when an American calls themselves Irish" At the risk of boiling your blood, I am Irish American, which is Irish. The Crowleys, Hurleys and O'Sullivans came from county Cork, the Kehoes came from Inniscorthy in county Wexford and the Gallaghers came from Mullaghmore in County Mayo. We also have O'Connors, O'Donnels and O'Connels. My cousins are Mary, Meghan, Connor, Daniel, Michael and Bryan. We're Irish af 😆. When my sister, Erin, took her DNA test, it came back 100% Island of Ireland, with an emphasis on County Cork, where 3 seperate branches of our family came from. It even narrowed us down to a single town, Skibbereen, where Johanna O'Sullivan and Nicholas T. Crowley came to America from during the famine. More than that, we are Georgetown Irish. We are part of a tight nit community in Washington, DC thats kept our culture and heratige alive for 150 years. When our family moved across the river to Arlington, we ended up having to move back to Holy Trinity, our family parish in DC, because the Arlington Diocese wouldnt let us have a proper Irish funeral when nana died. Holy Trinity has been the heart of the Irish Catholic community in Georgetown for over 200 years. Thats why Kennedy went there when he lived here. So, yeah, we're Irish af. Sorry if stating that fact makes your blood boil. Maybe ask yourself why you get so angry and try to be more tolerent of people from different backgrounds? Theres certainly more than just one group of Irish people in the world.

Ive never said i was irish. I have irish ancesters. The fact that I have Irish ancestors is a fact of DNA(I also have Cherokee and German in the tank). Im an American that's a fact of nationally. I am an American with some Irish ancestry. My ancestors came from Ireland (Munster to be exact) on a ship...to America sometime in 1890. In America unless your 100% native American your DNA comes from somewhere else. A lot of Americans have this weird thing where we like to figure out ware that DNA comes from. When we find this stuff out we're like "oh that's so cool" do not why we just do. Why would me( an American) stating the fact "I have Irish ancestors" be offensive to an Irish person? Or why should I( an American) be proud of my Irish ancestry? For if my paternal great grandfather's parents didn't come over on that ship from Ireland(Munster to be exact) my paternal great grandfather wouldn't have married my half Cherokee great grandmother. Who's son wouldn't have married my full Cherokee grandmother, and they're son(my dad) wouldn't have married my German mom and I wouldn't have been born. I'm glad to be born and that's a fact. Another fact: Dublin was built but Vikings and when I was their they has an ass in a leprechaun character costume dancing in the street.

It's the fact that some Americans claim themselves Irish as if it's their nationality. When in fact their they only think that cause they have an irish last name and from Boston or in an area similar to that.

I find it very flattering when someone appreciates our small little island. You’re welcome to join in on Irish things and videos like this. I think the thing people find annoying is just when people say they’re Irish but know nothing about the country. I don’t find anything wrong with it but others get all worked up over it, but yes join in on the fun!

He never called himself Irish, he just said that he wondered why his ancestors ever left. Not really the same thing, and I know the feeling. I'm half Russian, and people like to come up to me and say that they're Russian, and I'm like "oh really?" usually the answer is something like "Yeah, my great great grandfather's cousin third removed dog's last owner's wife was in Russia once."

This is actually very racist. Us irish people are actually friendly but we only get annoyed at tourists if they say they are irish cos their ancestors were.THAT DOESN'T MAKE YOU IRISH.if u aren't born in the actual country ,you ain't irish. We don't dress like we're from the 1800s either we sport adidas ,Nike, pull & bear, Ellesse, o'neils etc..... and we're not all red headed boi , also we aren't always in the pub either cos we actually have lives to live so yeah bye

Well... I have a question... I was born in Dublin(Rotunda Hospital) but my father(he is French, my mother too) went to the south of France for work-related reasons and I growed up there. So, my question is: Can I call myself Irish? Culturally the answer is obvously "No" but administratively the answer is "Yes". But I want to know your point of view about my case =).
