I've been doing this job for 18 years. I'm a senior technician/team leader and totally love my job. Have to say though that this place is very quiet, our unit it totally manic as we cover 5 major hospitals and numerous cottage hospitals, still it makes the day go fast! We are totally overlooked by the medical profeesion and Donna is right without us we could render a hospital useless in 24 hours! Keep up the good work.

I’m 23.. growing up I was always a sick child, endured many many surgeries. Then When I turned 18 I was diagnosed with cancer and had several surgeries as part of my treatment plan... never did I consider the people who did the sterilization for the surgical equipment.. this video was an eye opener for sure and I have a newfound appreciation for all they do. This video was amazing to watch. Thank you

classicstorm they prefer people with certification but it’s all about how well you present yourself during the interview process. I worked in EVS for 2 years at a hospital before landing a sterile processing job at Globus Medical... that was in 2018, left the company in 2019 and am now working at Baylor Scott and White and have been exposed to sooooo much more information that I had zero idea about lol. It’s all about confidence! And I’m sure my knowledge with how to handle certain types of biohazard chemicals/waste/sharps played a part as well.

I think all hospitals throughout need to start paying more for these position not only is hard work but realistically even if your at $13 hr who can live off of that. Without SPT docs can't operate patients which tells me that the salary that SPT make is way below what it should be. Surgical Techs are also on the low end if you ask me $45,000 yr in some states. All the hard work yet easy for docs to come in and make a good $100 hr or more. I think these positions need to be reevaluated by Human resources and the CEO of each hospital because something has to give. You have medical assistants getting paid $16 hr. While SPT are getting paid $10-14. And the workload is alot lighter for MA checking patients in and out. REEVALUATION on salary is what needs to be done.

I'm going into the field in 2 months. I am certified and really looking forward to it as well as I'm nervous. I'm glad she made this video at 3 months because it helps me as a new person see the support. I'm nervous because it's been a bit over a year since I went to school, I'm glad I recognized everything discussed and I'm hoping to be a nice as Donna. I was a bit worried that my age and I'm a bit out of shape would be a struggle but I think I will be able to handle things as the focus will keep my mind off anything too physically strenuous. I was a McDonald's manager for 3 years and had to lift heavy loads coming in as well as break down a kitchen at night so I imagine this can't be worse than that 😅 I look forward to getting started to I can see if this is going to be a fit long term, it seems like a lucrative career 😀

+Freddy Placencia you can google travel CRCST to find companies in your area that do this. But basically you are hired by a company. They contract you out to hospitals to come work. The contract can be wks/months. In most areas you can do this "locally " within certain mileage of your "base" some are more nationally. But start with a Google search to find the companies in your area and then you can schedule a meet and greet or look at their website.

There is really no room for error in this position. Can't get cut with any of those sharps and making sure you don't get any bodily fluids on you. Someone suggested I go for this but I must admit I'm a little scared.

Jorge Perez honestly dont be scared . im taking an 11 month course to do this and im more excited then scared. It deffinitely helps having previous job experience in a workplace where you have to be 100 percent accurate and have to remember alot of steps, but go for it. its a job that once you get used to its basically routine

It's interesting rewatching this as a now experienced tech. I originally watched this video to get an idea of what SP techs did before I started. Its already been more than a year and it's really cool to come back and know everything shes doing, and compare their SPDs process/Setups.

@@WhatKenPlays hey sir in all honesty as you can see here some people from the comments claim to have gotten the job without any school etc. I on the other hand have infection control instructions classes .. I was a dental assistant do you think I can land a job just like them but with even more knowledge than they????
@Dante_S550_Turbo
@Dante_S550_Turbo 4 жыл бұрын
@@juankroosfrausto7411 depends on your state. I landed the job with no medical background. I was handy with automotive tools and that is a good perk for someone to have. I caught on to the instruments quicker than most. We had a dental assistant get hired here, and she worked well. I don't see why not it should be pretty easy for you to land, although a dental assistant job should be higher pay.

Great video. The technician is a mature woman with a wealth of prior work experience (technical anything or just a love of details) at her disposal which she brings to this new position. She is patient, interested in the work, and wants to do a through job. I did this job 30 years ago and yes Rudy Figueroa is not wrong ;)

I currently work for the USPS and applied for SPT. I had been interested in this field for a while now. I see more and more hospitals offering this job with little to know experience on the condition that you will get certified after 12 months. I really enjoyed this video because it was clear, precise and really cool. I really hope I get the opportunity and if even if I don't I think I will take the course. Seems like a really cool job that is also rewarding. The compensation should be a lot higher actually.

The SPD tech (Sterile Processing Tech.) class is not $30k. The most I ever saw the class is around $1,100, but as low as $425. You may be thinking of the Surgical Technologist program which would be around the $30K range. It is an actual two year program (depending on what school you would go to). The salary of SPD/Sterile Processing is lower than what a Surgical Tech would make, and the responsibility are a bit different. Not sure if this helps or clears things up.

9 years later in 2022: the program I am looking at is a 10-week one that prepares you to take the certification Board exam to become certified. This is with a local state community college and hospital network. The cost is $2,400 now plus $125 national testing fee. Scholarships may be available.

Im leery of the online schooling because theres so many out there. None of them offer practicum, or lab classes. It seems they are more geared to passing the certs rather than training you to be a Sterile Central Processor. It would be like taking online couses to be a ASE certified mechanic, but no garage classrooms to practice.
