We always hear whispers of how Penang people are terrible drivers, or that Ipoh girls are prettier than other states, and being in Malaysia, a multicultural country - stereotypes are more apparent. On this episode, we have Matthew, one-half of the Penang boys and Nathaniel, a newcomer to the podcast to talk about the many stereotypes that exist in Malaysia, from state-related stereotypes, to office stereotypes.

Intrigued by the angle you all spoke about local stereotypes and how a message can be framed in so many perspectives. I do agree that it’s important to understand that people come from all sorts of upbringing and history and the least we can do is try to educate ourselves before making quick judgements. I was wondering if people in Asia cared about what’s happening in the States regarding AAPI, it has made me reassess what I may’ve disregarded and taught to keep my head down. I think many of us Asians have become so sensitized to what we experience and thus we don’t question or speak up.

tbh I had stereotypes against mainland chinese as tourists with how they can be very loud and rude as with watching them when growing up back home. But as of now in aus meeting lots of mainland Chinese I would say some can be rude&loud but a lot of others are definitely the kindest and easy going people to talk to. and more of that, civilised people. (plus, Angmos can be much worse but again, that's another stereotype) (plus plus, rude & loudness should not be categorised within a culture or group of ppl, its within individuals)

Gossiping, social exclusion etc is a way to minimize or discredit others to get both material and social (attention, titles, respect blabla) resources lor

I heard a stereotype from my Xpat colleague a few years back. He said that someone told him that here in Malaysia; the Chinese are the money maker, the Malays are lazy and the Indian are gangsters.. lol.. well, i told him to open his eyes n see for himself.. whether that is true or not. I've met a Chinese Gangster, a successful Indian Businessman and hardworking Malays. Character & attitudes or attributes of a person not depending on their race.. they're human n consists of human flaws. Even tho i have some issues with our politics but I love our country.. I don't like to hear anything bad about us.. n us is included all. Skin colors are just a diversity of harmony that we have but it's harmony non the less. I hate politics using racism as an agenda and separating us by creating doubts n to make us go against each other.. why??

Not enough discussion on ipoh and penang girls. Dont quite agree section on mainland chinese. Coming from a british born malaysian and working with many mainland chinese - they are really not all loud and brash. That really is a bad stereotype
